These awards were created to acknowledge the genius of both the creator of technology and the designer or integrator who applies the technology in a real world environment.

Contestants for the 2009 awards showcased a wide variety of new products and product applications from the simplest problem solver to complex uses of technology that extended the boundaries of the entertainment technology field. Project nominations showcased everything from the lighting of the Grand Mosque to the staging of the Democratic National Convention and highlighted the collaborative nature of our industry.

Global Music Sales - Sales of music slid by 7% around the world in 2009, new figures have revealed. But the music market in 13 countries, including the UK, grew during the past year, according to data released by recording industry body the IFPI. It added that global digital sales registered a strong increase across many markets in 2009. Susan Boyle's debut album was confirmed as the world's biggest seller of the year, shifting 8.3m copies. The Scottish star's performance was substantially up on 2008's world number one, Coldplay's Viva La Vida, which sold 6.8m. The Black Eyed Peas and Michael Jackson's This Is It followed Boyle in the rundown.

UK - PLASA and L&SI magazine have joined forces with the technical team at The Centaur in Cheltenham to stage a three-day loudspeaker demonstration on Tuesday 18th, Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th May. The event, which PLASA and L&SI plan to be the first of many such product-led industry gatherings, will allow visitors to hear and compare a range of the world's leading professional PA systems designed for shows and events with up to 5000 audience capacity.

Over the course of three days, 12 leading manufacturers will gather at the 4000-capacity multi-purpose venue to demo' their systems. The Participants will include DAS Audio, EAW, Funktion-One, JBL, K-Array, KV2 Audio, Martin Audio, Meyer Sound, RCF, Renkus-Heinz and Tannoy.

UK - PLASA Events confirms that PLASA Focus: Leeds 2010 has broken all records over the two days at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Visitor attendance topped 1800 - an increase of nearly 30% on last year's launch event. Thirty-three first-time exhibitors at PLASA Focus meant the show was brimming with key industry players, bringing the total to over 130 exhibitors, with both halls sold out weeks in advance of the show.

USA - With the growing success from each of the previous Control Protocols Plugfests, the event has now become a regular part of the ESTA Technical Standards Programme meeting schedule and will return for another run in July. The ESTA Control Protocols Plugfest will be held at the Dallas/Ft. Worth Marriott Solana hotel in Westlake, Texas. The Plugfest will run three days: Friday, 23 July 2010 from 16:00 to 22:00; Saturday 24 July from 09:00 to 22:00; and Sunday 25 July from 09:00 to 14:00.

UK - Billed as the first ever panel discussion to address the issue of working at height and sustainability, the Access Industry Forum (AIF) representing the nine principal trade associations and federations involved in working at height, has brought together a panel of experts in the inaugural AIF Knowledge Base at this year's Safety & Health Expo in Birmingham next week. These include representatives from UKCG (UK Contractors Group) and the Construction Products Association. They will discuss the topic: Work at height - sustaining the future.

The panel of experts will examine and discuss the initiatives currently in place, review what other areas of industry are already doing and identify specific areas for future attention and development. The debate therefore promises to be both stimulating and informative.

South Africa - For the third year running, Gearhouse South Africa supplied full technical production, site infrastructure and a series of solutions to stage the 2010 Mighty Man Conference, at Greytown outside Durban.

Gearhouse was again working for The Shalom Trust, and in close collaboration with its technical co-ordinator, Nik Fairclough of Northwind Recording who also mixed the FOH sound.

Gearhouse's project manager was Eyal Yehezkely. He oversaw a crew of 28, spanning multiple technical disciplines - audio, AV and screens, power, lighting and staging. The project management included internal and on site logistics, surveying and GPS mapping of the site, detailed layouts, design of the crowd seating, positioning of delay towers and structures and producing comprehensive site plans.

Nominations in the design categories went a broad line-up of productions, with plenty of recognition for leading productions Fela! The ensemble of five young women from Mt. Vernon Senior High School in Mt. Vernon, IN performs almost exclusively a cappella, and features music ranging from medieval chant and polyphony to contemporary Irish choral music and the American Sacred Harp tradition. Angelus is dedicated to the performance of the sacred music of varied religious traditions and historical periods, and counts among its influences Irish choral ensemble Anuna and the American quartet Anonymous 4.

USA - Due to special arrangements with the testing company, the deadline for submitting applications to sit for the paper and pencil examinations to be given at InfoComm in Las Vegas has been extended. All applications must now be submitted to the ETCP office no later than 21 May 2010.

All three exams are available at over 190 testing centers in the US and Canada on most business days. New Orleans Benefit - Lenny Kravitz is to headline a benefit concert in New Orleans to support relief efforts for those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Kravitz, who lives part-time in the Louisiana city, was among the first to sign up for Sunday's concert. Singleton had worked for HSL whilst freelancing, which proved a fruitful experience for both parties ostensibly leading to this permanent appointment.
