UK - A Radical Lighting RADlite NG1 digital media server is in action on the current Australian Pink Floyd UK arena tour which has just kicked off again with a completely new design for 2007. The RADlite is being used for soft-edging and masking images, movies and effects being projected onto a 60ft wide upstage arched surface with a 5m diameter circular truss hung in front of it.

Lighting director Phil White and show projectionist Chris Gadd were instrumental in getting RADlite specified for the tour, having used the system before and knowing that lighting and video supplier Entec has also invested in RADlite systems.

Visuals are looked after during the show by Gadd, along with White and video aficionado Richard Hutton. These three are joined by super-tech Simon 'Boff' Howarth, another Entec regular, and rigger Danny Spratt. Lighting has again been designed by Dave Hill, who

UK - When the award winning team at ElectricFly Productions took on the task of designing the UK and European leg of Jarvis Cocker's new tour, they turned to Maxedia as the digital media server for the job. Using the artwork on Cocker's latest album Jarvis as the foundation for the stage design, Nick Jevons created a rig, rich in LEDs and deep in novelty.

Most of the early design was created on Martin Show Designer, back in the ElectricFly studios. This was then manipulated and pixel mapped using Maxedia.

"As we did all the programming in the office, when I got out on site it was all there, I just had to tweak it a bit," says Jevons. "When we got it up and running at the first venue of the tour, we realised it was too tight a fit, so using the Maxedia I was able to do some quick pixel mapping and reconfigured the graphics in just ten minutes. The show sti

UK - Christie's working relationship with the Harrods brand has been extended with the installation of an LX66A 6500 ANSI lumen digital projector in the Harrods Estates office in Mayfair.

The system integrators were London-based Handy AV, who in just five years have built up an extensive portfolio of clients in their specialist areas of providing a complete systems approach to corporate and retail. Their product supply ranges from their specialist own-branded HandySCREEN and interactive HandyTOUCH displays (such as those showcased at the Hayward Gallery on London's South Bank) as well as mainstream A/V utilities.

Christie's long association with Harrods extends back to the Peter Pan window display during Christmas 2003, which was followed up with the permanent installation of two Christie S+16K 16,0000 lumen DLP projectors, firing onto a vast 4.7 x 3.5m portrait canvas

UK - Lighting and visual designers Dan Hardiman and Dave Farmer of THC Design added fast moving visual coherence and plenty of optical energy to the Lost Prophets' short UK arena tour.

A major element of this was five columns of 33-string Barco MiSTRIP supplied by XL Video. These were specified by Hardiman, who had been wanting to introduce video to the band's show for some time. THC has been involved with the Lost Prophets' stage visuals throughout the Liberation Transmission world tour, which is now drawing to a close.

"I wanted something new and exciting for the arena section of the tour - and video was definitely the way to go, and naturally we came to XL as suppliers," says Hardiman. He and Farmer have worked with XL on a number of artists including UB40, Will Young, The Doves and others.

XL's project managers Phil Mercer and Jo Beirne comment, "TH

Hong Kong - Lighthouse reports that its LED screens are being widely applied in the group qualifying matches for the 2008 European Football Championship staged in both Serbia and Croatia.

Using LED screens means that the old 'paint on plywood' approach of pitch-side advertising hoardings, where one advertising space is limited to one commercial brand, no longer applies. Now sports can generate far more advertising revenue because literally anything can be displayed in any space at any time, says the company.

This is a key market for Serbian and regional LED screen specialists Pietra Union, which has been helping various sporting institutions in Eastern Europe to make full use of the advantages that Lighthouse LED screens offer. Most high profile of those has been the home ties in Serbia's and Croatia's group qualifying matches for the 2008 European Football Championship.

Working for The Staging House, Hawthorn also installed a 76ft x 12ft foot stage using its Steeldeck modular staging units, as the stage had to be large enough not only for the live band, but also to hold all of the award winners together for group photos at the end of the awards.

UK - Research for the proposed National Skills Academy for the Creative and Cultural Industries suggests that current and projected growth in live entertainment will generate demand for an extra 10,000 skilled offstage and technical staff over the next decade. And with half of the current workforce expected to retire or leave the industry by 2017, the total estimated number of recruits required rises to around 30,000.

Major employers in the theatre, live music and events industries already report serious difficulties recruiting qualified and experienced professionals in a wide range of disciplines including lighting, sound, stage controls and specialist backstage support staff.

Since January 2007, more than 300 individuals and organisations - including employers, trade bodies and freelancers - have been consulted on the Skills Academy proposal being developed by Creative & Cul

UK - SPS has just completed its work for the Institute of Directors Annual Conference, a one day event that featured presentations by high profile business leaders at London's Royal Albert Hall.

SPS has worked on the IoD flagship event for four years and utilised its extensive experience to design and construct the impressive stage set. SPS used LED screen technology both as a graphic display and a powerful lighting source. This allowed the 2,500 company directors attending the event a clear view of the stage. These LED screens coupled with two large video projection screens created a dramatic stage set. SPS's creative team also produced the graphics and visual content.

The theme of this year's event was Success in a Challenging World. It examined topics such as the rapidly expanding European Union, globalisation of markets and environmental issues. Key note speakers in

UK - Gearhouse Broadcast has invested in a comprehensive Optocore fibre solution from UK distributors Marquee Audio, for use with their Yamaha M7CL consoles on the current ATP Tennis Masters Series.

The company had been seeking a fibre system for audio distribution and freelance sound engineer Steve Ayres was asked by Gearhouse Broadcast's group technical director, Kevin Moorhouse, to investigate the options. "We always listen to the engineers we use, as in the end they have to physically use the kit on site," said Moorhouse. "We already had the M7CL desks - so this was a good solution."

Moorhouse arranged for Marquee Audio to lay on a full Optocore demonstration at the Gearhouse warehouse to ascertain "whether the product would actually deliver the solution we required."

Marquee Audio recommended five Optocore DD32E Digital I/O units as the cor

The current Stage Electrics training programme now includes accredited courses, PASMA Mobile Access Tower training and IPAF Mobile Elevated Work Platform training (MEWP). The courses are a mixture of theory and hands on practical e
