UK - The BBC has equipped its two newest outside broadcast vehicles with Focal CMS50 active monitors. The two vehicles form part of a BBC Radio OB fleet that became fully operational this spring and will ultimately replace the oldest vehicles in the existing fleet.

The CMS50 is a two-way, bi-amped, nearfield monitor featuring a 5" mid-woofer and it is the middle size in the CMS (Compact Monitoring System) range, which also comprises the CMS65 and the new CMS40.

Garry Robson, of UK Focal distributor, SCV Electronics, said, "We presented the Focal CMS range for approval during late 2009 and were delighted when we heard that the CMS50 had been chosen over the usual suspects. One of our dealers, HHB, received the BBC order in early 2010."

Norway - Production Resource Group (PRG) was awarded a seven-figure contract to be a primary technical supplier, providing lighting, video, LED and rigging equipment and services for this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo.

Following five weeks of pre-programming at PRG's facility in London, 31 trailers (approx. 270 tons) of technical equipment and a team of more than 65 technical specialists from across the PRG group have travelled to Oslo. The three shows are televised to an estimated worldwide audience of 120 million, building to the live final on 29 May.

PRG (formerly PROCON Event Engineering) has provided technical services for the Eurovision TV show in Athens (2006), Belgrade (2008) and Moscow (2009).

Eurovision Update - The teenager who represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest has said he is "still smiling" despite coming last in the competition. Josh Dubovie, 19, from Basildon in Essex, scored just 10 points with a song penned by Pete Waterman. Dubovie said it had been "a privilege to represent the UK" and one of the best experiences of his life.

Acts from 25 countries took part in the event. It was won by Germany, whose entrant Lena scored 246 points. Turkey's MaNga came in second place, with Romania third and Denmark fourth. This is the third time the UK has finished in the bottom spot in the past eight years, following on from Jemini in 2003 and Andy Abraham in 2008.

UK / North America - PLASA, the lead body for those working in the live events, entertainment and communication industries worldwide and ESTA, the principal trade association for the entertainment services and technology industries in North America, have voted to merge their two organisations.

The announcement comes on the back of lengthy consultations with both sets of memberships which concluded recently in a formal vote of Members - PLASA via its annual AGM, which took place on Wednesday 2 June in London, and ESTA via a month-long electronic ballot which ran throughout May.

Well over 90% of Members from each Association voted in support of the move, which will see ESTA and PLASA integrated to create a single international trade association operating under the PLASA name.

Wight is Green - Sir Paul McCartney has lent his support to reducing the carbon footprint of this year's Isle of Wight Festival, where he is the headline act. The ninth festival to take place on the island since its return from its 1970 heyday gets under way on Thursday. Organisers want to make the event as "green" as possible after winning the Greener Festival Award last year.

Hosted by White Light in London, the seminar gives delegates a good understanding of how the Code of Practice should be used with the IET Wiring Requirements to provide safe electrical environments at events. As well as confirming existing knowledge, it also proved to be very thought provoking and has made us look in greater detail at the way we design and install event distribution systems and the management of those systems whilst on site."

USA - The 2010 Tony Awards were announced in New York City last night, with the Donmar Warehouse's production of Red leading the pack with six awards - more than any other single play or musical production. Red won best new play, best director (Michael Grandage - artistic director of the Donmar) and best featured actor in a play (Eddie Redmayne). Other members of Red's British creative team also came out on top, with Christopher Oram winning for best scenic design, Neil Austin for best lighting design of a play and Adam Cork for best sound design of a play. The appointment, which sees Stage Electrics become one of SGM's first Preferred Resellers and System Integrators, will be formalised at this month's ABTT Show in London.
