For Logic System Pro Audio, the launch of a second generation CM Series of loudspeakers at PLASA completes a product development cycle for company, whose first generation products were launched at PLASA 1998. The new CM boxes benefit from cosmetic changes - to bring them in line with the rest of the product range - and from upgraded cone and compression drivers. The product mix for the range, which is principally intended for stage monitoring, will remain the same with co-axial 12" + 1", 15" + 1" and 15" + 2" variants. This new range will give Logic an 'in' to the touring market, and the company has said it will launch a follow-up product next summer - which may change a few perceptions.

MA Lighting introduced the latest member of the grandMA family of lighting control products to the industry yesterday at PLASA 2003, emphasizing the complete network systems capability of its now extensive product range.

Among the new additions is the grandMA micro, the smallest control interface in the range. The Micro uses a new hardware platform for maximum reliability and offers control of 1,024 individual parameters for both conventional dimmers and moving lights. MA Lighting also showed the new range of high quality dimming systems - naturally named 'dimMA' - and showed advancements to its 3D Visualizer software.

Building on the success of the recently-launched iDR and PA product lines, Allen & Heath has used PLASA as the launchpad for new products from both lines, as well as additional options to enhance the coveted Xone:V6 audiophile club mixer.

Based on the same technology as the iDR-8, iDR-4 is a 4-input, 4-output digital processor with additional 2-input, 2-output dual-function monitor channels, ideal for smaller installations, which also makes full use of the iDR accessories for expansion.

Following the launch of the PA20 and PA28 live stereo consoles, the series now includes the new PA12 mixer. Stage automation specialist Stage Technologies has shown its new Saxis system for the first time here at PLASA. This is a complete single-axis automation control system and the latest addition to the company's range of control systems.

Compact in size, it can be plugged directly into a three-phase mains power supply and incorporates all the advantages of servo-motor control, being small, with precise and near-silent operation. With on-screen diagnostics, absolute position feedback, position readout, programmable speed and accelerations and speed override during cue run, the hand-held interface gives the operator complete control. Six preset positions and a Dead Man's handle also ensure that a production's automation requirements are executed seamlessly, accurately and safely.

Panphonics' Audio Element, making its first appearance at the PLASA Show, is an innovative type of electrostatic panel transducer technology. Based on technology patented by the Finnish company, the elements are thin, flat and very light, as they include no metal structures or magnets. According to the company, the sound field produced by the element is even and the frequency response is excellent with low distortion. The elements also produce an evenly propagating sound front, so the speakers are directive.

Prolyte will be previewing ProTrac, an upgraded fly-bar system, designed for situations where a simple bar or ladder beam no longer meets requirements. For instance, if the uniformly distributed load needs to be upgraded from 300kg to 500kg and the point load from 40kg to 150/200kg, the normal fly-bar does not have the required strength. Therefore, the single round tube is often replaced with ladder beams, usually made from steel. ProTrac offers a better alternative than the steel ladder beams, thanks to its combination of an aluminium extruded square profile, underneath which a round tube of 60mm or 48.3mm is attached. Suspension points slide into the square profile and can be locked at any position, and flexibility comes from the fact that several lengths can be easily connected.

James Thomas Engineering's PixelDrive is a pioneering new way to control solid-state lighting fixtures in a familiar way - through DMX control. IRAD, the team behind the RADlite digital media server, has worked closely with James Thomas Engineering's Pixel R&D team to develop PixelDrive, a new way of controlling and expanding JTE's Pixel range of high brightness LED fixtures.

The RADlite video manipulation package (which utilizes DMX control and is already established as a visual live production tool) is the engine behind PixelDrive, giving DMX control of visual images via a familiar set of attributes - similar to programming a moving light.

The Spice 1210 is the latest rack-mounting dimmer from Zero 88. Designed for ease of use, the units have taken the intuitive user interface from the Chilli installation range and combined it with a range of features, including 12 channels, 12 memories and three chases. The unit also has dimmer curves (normal, linear, switch or square); channel voltage compensation calculated for each phase; dimmer lock-out function; voltage and frequency displays; supply frequency (45 to 70Hz auto-sensing and auto-tracking). These are Ethernet audio bridges which offer an easy, affordable way to install and distribute up to 64 channels of audio using the company's EtherSound technology. The set-up of an EtherSound network is as simple as plugging an Ethernet cable into a socket. EtherSound ES8in transforms up to eight analogue audio signals into as many EtherSound channels and distributes them via a standard Ethernet network, while EtherSound ES8out extracts up to eight digital audio channels from the network and transforms them into analogue audio signals for playback.

Straightforward management software allows the user to route signals, creating a level of flexibility that analogue audio installations often can't match. A single Cat 5 Ethernet cable can replace dozens of traditional audio cables and numerous patch panels and routing matrices.

Main features include dual DMX input for dual lighting console control, and low-noise chokes and fans, making it ideal for stage or studio use. The stand-alone aspect of the product is worthy of a closer look, a standard 19" 3U rack-mounting device, as is the clear text reporting for easy set-up and the 100% duty cycle on all dimmer channels simultaneously. The module is available in 13A, 16A and 32A per-channel current ratings, and options include RCD protection and direct fader level control.

Color Kinetics Inc (CKI), the US-based manufacturer of LED lighting effects, is showing no less than three new LED-based products here at PLASA. First up is ColorBlaze: Available in 6ft and 4ft lengths - ColorBlaze 72 and ColorBlaze 48 respectively - the systems are controllable in 6" increments and feature on-board power in an extruded aluminium housing. Powered by CKI's patented Chromacore technology, ColorBlaze features a high output, soft-edge beam of light from 12 or 8 circuit board assemblies with 18 high-intensity LEDs per board.

French manufacturer Ayrton is showing the EyeColor at PLASA. This is LED moving-head fixture utilizes 18 high-power LEDs to offer users an infinite palette of rich, saturated colours. Maintenance of the fixture is minimal, as it has no lamps or colour-mixing systems and its very low IR emission and non-existent UV radiation enable it to be used close to the objects it illuminates without any risk of damage.

The PLASA Awards for Product Excellence were presented yesterday evening after the close of day three of the PLASA Show. With a record number of new technological innovations nominated this year, the judging panel had a tough challenge on their hands.

This year there were five awards categories and 79 nominations, generating £12,000 for PLASA'S nominated charities - Light Relief, PSA Welfare and Benevolent Fund and the Golden Lions Children's Trust. This system has been running for five years now and every penny of the entry fees is donated. To date this scheme has raised almost £45,000 for charitable causes.

PLASA is the chosen setting for the debut of several new products from the Deco Leisure Group, including the RT Series from its award-winning loudspeaker brand, Dare Professional Audio. The RT Series incorporates the features of the widely-praised Dare Eclipse system, extending the technology into other areas of pro audio.

The three-way portable version of the RT has a neodymium 15" woofer with a horn-loaded Aerogel 6.5" mid-range driver on a Tractrix horn assembly with a 1" compression driver handling the HF. Dare will also show the RT Wafer: featuring the same components as its portable counterpart, this is just 200mm deep, and can be installed, literally, into the fabric of a building. UK manufacturer Soundcraft has continued its multi-mode console roll-out with the MH3. The new design follows the company's highly successful MH4 console, bringing the benefits of dual-mode operation to a lower price level, achieved through an appropriate feature set and mechanical and electronic designs which reduce manufacturing costs. This console offers an impressive line up of features for its price range, and is sure to find favour with national and regional touring companies, as well as theatres and corporate production companies, who can use one type of console in several roles - for instance, a single MH3 can be used to fulfil both FOH and monitor duties.

We have seen the UK debut of EAW's KF730 SLAM (Small Line Array Module) and the European introduction of its new DSA (Digital Steerable Array) Series. The SLAM features a six-driver, horn-loaded KF Series design in a compact enclosure. The full-sized mid/high horn fills the entire face of the enclosure, giving broadband 110° horizontal pattern control. The innovative phase aligned LF design extends horizontal pattern control into the LF, while a bi-amplified powering configuration (passive mid/high) reduces total system cost and complexity. A versatile rigging system allows box-to-box angles of 12, 6, 3, and 1.5°. Turbosound has added two new models in its TXD Series of passive loudspeakers, launched earlier this year. Aimed at the club, DJ and live performance markets, the TXD Series has already proved to be one of the company's fastest-selling product lines. Launched here at PLASA is the compact TXD-081, a passive 8" two-way loudspeaker and the TXD-252 - a 2 x 15" + 2" trapezoidal combo. Turbosound is also launching a new range of compact sub-bass cabinets, kicked off by the TSB-110. A dual-coil 10" bandpass design, it enables up to six satellite speakers to be connected via the internal passive crossover in a stereo configuration. The TSB-110 is powerful enough to generate up to 125dB max SPL (peak) of sub-bass energy, from an enclosure volume of less than two cubic feet.

ADB's much-talked about Warp fixture from ADB is on show (it was seen at the Show last year under its development name Axis), a cool-beam zoom profile spotlight, available in 15-30° and 25-50° versions. What sets this fixture apart from its contemporaries is its patented control system, which features a series of ring controls around the luminaire's exterior, making control of the luminaire's shutters, focus and zoom settings fully accessible, no matter what the angle of rigging.

The design of Warp also allows for the standard trunion arm to be easily replaced with a motorized yoke to provide remote pan and tilt control. Movement is available between 270° tilt, and a larger than average 400° pan. The yoke links easily into the Warp ring controls, providing automation of all other functions - focus and zoom, shutter insertion and rotation and gobo rotation.

A spot and wash-type effect respectively, Power Spot 250 and Power Wash 250 are ideal for nightclubs, churches, corporate events or performance venues. USA - Apogee Sound International has added five new models to its Apogee Fixed Installation (AFI) Series of processor-optional loudspeakers for the contractor market. Like the original five models, the new models - the AFI-1, AFI-2, AFI-110, AFI-115 and AFI-205 - are cost-effective, high-performance loudspeakers.

"The AFI-205 is designed for applications that do not allow for placement of separate subwoofers," explained Apogee director of engineering Barry Grzebik. UK - Columbus McKinnon displayed more new products at this year's PLASA exhibition than ever before. Recent optional upgrades to the ever-popular Lodestar electric chain hoist were being displayed for the first time. These include a double brake, which is available as either factory-fitted on new units or as a retrofit kit for existing owners. A direct control Lodestar, which has proven extremely popular since its launch earlier this year will also be available for inspection.

A CM manufactured variable speed Lodestar hoist, dubbed the Varistar will also be making its worldwide debut. This will be shown alongside a sample of the company's new BGV-C1 specification Lodestar hoist.
