South Africa - South Africa-based In Living Colour, established in the mid '90s by Gavin Buckle, recently invested in an Avolites Tiger Touch II and 12 x Robe Robin 300 LED Wash fixtures.

"Due to In Living Colour's position within the market where an equal amount of events and sub-rentals to other related companies are responsible for our sustained growth, we concentrate on investing in leading brands that are consistently sought after by international touring companies as well as local suppliers," commented Gavin Buckle. "Our lighting desks and fixtures are required to keep pace with the rigorous demands we place on them, whether being used in the controlled environment of a theatre or the unpredictable exposure of outdoor festivals. The glaringly obvious solution was the Avolites and Robe brands. Since making the wise investment they have thankfully seen little

Australia - This year's Splendour in the Grass festival in Byron Bay, close to the famous Gold Coast, hosted a significant quantity of SGM's outdoor lighting fixtures. With damp experiences from the past haunting festival organisers and production managers, the requirement for lighting that could withstand torrential winter rainfall was the highest of priorities And Mother Nature did not disappoint!

The four day event saw SGM lighting fixtures such as the P-5 RGBW wash and the Q-7 RGBW flood take part in several installs and stage packages across the festival. A most notable display being that of Melbourne artist Sam Songailo. His 20sq.m maze comprising 100 large pillars was a big attraction of the festival, gathering thousands of attendees at any given time. Entertainment Technology Australia's Taylor Chadwick was recruited as lighting designer for the install, in charge of bri

USA - Multi-Grammy Award winner Keith Urban has carved out a niche in the country music genre since he arrived on the scene in the 1990s by combing raw musical power with sweet uplifting lyrics. Urban was his usual open, carefree and engaging self when he appeared on The Today Show Summer Concert Series recently, showing an uncanny ability to connect with his audience and even surprising an ecstatic young fan from Chicago by giving her his guitar.

Urban's generosity and upbeat music weren't the only things engaging fans during his performance. Also captivating the audience at Rockefeller Centre and watching at home on television was a sparkling, bright and colourful lightshow created by designer Peter Greenbaum that featured a collection of Chauvet Professional Nexus 4x4 LED panels and Next NXT-1 moving LED fixtures supplied by WorldStage of New York.

Singapore - The island state marked its 50th anniversary - SG50 - with pride, as flamboyant celebrations erupted all across the island, culminating in a special National Day Parade (NDP) in the Padang, right in the heart of the city. The NDP show was attended by the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Tony Tan, several international heads of state, politicians, dignitaries, a host of VIPs plus 60,000 members of the public. It was also broadcast live on national TV, beamed across Asia and streamed locally to giant LED screens in several key locations around Singapore.

Spectacular lighting for the energetic multi-media SG50 NDP show directed by Dick Lee was designed by Javier Tan, and the equipment - including the 350 x Robe BMFL Blades - delivered by Showtec Communications Pte Ltd., which recently purchased over 700 BMFL fixtures.

The BMFL Blades were positioned on all

The HSBC Headquarters Building in Hong Kong's Central district - Norman Foster's remarkable machine-like structure, had been the subject of a facade lighting project in 2003 which became 'A Symphony of Lights'. HSBC HQ was one of 24 of the most significant buildings that joined Hong Kong's permanent nightly light show that year.

Twelve years later, illumination Physics was commissioned to help bring to life the first wave of HSBC'S 150th anniversary messages. A complete update of the façade lighting and the integration of three large media walls followed.

In 2003, the HSBC main building was equipped with the best lighting technology available at the time. The LED revolution had yet to take hold. The first step of illumination physics' plan for this building upgrade was to bring the façade lighting up to date. The photometric requirements for this building are very precise. Few plan

South Africa - Philips' entertainment lighting brands Vari-Lite and Strand Lighting, along with the Showline product range, enjoyed three jam-packed and successful days at a buzzing Mediatech Africa show in Johannesburg.

We saw a lot of people coming up to discuss its wide range of features and wanting to see a demo."

USA - Necessity may indeed be the "mother of invention," as the old saying goes, but it can also kick off some very cool lighting looks when it encounters a talented LD like Chris Lisle. Recently, Lisle designed for up-and-coming country star Billy Currington on tour supporting Tim McGraw.

As an opening act, Currington's rig had to be moved on an off the stage quickly, which made it necessary to use backline carts for the sake of efficiency. Lisle turned these "practical" carts into a commanding visual element by using an array of fixtures provided by Bandit Lites. Anchoring this eye-searing collection were nine Nexus 4x4 LED panels from Chauvet Professional.

"We based the design off utilizing the existing backline carts that Billy was already using, and incorporating lighting on them," said Lisle, who placed the carts upstage over the band's head

Germany - Complete with full costumes and make-up, KISS recently brought their elaborate live show to Europe this summer, kicking off its 40th Anniversary European Tour 30 May in Munich's Olympic Park.

LD Sean 'Motley' Hackett (INXS, Savage Garden) has been designing the lighting for KISS shows since 2009. Sean's new lighting design for KISS's 2015 European summer tour, which was based on the band's Las Vegas residency from last November, included the use of 30 Elation Professional Platinum Beam 5R moving heads supplied by Christie Lights. Production design was by Robert Long and Sooner Routhier.

Sean had the popular colour-changing beam lights grouped in fans of five or six in the rig and on stage and used them to complement the band's catalogue of hits with barrages of narrow, dense beam effects. "To me they are the modern equivalent of an ACL," Sean states of the

UK - When Richard Statham, the in house lighting designer at Nottingham Lakeside Arts, got the opportunity to use ETC's new ColorSource Spot on the latest production The Wiz he couldn't say no. ETC's associate regional manager for UK & Ireland Jeremy Roberts was at the venue to show Richard the fixture, and left several there so that he could try them out on the show.

Richard was deeply enthused with the colour mixing and smooth dimming curve: "No-one would believe this is a budget LED light source - this is a real game changer. I already have my spending application in."

The ColorSource Spot and PAR fixtures were introduced by ETC especially to benefit arts and community centres like the one in Nottingham, who want to get the best out of their lighting but have only a relatively limited budget to spend - which of course needs to be shared across the whole tec

UK - The UK seaside resort of Blackpool has been hosting one of Europe's premier Elvis contests, which this year featured an appropriately glitzy lightshow featuring high-impact LED fixtures from Chauvet Professional.

The fourth annual Europe's Tribute to Elvis, which took place in Blackpool's iconic 19th century Empress Ballroom, gave aspiring Kings of Rock and Roll the chance to qualify for a trip to the Elvis Tribute Artist Contest finals in Memphis. Arranpaul Audio, which has handled lighting and audio for the event in the past, was tasked with creating the design for the 2015 edition of the contest. LD and engineer Ollie Wilkinson called on a collection of Chauvet fixtures to create something of a fresh Elvis experience for the audience during the three-day event.

"As the event is becoming one of the most popular Elvis competitions in the world, we knew that w

A record-tying 300,000 filled Grant Park to see the hottest EDM acts, legends and the music industry's hottest chart toppers. "When collaborating with Bandit on these large scale projects they have two secret weapons: Dizzy Gosnell and Shawn Lear," said Jackson.

"These projects have millions of tiny details, lots of paperwork, lots of follow-up, and a lot engineering requirements. Dizzy's ability to organize everything coming from the shop, with everything changing constantly, and with all I send his way is quite remarkable. This, of course, then falls in the same time window as Shawn sorting the equipment and building the

UK - The Knight of Illumination Awards (KOI) Theatre judging panel has announced its eagerly anticipated shortlist for this year's ceremony, which will take place at London's glamorous Troxy club on Sunday 4 October.

Organised by the ALD, STLD, The Fifth Estate Ltd and Clay Paky and now in its eighth year, the KOI Awards is a celebration of the creative talents of international lighting and digital content designers working in the UK across TV, theatre and concert touring and events.

The theatre shortlist is the first to be revealed, after a panel of senior critics from national newspapers deliberated over the finest lighting and video work from the categories of Dance, Musicals, Opera and Plays. The shortlist is as follows:

Dance - Lucy Carter for Woolf Works, Royal Ballet, Howard Harrison for Edward Scissorhands, Theatre Royal, Plymouth, Sadler's Wells

Spain - The third edition of La Voz Espana, the Spanish version of the popular TV singing contest was won by an ecstatic Antonio José, coached by singer songwriter Antonio Orozco. The series generated a massive amount of excitement and record viewing figures - and was lit for the first time by TV LD Iñaki Irastorza who used Robe's BMFL Spots and Pointes in his design.

The series was recorded and broadcast - on the Telecino TB channel - from the Mediaset Picasso Studios in Villaviciosa de Odón in Madrid and produced by Boomerang TV, who invited Iñaki, one of Spain's leading TV lighting specialists to add his own distinctive creative flair.

Iñaki was one of the visitors who saw the BMFL Spot for the first time at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and was impressed with the light output, so he specified it for this show.

UK - Bristol's Love Saves The Day festival moved to the new, expanded location of Eastville Park this year dramatically increasing its capacity from the previous city centre site, a move that allowed 27,000 music and fans to enjoy a superlative line-up and weekend of music and entertainment graced with the blazing sunshine beneath blue skies.

Locally based lighting and visual specialist Fineline was once again at the forefront of providing some of the high production values for which this event is renowned - delivering lighting, video and rigging for the three main stages.

Fineline MD Rob Sangwell commented, "We were excited to be involved again after supplying lighting and video to the main stage last year. It's great to see the festival move forward and it was a huge pleasure collaborating with production manager Tom Paine and everyone from organisers Team Love."

UK - With LED lighting now becoming more and more common, LEE Filters has introduced Zircon - a new range of lighting filters that is designed to offer quality, consistency and, above all, durability.

It's no secret that conventional lighting filter struggles with fade times when used in conjunction with LED lighting set-ups. Zircon filters are able to circumvent this problem, thanks to a new technology that gives them an increased lifespan of up to 200 times longer than standard lighting filters.

It's not only their fade-resistant characteristics that distinguish Zircon filters from their more conventional counterparts. They are also easy to handle and fix in place, thanks to being produced on a 180-micron substrate that is more than double the thickness of standard filters.

With a selection of warming and diffusion filters in the range, Zircon filters provide a reliable an

USA - The popular Beachbody health and fitness brand held its most important coach event of the year 16-19 July in Nashville and Elation gear was there in force on what is, perhaps surprisingly, production company Visions Lighting's biggest job of the year.

"For us it's bigger than EDC, Coachella or any of the other festivals we do throughout the year," states Todd Roberts, president of Southern California-based Visions Lighting, who has been involved with Team Beachbody Coach Summit since its inception. "It started in a small ballroom and has grown every year. Last year there were 8,000 attendees and this year there were 20,000 so it's growing exponentially."

Beachbody markets some of the U.S.'s most popular health and fitness solutions including DVDs and health and fitness products with a well-known presence across print and digital media. Team Beachbody

UK - Produced by Gods and Monsters Theatre, London's Free Open Air Theatre Season presents a free, action-packed programme that aims to introduce new audiences - irrespective of age, education, financial circumstances, physical ability or ethnicity - to theatre.

Running since 2003, the season has simply grown each year and is once again taking place in Central London's The Scoop from 5-30 August. Finland - On 10 September 2015, during the Helsinki Design Week, the Silo 468 light art structure will house a gathering of minds from the world of architecture, design and lighting. Thinkers at world class level will join Lighting Design Collective (LDC) in challenging and debating the current role of light, natural, artificial, digital, responsive and participatory in the architecture and in built environment.

The social, cultural and design role of lighting is facing major crossroads and departure points at this moment in history, from applicative history to digital futures. For example, the importance of natural and artificial light to the quality of life and the health of individuals are gaining recognition worldwide, reverting priorities that seemed to be consolidated for more than a century. At this stage, the evolution towards the next generation of artificial light and

South Africa - The main stage for the 2015 Innibos arts festival - one of the largest Afrikaans events in South Africa drawing over 107,000 people over five days - staged at Hoërskool Bergvlam in Nelspruit, was lit for the eighth year by Pretoria, based LD Johan Ferriera. This year he chose to work with nearly 150 Robe moving lights, supplied to the event by Johannesburg based MGG, one of the country's leading technical production specialists.

Johan was also responsible for the set and visuals design, which allowed him to deliver a coherent and harmonious 'bigger picture' designed for a diversity of artists appearing over the four days - typically with 15 - 20 acts onstage per day - plus a large gospel show on the Sunday.

He worked alongside the festival's creative team, with the starting point for the stage lighting design being the biggest night of the festival - Saturday.<

USA - Christmas is almost certainly not the first thing that comes to mind for the large number of people who are enjoying summer evenings on the elegantly appointed deck of Howard Beach's Vetro Restaurant and Lounge. Yet it was an unexpected Yuletide meeting that resulted in the rich, warm and continuously changing lighting display that washes this rooftop area and is as much a part of its captivating charm as its warm ocean breezes and stunning seaside vistas.

Created with a collection of LED fixtures from Iluminarc, Vetro's lighting design can be traced back to December 2014, when John (Gonzo) Gonzalez, lighting director of MSNBC's Morning Joe Show, attended the Christmas celebration at Brooklyn's Saint Joseph's Co-Cathedral. It was there he met Steven Retas, who was lighting the church's façade with holiday-themed colours and gobos. The two men struck up a friendship and Go

UK - The latest lighting company to be knocking on the door of Ambersphere Solutions to purchase a number of Ayrton MagicBlade-Rs is TSL Lighting.

TSL director Martin Locket explains, "Although our market is quite diverse, we see the MagicBlades as initially being particularly attractive to our concert touring and a lot of the younger lighting designers. That said, as soon as we took delivery of the fixtures, they went out on three back-to-back rentals: Firstly, a European tour by a band called Crystal Fighters, specified by LD Michael Straun. This was followed directly by a corporate event in London for Microsoft for their Windows-10 launch, with LD Liam Griffiths. Then they were shipped directly to the third consecutive project, a Christian Festival called Newday. So we are pretty confident they will attract interest across our whole client base."
