The Academy is designed to address shortages in offstage and technical skills for live music and the performing arts. Detailed plans being prepared by Creative & Cultural Skills, the employer-led Sector Skills Council, will be submitted to government in April 2007.

UK - Star Events Group and SRC have announced that they are combining their mobile stage operations to form what is probably Europe's biggest rental fleet.

"We are always looking for ways to expand our operation so that we can continue to provide our clients with a first class service," says Star Events' group sales director Jane Russen. "There is an obvious synergy between our Star Mobile division and SRC, so when the opportunity to combine our two mobile fleets presented itself, it seemed a logical progression."

UK - Recolight chief executive Eddie Taylor has today announced receipt of its Compliance Scheme Operator approval from the Environment Agency. "We are very pleased that the Environment Agency has approved the Recolight compliance scheme," says Taylor, "we can now focus on the implementation phase of our proposals, starting with the formal registration of our members."

Recolight is a not-for-profit company set up by the lamps industry to operate a scheme designed to meet the specific and in some respects, unique requirements of Gas Discharge Lamps under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations. The Scheme already has over 20 producers who have made firm commitments by pre-registering and this is now expected to grow quickly following the formal approval of the Scheme. Sweden/USA - Wireless Solution Sweden AB and Illumivision, Inc. recently turned the Murray Lock and Dam Bridge in Little Rock, Arkansas into a spectacular tourist attraction. The newly constructed pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Murray Lock and Dam, dubbed the "Big Dam Bridge", recently held a special ceremony to show off its new look, bejewelled with coloured lights.

The bridge, which spans the Arkansas River, is 4,226 feet long, with a span over the river totalling 3,463 feet, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers. Billed as the world's longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge, construction was completed in August 2006. The addition of lights was completed a few months later.

UK - Dolly Parton, one of the most honoured female country performers of all time, has unveiled a plaque of her handprints, which will be on permanent display in Wembley, London's Square of Fame. The ceremony took place as Parton prepared to go on stage for a sold-out performance at Wembley Arena, part of the singer's 17-city, 10-country European tour.

The merger of the two businesses will effectively double the size of the existing Avesco group with combined net assets approaching £50 million and substantial financial resources to fund future development. UK Talbot Designs managing director Richard Woolff is facing the challenge of a lifetime as he limbers ups for a marathon cycle ride for charity. Woolff is leaving these shores and donning his cycle shorts for a 110 mile mountain bike ride round the Northern rim of the Grand Canyon in the USA. The trip which is being fully funded by Woolff will involve him cycling 25-30 miles per day over rough terrain at altitudes of up to 8000 feet. He is training daily in preparation for the ride.

The charities benefiting from his ride are SANDS for bereaved parents and families and HOPEHIV which seeks to help the 16 million orphans in Africa who have lost their parents to AIDS. He has raised almost £2000 so far.

UK - Research for the proposed National Skills Academy for the Creative and Cultural Industries suggests that current and projected growth in live entertainment will generate demand for an extra 10,000 skilled offstage and technical staff over the next decade. And with half of the current workforce expected to retire or leave the industry by 2017, the total estimated number of recruits required rises to around 30,000.

Major employers in the theatre, live music and events industries already report serious difficulties recruiting qualified and experienced professionals in a wide range of disciplines including lighting, sound, stage controls and specialist backstage support staff.

Established in 2001, it rewards students who show exemplary talent in lighting design. The Bursary is judged on a project that the student has produced within the past academic year and awarded by the ALD in conjunction with ETC and The Mousetrap Foundation. Jonathan 'JP' Parker, who has been serving as Aviom's sales director in the Southeastern US, is now assuming the role of director of international sales, Asia Pacific.

Mark Meding, who has been Aviom's sales director for the Northeast US and Canada, will now assume Parker's former Southeastern territory and will be in charge of sales throughout the entire East Coast of the US.

The Canadian territory is now back in the hands of Aviom's longtime international sales director, Joel Brazy, who also continues to oversee the company's European sales efforts.
