UK - DarkSide Industries has achieved a first for the entertainment industry, completing the supply and installation of a three-part, curved horizontal lifeline system in the Quays Theatre, part of The Lowry Centre at Salford Quays, Manchester.

DarkSide sales director Simon Ellison worked closely with the venue to complete the project. "This permanent curved system is a real innovation in theatres, and makes lighting set-up a much safer operation," said Ellison. "Previously, the industry option was a temporary life-line. These are great for straight lines, but can't work around the curves of a balcony. So you've had technicians risking their safety by clipping on and off truss or, worse still, balcony handrails - which are completely untested for strength or their ability to cope in a fall situation."

DarkSide's solution is three twin line permanent systems

UK Tarmled reports "an overwhelming response" at PLASA 07 to its 4x4 video tiles which are equipped with 3-in-1, 3-Watt, SMD-LEDs designed for indoor and outdoor use, and deliver quality video images, even in direct sunlight.

Their transparent (82 %), lightweight, modular, aluminum, grid structures can be assembled into various configurations, such as cylindrical shells or wavy surfaces.

Individual tiles are interconnected via daisy-chaining involving just a single cable that transmits both the necessary drive power and electronic control signals.

Tarmled 4x4 video tiles and their interconnections are fully IP65-compliant, thanks to their passive cooling system. They are self-contained units, incorporate all of the electronics need for their operation, measure just 418 mm x 418 mm, have a pixel pitch of 100 mm, and weigh just 13 kg (28.8 lb.) per sq.m. Belgium - Introduced at the PLASA Show in London in September, Goboland's innovative black steel gobos have received a positive response from the lighting industry. Each gobo is coated with a black, heat-resistant coating, which does not burn or peel off under extreme heat. The coating minimises internal reflection, producing a crisper image with no halo effect. Encouraged by initial tests and feedback, Goboland has a patent pending on the use of this material for gobo production.

"Lantern optics have improved considerably over the years," explains Goboland's exclusive consultant, Wyatt Enever, "but the basic nature of the gobo has remained the same - until now. Goboland is known for the work it does on glass gobos, now we are extending our development to our steel range as well."

Goboland gave some 'M' size black steel gobos to ETC to try out in the ETC So

UK - With Line Arrays now a common tool amongst most touring rental companies, a further investment usually has to be in infrastructure for the system in the form of cabling, and more often than not a ground support system.

Litestructures approached speaker manufacturers directly about their various systems available. The result is that Litestructures has re-invented Its LiteMast with their ProBase system which works in place of the standard fixed angled corner joint. The ProBase incorporates universal mountings for chain hoists allowing one person to locate and fix the hoist in position rather than two which most other systems require. Another key point to the ProBase is the all round hinged corners, these allow the unit to be folded down for shipping with out the need to fully disassemble the mast, aiding load in and load out time.

USA - American DJ has developed the LED Bar, billed as a better way for bands, schools, churches and stage shows to create colourful wall washes. A compact bar with four heads, each containing 61 vibrant 5mm LEDs (21 red, 19 green, 21 blue), the DMX-compatible LED Bar can produce thousands of rich, saturated colors through RGB colour mixing, sas the company.

Featuring a 30° beam angle, the LED Bar's total 244 LED lamps will cover a wide surface area with dazzling colour. Yet, performers, entertainers and speakers will remain cool under its bright lights, thanks to the low heat emission of LEDs, which do not product ultraviolet or infrared rays.

Each of the LED Bar's lamps is rated for 50,000 hours of use, making mid-show bulb replacements a thing of the past. And the low power consumption of LEDs will help save energy costs and allow more units to be run on a single circui

USA - Neutrik, designer and manufacturer of the XX series XLR cable connector, continues to offer innovations in state-of-the-art audio connectivity with the introduction of its IP65 rated OpticalCon at AES 2007. The well-established solid fibre optic connector system has now been upgraded for dust tight and water jet protection.
