UK - John Hornby Skewes & Co. Has announced two new Lewitt MTP Live Series flagship models: the MTP940 condenser microphone and the dynamic MTP840. Both models offer wide-ranging features and impressive performance specifications that set new standards in this segment.

The MTP940 boasts comprehensive features and settings typically found only in today's finer reference studio condenser microphones. Three switchable polar patterns - wide cardioid, cardioid and super cardioid - allow for maximum flexibility when dealing with a diverse range of sources and environments; from lead vocals, public speaking, choirs, to classic unplugged situations with a singer and an acoustic instrument. A three-position high-pass filter makes it possible to directly influence the proximity effect, adapting it in the best-possible way to the sound source. USA - QSC confirms that several key components of its Q-Sys networked audio management platform, and all of the models in the CX amplifier line, have achieved IEC60945 certification. This is the final stage in the process of rendering them eligible for use at sea under the internationally recognised maritime safety conventions known collectively as SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea).

The QSC Core 1000, 3000 and 4000 processors, together with their associated Page Stations, I/O Frame audio interfaces and CX amplifiers achieved IEC60945 certification (SOLAS) by conforming to an extremely stringent set of internationally recognised standards. It is illegal to use equipment on the high seas that has not achieved SOLAS certification, and indeed a vessel's maritime insurance may be invalidated unless all equipment used on board is SOLAS-approved. Approval is not granted unless the internat

UK - Pro Audio Stash (PAS) has launched the first in a new range of power distribution units.

The British manufactured Octopus is an entry level racking product featuring eight IEC distribution outlets, surge protection and EMI (electromagnetic interference) filters and is built to PAS's rigorous standards of quality engineering.

Suitable for all pro AV and audio applications and especially for domestic and commercial installations where reliable power supplies are vital for protecting all types of electronic equipment, the Octopus brings the consistency of British manufacturing to the market at a very competitive price.

The design and manufacturing was completed by PAS's specialist rack division, Rackz, and the metalwork is supplied by Penn Elcom, both elements reinforcing the octopus quality assurance.

Australia - Royal Randwick's $152m five-star grandstand opened in time for the Sydney Spring Carnival season. Stretching 110m alongside the track and towering five levels above the finishing post, the handover of the grandstand from builders Brookfield Multiplex to the Australian Turf Club was a momentous occasion.

The Netherlands - The 2013 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) enjoyed all the usual spectacle of one of the music industry's highest profile events. But amongst this, the sound department was enjoying a quiet revolution of its own thanks to Sennheiser equipment - notably the new Digital 9000 Series microphone system, which was making its MTV debut.

Taking place at Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome on 10th November, the EMAs included performances by Eminem, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Icona Pop, Katy Perry and Kings of Leon, all of whom used Sennheiser 2000 series in-ear monitors and a combination of Sennheiser 5200 or 2000 series wireless microphone systems, except Kings of Leon who opted for MD 431 wired mics.

Two of the biggest challenges for sound designer Derrick Zieba were the amount of RF channels needed and that the presentation podium was at the far end of the Ziggo Dome from the perf

UK - Soundcraft Vi series digital consoles may now be prevalent around the world - but few single venues can boast as many as five (plus a vintage Soundcraft analogue console) regularly operating in a single space. But the multi-room Manchester Academy, run by the University of Manchester Students Union on the city's Oxford Road, can boast just such a feat.

Having historically hired front line sound for its main 2500-capacity Academy 1 from Liverpool-based Adlib Audio, this summer the Union began to upgrade its technical capabilities considerably to ensure that all four rooms were rider friendly.

The catalyst has been technical manager Stuart Wright, who was brought in 13 months ago to mastermind the refit. "The venue was very set in its ways and everything needed upgrading when I arrived," he said.

Although the main room remains on long-term rental - with a Soundc

UK - Although starting out more than 20 years ago in the Welsh village of Cwmaman, it wasn't until 1996 that Stereophonics secured management, a record deal (with V2) and embarked on a world tour in support of their first album Word Gets Around.

Enter front of house sound engineer Dave Roden, sound rental company, Capital Sound Hire and Martin Audio. That three-way relationship with the band has remained intact from day one. Seventeen years on, Kelly Jones and Co. have just completed another successful arena tour to give some exposure to the recent album, Graffiti On The Train, as well as old back catalogue favourites like Dakota.

Roden retains a fierce loyalty towards Capital Sound and has never been let down by their recommendations. "I started with the old [Martin Audio] F2," he remembers fondly, "and then moved on to Wavefront technology, the W

UK - Salcombe Estuary is an idyllic harbour enclave of South Devon and now home to the recently redesigned, renovated and expanded Salcombe Harbour Hotel.

Bedford-based Kazbar Systems were contracted to install the sound system for The Jetty Restaurant & Bar, corridors, reception and outside terraces in this spa hotel, which is built into the side of a cliff.

The hotel management wanted a sound system which delivered a full range sound throughout these areas, where the music would be clear at low levels, when delivered through their customer-profiled MP3 player, but equally have the ability to pump out high volume levels from the DJ mixer when required for functions and events later into the evening.

To fulfil this, Kazbar opted for a mix of seven Martin Audio AQ6 and six AQ8's - for the lounges and bar respectively - along with six AQ112 subwoofers (two in each of the paces
