USA - As it heads into its third decade, Calvary Chapel Melbourne (CCM) in Florida has grown from a handful of believers assembled in a hotel conference room to a mega-church that serves over 10,000 members with three campuses spread across east-central Florida.

In addition to its main campus in West Melbourne, CCM operates a 1,100-seat location in Sebastian River High School's auditorium and a 1,099-seat, purpose-built sanctuary in Viera, Florida. Beginning with the commons area at its main campus, CCM has been turning to natural-sounding, well-controlled Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and subwoofers and, in many cases, powerful Danley amplifiers and DSP to convey the full high-energy dynamics of its services.

"I've been impressed with Danley's philosophy and products for some time now," said CCM associate audio engineer David Hoover. "I got into pro audio via

USA - Less than a year after purchasing its Meyer Sound MIna and Mica line array loudspeaker systems, Snob Productions of Grand Junction, Colo. reports a steep climb in business activity, profitability, and customer satisfaction. It has become a dominant sound company in western Colorado and eastern Utah, and a favoured provider for events in the nearby resort town of Telluride.

"I can honestly say that, from the first time we brought Mina to Telluride, our business exploded," states David Wall, CEO of Snob Productions. "After 18 years in business we were well-known in the area, but this quantum leap in sound quality and setup efficiency has paid off 10 times over. The sound quality alone has landed us job after job."

Wall recalls the first time he used a Mina system for a Telluride event. "The quality just blew everybody away," he says. "We

USA - Outline North America, the US subsidiary of Outline S.r.l has added two highly respected live sound service providers to its growing partner network in the western United States - Southern California's Garibay Brothers Sound and Northern California's Spider Ranch Productions.

The agreements enable both companies to offer clients' access to the Outline GTO C-12 and the full-sized GTO loudspeaker systems.

Garibay Brothers Sound (GBS), based in Cerritos, CA, services a broad range of clientele with a focus on popular Norteno and Tejano musical artists. Recently, GBS specified and sold a C-12 rig to the prominent touring Mexican band, Calibre 50. The company also regularly provides a similar system to Intocable, another leading Tejano act.

"I've mixed hundreds of shows on virtually every brand of concert audio system over the past 18 years," says Rigo Garibay, GB

Turkey - Manchester based lighting and rigging specialist dbn was presented with another brain-teasing rigging challenge by production company WRG for a large corporate event staged in the Crystal Ballroom at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel & Conference Centre in Istanbul.

The design for the conference - hosted by a leading pharmaceutical brand - involved a fully immersive curved scenic set running around three sides of the room, featuring projection screens and a myriad of 3mm LED video panels.

With no flying in the ballroom, a ground support structure was the obvious answer but the creative producers were adamant that no truss legs were allowed within the environment ensuring everyone would receive the full visual experience.

This meant that a 26m span needed to be bridged by a structure with the ability to support over three tonnes of equipment.

UK - Tascam has released the VL-S5 active studio monitor speaker. As the successor to Tascam's popular range of studio monitors, this latest monitor is designed for home studios and works seamlessly with audio interfaces such as Tascam's own US-2×2 and US-4×4. Designed to monitor sounds from computer, multi-track recorder or portable music player, this versatile monitor offers high-resolution monitoring for any environment, says the company.

Each driver is driven by its own discrete amplifier, with 30 W available for the tweeter and 40 W for the bass unit. To remove unwanted phase distortion in the critical 1-2 kHz range, where vocals and guitars are most prevalent, the crossover has been s

UK - It's a mark of the reverence with which the British honour their heroes that whatever the dramas and disappointments of the preceding day, the general election could not diminish the three days of events that marked the VE Day 70th anniversary. Staged 8-10 May, it proved a resounding success.

With acts of remembrance on the Friday at The Cenotaph, and thanksgiving on the Sunday at Westminster Abbey, the pivot event on the Saturday staged on Horse Guards Parade was for celebration. VE Day 70: A Party to Remember was just that, featuring a host of stars on stage in a contemporary evocation of all that was musical, entertaining, dramatic and fun in the 1940s.

In partnership with The Royal British Legion this was a cooperative presentation between Live Nation and the BBC led by event organiser Graham Pullen. The show was production managed by Chromatic Productions, Ste

USA - Steve Moles reports for LSi: Excepting the Rolling Stones and, Lord preserve us, Ted Nugent, it's hard to imagine that anything in rock and roll has lasted thirty five years. Yet here we are in Nashville rocking up outside the doors of Spectrum Sound and yup, they just turned thirty five years of age. Barely middle-aged by most other measures, Spectrum is in the world of Pro Audio, a grand old man. Company founder Ken Porter is the kind of guy you can imagine becoming President of the student body at high school; he is also a consummate salesman. In that sense he is not typical of the characters who have grown the audio industry in the US. Yes, he has established a reputation for Spectrum built on delivery of high quality audio, but when it comes to business there is nothing typical about Porter, or his company.

Canada - At 372 seats, Capilano University's BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts is intimate and cozy, well-proportioned for this mid-sized liberal-arts university in North Vancouver. Now, thanks to its recent upgrade to a new L-Acoustics sound system installed by AV systems integrator Solotech Vancouver, the busy campus arts venue feels even more intimate.

The BlueShore at Cap, as it's known, hosts a wide range of events, from theatrical productions to concert performances by the school's music department and touring artists, including Buffy Saint-Marie, Randy Brecker and Harry Manx. Prior to the system retrofit, the venue's popularity with the community and visiting artists was pushing its basic PA system past its limits, and the school's own ambitions for the space demanded a sound system that could cover all of the artistic territories the theatre, jazz and mu

Steve Johnson, Community's CEO said, "We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Max, who was one of the audio industry's most respected members. He was a true professional and had a smile for everyone, with the warmth of personality that made him a good friend to those he worked with."

Max Lindsay-Johnson started his audio career by training as a sound engineer at the School of Sound Recording in Manchester, England. He moved to the sales side with A1 Music Centre, developing his career with Sound Technology, Arbiter and Harman. His pr

The LR28 larger-format line-array is the result of five years development, with the last two years dedicated to beta testing for the 'proof of concept'. Together with continued extensive R&D, which has led to another two patents pending in addition to the existing four, user-input from the world's top engineers has produced the LR28's fin

Australia - Everybody who's used Shure, BSS and Clear-Com products on live events know they can rely on them when getting the show right is 'a matter of life or death'. But what about when-- stripped of all hyperbole--things really are a matter of life or death? That's the reality that doctors and nurses face every day in emergency rooms, hospital wards and operating theatres.

The Simulation Learning Centre at The Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School of The University of Sydney is a facility that provides students with access to vital technology. Barbara MacKenzie, IS operations and infrastructure manager at Sydney Adventist Hospital, describes the Sim Lab as "a small 'Big Brother' studio. It's set up with two simulation environments; one as a critical care ward, and one as an operating theatre. In the middle is a control room with one-way glass facing into both rooms.

Rock School - Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical, School of Rock, set to open in the autumn, will be showcased this week as part of a series of concerts in New York. The concerts will take place at the Gramercy Theatre from 3-6 June. Lloyd Webber has previously said he chose New York to open his latest musical because of the more relaxed child licensing rules in America. In a targeted email, Lloyd Webber described the School of Rock concerts as being "highly-staged". He said the concerts would work better than an out-of-town tryout or extended preview period because "the wonders of technology get in the way of genuinely trying out new work". This month's concerts coincide with the Tony Awards weekend in New York, when producers, investors and theatre operators converge on Manhattan.

UK - Adlib Lighting has recently invested over £1m with Martin Professional, increasing its MAC inventory to over 200+ units including the award winning MAC Viper family, MAC Quantum Wash, and MAC Aura.

Mike Docksey, general manager of lighting and video at Adlib, commented, "Adlib has seen significant growth over the past few years and as such there has been a real need to further invest in new equipment to supplement our rental stocks. It was extremely important for us to invest wisely in the resources behind the talented people we have here at Adlib so that they can continue to flourish.

"As such, with an already extensive inventory of Martin products in our ranks, it was an easy decision to demonstrate our faith in the brand once more by way of a series of purchases across the range in a relatively short time frame."

UK - This year, the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) celebrated 15 years of their show stopping live performance week at London's Royal Albert Hall with another high profile line up. Artists included The Stereophonics, The Who, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and many more, plus a night of comic hilarity hosted by Kevin Bridges.

West London based rental specialist Entec Sound & Light has been involved as the audio supplier for the event right from the start, and over the years has fine-tuned the sound system to perfection for this prestigious venue.

This year they upped the ante again on the sonic front, as the first company in the UK to utilize a Beta version of d&b Audiotechnik's new Array Processing software which was officially launched at the Prolight+Sound expo in Frankfurt.

Entec's systems designer and technology support expert Liam Halpin explained how usin

UK - The Sound Design team at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre specified 28 KV2 Audio active EX loudspeakers to enhance a production of Little Shop of Horrors.

With the production featuring a live band it was felt that the existing in house system would not provide the required level and coverage required for such a show.

A total of 20 EX 6's were flown around the venue to ensure even and accurate coverage for all the audience along with four EX 26's and two EX 10's to further amplify the performance. Bass reinforcement was handled via a single EX 2.2 and single EX 2.5mkII.

Directed by Derek Bond and with live puppetry and design undertaken by Toby Olié (War Horse) it was vital that the audio reproduction was of an equal quality.

Deputy head of sound Sorcha Williams comments: "Little Shop of Horrors is a tremendously fun production, not least b

UK - When the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre in Lincolnshire took the decision to invest in a permanently installed active line array system for its 399-seat auditorium, it opted for an RCF HDL10-A from locally based LUX Technical.

The Theatre, which was built within the shell of the original Corn Exchange Hall in the Victorian era, needed a versatile system to handle its varied programme ranging from stand-up comedy to local am-dram and full blown rock concerts. LUX Technical bid successfully for the contract which was issued by theatre manager Judith Mackie. Having experience LUX Technical's larger HDL20-A rental system on many occasions, her team had been fully aware of the system's coverage capabilities.

"We decided to install a permanent system because when touring companies arrive with their own production they often carry enormous speakers. We wanted to make it eas

Namibia - DWR Distribution reports that The Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA), staged at the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre in the coastal town of Swakopmund, was lit up with 18 Robe BMFLs forming part of a large Robe rig. dB Audio Namibia were entrusted to supply the full technical support for the awards hosted on 1 May and the main event, held on 2 May, both of which were broadcast live for NBC TV.

Rockstar 4000 were the producers of this popular production, while MTC (Mobile Telecommunications Company and NBC (Namibian Broadcasting Corporation), were the main sponsors.

The inspiration for the lighting design came from Jonathan Bandli from Bad Weather, who was commissioned by dB Audio Namibia. "We wanted to simplify the design and go back to basics," said Jonathan. "While we wanted to have something elegant and grand, the lighting had to be versatile to acc

Norway - Just inside the Arctic Circle, in northern Norway, is the town of Bod°, where the new, multipurpose Stormen Konserthuset is an important addition to the area's cultural facilities.

"From the initial planning stages, the acoustic quality of the various venues was a major element to consider," explains Stormen's technical director Håvard Christensen. "We contracted Drammen Lyd AS to install d&b audiotechnik V-Series systems in three of the venues: the Main Hall, the Small Hall and the SINUS. We've also acquired two portable E-Series systems that we can deploy anywhere in the one of the centre's open spaces."

The Main Hall is the largest of Stormen's venues and has been designed to serve a wide range of performance styles. "The stage can be completely transformed", explains Christensen, "from a classical acoustic hall to a theatre
