South Africa - Philips Vari-Lite's South African distributor, DWR Distribution has recently delivered 120 Vari-Lite fixtures to Gearhouse Splitbeam, the specialist theatre lighting division of the Gearhouse South Africa Group of Companies.

The deal was co-ordinated by Gearhouse Splitbeam's Alistair Kilbee and DWR's Duncan Riley and is the largest sale of Vari-Lites yet to date in South Africa, and also the first purchase of the premium brand by Gearhouse.

The units were delivered to Gearhouse Splitbeam's Johannesburg office. Some will be immediately deployed on the Closing Ceremony of the 2010 Soccer World Cup taking place at Soccer City stadium, Soweto, on 11 July (LD Hugh Turner), and a substantial quantity will go straight onto the upcoming Asian tour of High School Musical (LD Declan Randall) for which Splitbeam is supplying the full lighting production.

The event which took place at Chepstow Racecourse provided the charity with the opportunity to thank the Bikers, the public and the Armed Forces for their support, with all proceeds from the event donated to the Afghan Heroes Charity, in support of the armed forces. For this event Stage Electrics supplied a full technical solution which included staging, lighting and audio.

USA - One of Broadway's recent hits, American Idiot, received the honours of 'Best Scenic Design of a Musical' and 'Best Lighting Design of a Musical' at this year's Tony Awards Show. The award-winning scenic elements of the show centre around numerous video displays and projections, driven by a system comprising a total of 17 Hippotizer HD media servers.

With a musical score based on Green Day's album of the same name, American Idiot debuted on Broadway in April under the direction of Michael Mayer. Mayer led a creative team that included scenic design by Christine Jones, lighting design by Kevin Adams, and video and projection design by Darrel Maloney. USA - PRG Distribution North America has announced its distribution partnership for North America, Mexico, Central America and South America with electric chain hoist manufacturer ChainMaster.

Manufacturing motors for the entertainment industry since 1993, ChainMaster introduced the first variable speed VarioLift motor in 1998. Their product line spans from 1/4 to 12 ton motors, 2-32 channel control boxes, their XYZ computer control for large jobs, and trolleys. ChainMaster was recently awarded the rigging contract for the Qatar Convention Center in Doha and is supplying that venue with nearly 1,800 VarioLifts and seven 256-channel control systems.

UK - On 5th June 2010 a group of bikers, hailing from all sectors of the entertainment technology industry, swapped their blacks for leathers and their hard hats for helmets and embarked on an eight-day sponsored motorbike tour of UK theatres to raise money for The Theatrical Guild (TTG).

David Edelstein, who co-organised of the event with his wife Brenda, comments: "We set out from the National Theatre following a hearty breakfast. In total we rode over 1600 miles and on the way visited 16 fascinating and unique theatres. We've been welcomed by some wonderfully hospitable and generous theatre staff and are hugely grateful for all the brilliant support we received. Money Matters - British music fans spent £1.45bn on tickets for gigs and festivals in 2009 Concert and festival promoters have warned that ticket prices could go up as songwriters consider requesting a greater share of live music takings. Currently, 3% of all gig ticket money goes to PRS For Music, which passes it on to writers and composers. It is reviewing that rate, saying it needs to ensure a "fair balance" between music fans and creators.

Melvin Benn, who runs the Reading, Leeds and Latitude festivals, described it as "blatant money-grabbing". UK - Stage Management student David Baldwin tightened the symbolic last bolt on the roof structure of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama's new Concert Hall at the Topping Out ceremony to mark the completion of the concrete shell of the £22.5 million building project.

Baldwin joined fellow students and leading figures from the College, the board of Governors, architects BFLS, project managers Davis Langdon and construction team Willmott Dixon to celebrate this symbolic moment in the building project. Work will begin shortly on the roof structure, the final construction phase of what will be an important new gateway to Cardiff.

The Sector Skills Council for creative and cultural industries has named Gateshead College as the only college in the North East and one of only a few in the country to lead on new training opportunities.

This will mean that the college, in partnership with international music venue, The Sage Gateshead, will now work as the founder college of the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural Skills (NSA) to ensure it continues to provide the best possible learning opportunities by bringing together education and industry.

UK - Black Light reports that it has achieved the Investors in People Standard (IIP). The company, which provides light, stage, sound and AV solutions, was assessed in May and passed all the scheme's critical requirements along with its main optional extras.

Investors in People is a national standard which helps organisations transform their business performance. UK - Topshop has been promoting the charity Teenage Cancer Trust to help raise awareness of the charity and also donations. To do this, they recently hosted a series of picnics in parks across the UK entitled Topshop Bandstand Picnics for Teenage Cancer Trust. Family Ltd who executed the events on behalf of Topshop, contacted Stage Electrics and asked them to support this very worthwhile charity by supplying sound equipment, staging and technical support.

The events which took place over a two-week period in June, saw some of the UK music scene's hottest and developing talent take centre stage at Regents Park- London, Stanley Park-Liverpool, Castle Park- Bristol and the Vale, Birmingham.

UAE - Dubai based Gulf Crewing Company (GCC) celebrates 18 months in business with a success story which has seen the company expand rapidly and the staff increase by 300 per cent.

Gulf Crewing Company was launched in November 2008 by Jo Marshall, Nigel Beaton and Shane Manning - all of whom have considerable experience working in various aspects of the live events industry.

The concept is to provide a European style crewing operation to supply skilled, qualified efficient crew and technicians for all types of events.

Beaton had been working in the Middle East as a freelancer and realised that there was a real need for a professionally run and organised crew service on these lines. He and Marshall - a show technical director/production manager and now heading Al Laith Events Services, formed GCC along with Manning, an experienced rigger, to fill that vacuum.

UK / South Africa - SES Entertainment Services in Datchet received an order from Gearhouse SA for a large order for power distro for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa.

Gearhouse SA ordered a total of 14 SES 19" 400A rack distros which were used during the rounds and also at the opening concert and the closing ceremony.

Andrew Sackstien from Gearhouse commented, " The racks we received from SES were exactly what we required and they had understood my requirements precisely. Germany - The first 'Business Brunch', arranged by Gerriets, took place in the Semperoper in Dresden, starting a new scheduled series of presentations about basics, projects and products from the Gerriets World. Further such events are scheduled to take place in regular intervals in different cities and with different topics.

The main presentation concerned the requirements for dance floors and their different fields of application. The lectures were closed by a 'journey' with Gerriets through 60 years of theatre history presenting the fascinating history of art curtains.

Gerriets reports the brunch was a great success and was met with an excellent response from the 120 participants.The programme concluded with a guided tour through the Semperoper.

UK - With Friday Night With Jonathon Ross's tenure at the BBC drawing to a close, the microphones used by his resident band 4 Poofs & A Piano are being put up for auction in aid of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital.

Supplied by Terry Tew Sound & Light to the show's broadcast sound supervisor Andy Tapley, the four Shure SM63 mics in pink have been in use since 2001.

"Andy and I discussed what would be the best mic for the 4 Poofs," says Terry Tew, "and I advised him that the SM63s would be the right product to cope with their microphone technique. The fact that they've used the same ones for the last nine years is testament to the fact that we got it right."

John Robinson, aged 18 from Felling in Gateshead, joins the Graphics department as the company's first real apprentice. He will work closely with Zak Hussain, graphics manager in the areas of set design, 3D animation and managing web-site content.

Ben Middleton was welcomed back to R&B Group Yorkshire recently, having previously worked with the company on freelance and short-term contracts. Middleton was selected to join the team in order to support the continued growth of R&B Group in the Yorkshire region. His role will involve the preparation, load and installation of equipment, along with the operation of equipment during live events for clients such as RICS, The Royal College of Nursing and York Racecourse.

UK - Culminating in a an innovative awards event, the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards' winners, including the best designed restaurant and the best designed bar, were announced and presented with their awards at Victoria House, London on 22 June.

In a bid to increase networking at its awards event the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards commissioned Cinimod Studio to create an effective and visually stimulating solution. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology was used to identify key visitors on the two 'networking pods' during the evening's proceedings.

The tags embedded in shortlisted designers and sponsors' name badges used radio signals to send their identity to antenna receivers. Projections then highlighted guests' key professional characteristics (projects designed, sponsor brands) as they moved around the pods.
