UK - When The Kooks' LD, Pete 'Luton' Hosier, was introduced to GLP Impression LED moving washlights while controlling the set for the TPi Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel, he decided to use them for the Kooks' European tour that was about to follow.

Ian Kirby, who runs LED-Lites - the UK distributor for GLP - had seized the opportunity to make an impression and merged 24 of the fixtures into HSL's design for the production awards.

Coincidentally, Pete Hosier had been asked by Avolites' Steve Warren to pilot the company's Diamond 4 lighting board at the gala event - and surveyed the fixtures he had to work with.

"But when we undid [the GLP] box of tricks I fell in love with them straight away. I knew the Impressions would be perfect for the tour."

The Kooks' lighting production company Colour Sound Experiment purchased 12 fixtures and Hosier set to work

UK - Three ETC Source Four luminaires were spotted last weekend at London's Cans Festival, a free street party dedicated to the art of graffiti. Although described as a 'stencil only' exhibition, the festival included several installation pieces, including this take on the effectiveness (or otherwise) of CCTV, the only art work to be specifically lit.

For those who missed the hype in the national press, a group of international street artists, led by the UK's Banksy, transformed a dank, disused rail tunnel at Waterloo station into a vibrant and exciting art gallery for the three day weekend. While the installation pieces have probably already been dismantled, it is hoped that the wall art may be there for a while yet.

Thailand - The 2000-seat Ratchada Grand Theatre in Bangkok plays host to one of the largest stage productions in the world, Siam Niramit (Siam Dreams). This spectacular show celebrates Thai art and cultural heritage using over 150 actors, 500 colourful costumes and 100 stunningly designed set pieces, some of which are 40ft high.

Recently cited in the Guinness Book of Records as having the tallest proscenium arch at 11.95m, the venue was in need of some lighting fixtures with a reputation of similar stature. Project lighting designer Poon Limpapun turned to French lantern manufacturers, Robert Juliat.

"The Robert Juliat 700SX range really fits our criteria," explains Limpapun. "With throwing distances from our front electrics bars of over 30m, the 2000W Profiles do their job very well. Overall, I can say that they exceeded our expectations."

UK - i-Pix has created a new fixture - the BB 7 - a seven cell high powered homogenized 10 degree RGB lightsource which is being utilised by Radiohead's lighting & visuals designer Andi Watson for the band's world tour which kicked off in the US last week. 48of the BB7s are in various positions around the rig, including 25 in five custom five-way frames produced by Specialz

Watson, is also using 48 of i-Pix new production model BB4s on his front truss. This is a four cell high power homogenized 20 degree RGB lightsource. Additionally, there are14 i-Pix Satellites with holographic film mounted on the floor in and around the backline to light the band at close quarters.

This project started when i-Pix' Chris Ewington visited the US last October to see a new prototype narrow optic. He then showed Watson the BB 4 which was already in production in January this year, along with a t

Denmark - Martin Professional reports a good start to 2008 based on healthy activity in all the markets the company operates in.

Martin lifted revenue slightly to $55.7 million in Q1 2008 from $54.9 million in Q1 2007. Underlying the slight improvement is organic growth partly offset by the weaker DKK/USD exchange rate.

Consistent with expectations, profit before tax was $4.6 million in Q1 2008 compared with $1.8 million in Q1 2007.

The Q1 numbers come on the heels of excellent 2007 numbers for the company. Revenue in 2007 improved by 14.1% to a record level of $234.5 million from $205.5 million in 2006. Profit before tax increased to $16.2 million in 2007 from $3.8 million in 2006.

A company statement states: "Martin continues to reap the benefits of quality and product development improvements that have resulted from a completed business transformation process."

UK - The year's great innovation: after an high-profile debut at the 2008 edition of the Frankfurt expo, SGM's new Giotto Digital 1500 moving head fixture marks the start of a new age in the automated lighting world, say the company.

A key feature of the Giotto Digital 1500 is the Digital Module which, due to a clever application of DLP (TI) technology, enables the Giotto to project graphic effects with the brightness and speed of traditional moving head fixtures. "Giotto Digital 1500 is the first and only moving head fixture on the market able to create all-digital, completely customizable graphic effects, finally overcoming the typical limits of effects generated by traditional gobo, iris, beam shaper and zoom components," the company states.

Giotto Digital 1500 will be presented for the first time in the UK at BAFTA - the British Academy of Film and Television Art

China - The National Centre for the Performing Art in Beijing, more commonly known as the National Grand Theatre, is one of the more futuristic theatres in the world; the icon and symbol of the new China.

Its most distinctive feature is the imposing titanium and glass structure, shaped like an egg, which is entirely surrounded by an artificial lake that reflects the whole facility.

The only entrance to the structure is through a tunnel that runs below water level. The interior has been divided into three main sectors: the Opera Hall, the Music Hall and the Theatre Hall.

The lighting system is Clay Paky-based, including 98 Alpha Profile 1200, 90 Alpha Wash 1200 and

UK - Hawthorns have recently made a major investment in Barco's range of products. The first decision was the purchase of Barco's FLM range of HD 3cip DLP projectors, followed by Barco's Encore system.

Hawthorns has invested over £300,000 in HD DLP projectors and HD signal processing to allow them to cope with the ever increasing demands of their corporate clients who require increasingly high specifications and levels of high definition.

The projectors were given their inaugural run on Hawthorn's G4S event working for the Concerto Group, where Hawthorn's project manager, Oliver Moores, commented: "Using the projectors with the processor makes life so much easier out on site. The set up was a dream and being able to blend two screens that quickly meant we had more time for rehearsal and the event ran seamlessly."

Commercial Lighting revenue increased 60% over first quarter 2007. Featuring designers, retailers, models and fashion-obsessed members of the public, the festival introduces the latest styles, trends and fashions from around the world. The event took part along the Orchard Road in front of the Ngee Ann City shopping mall. "I have been using other consoles for quite a while and I was looking for a new challenge," explained Tan, "I am very pleased with the grandMA. Despite being relatively new to the board it is already obvious to me that the grandMA is very powerful and gives plenty of options unheard of in other consoles. It's also very user-friendly."

UK - Currently on tour in the UK before opening in the West End in June is Zorro the Musical, a stage production set to the Latin American music of the Gipsy Kings and featuring flamenco dancing, sword-fighting and acrobatics. Based on Isabel Allende's 2005 bestseller Zorro: A Novel, the stage musical is a prequel to the traditional events of the Zorro legend.

The show was lit by Ben Ormerod who is known more for lighting classical theatre, contemporary dance and opera than musicals.

"When I read the script and the novel that the script was based on, it was obvious to me that the show needed to have strong Californian sunlight as a major element, and you can't create that with anything other than tungsten. We might have used par cans but they would have used up the very limited rig space for just that one look".

"Clearly everything had to move to

Switzerland - Gahrens & Battermanns provided over 73sq.m of Mitsubishi Electric IDT series LED screens at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show. One of Europe's leading display hire businesses, the company operates the largest fleet of Mitsubishi's high resolution IDT6 and IDT4 Black Package indoor screens in Europe - all of which were in action over the 10-day event on behalf of Chrysler, Honda, Lexus and Bentley.

Motor shows are notoriously demanding applications for big screen displays, and especially so for LED screens as colour fidelity, contrast and image quality must be maintained over wide viewing angles and close distances. Having already experienced the superior performance of the Mitsubishi screens at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, Chrysler, Honda, Lexus and Bentley once again specified IDT4 4.00mm and IDT6 6.00mm Black Package screens for the main video features on

UK - Artistic Licence has been celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, marking the time during which the company has evolved from its rock 'n' roll origins into a company focused on architectural lighting and installations, whilst simultaneously developing its international presence.

Talking to Robert Bell in 2004 for his book Let There Be Light, managing director Wayne Howell says: " I take the company name quite seriously. Lateral thinking is the most important part of a design . . . (in addition) you make it as future proof and reusable as you can."

By focusing on the two halves of the company - product development and project design & installation - Howell has developed a product range which can be taken both as total solutions or as components for incorporation into individual designs.

Feedback has always been of prime importance to Artistic Licence

USA - American DJ has introduced the X-Move LED which utilises one super-size 20-watt white LED to create a brawny beam that's powerful enough to project gobo patterns and colours across floors, walls and ceilings, says the company.

Although the X-Move LED's effects are indistinguishable from a conventional moving head to the eye, the unit offers the benefits and ease of LED technology, such as a long 50,000-hour rated lamp life and a low power draw. At 44W, it consumes a fraction of the energy of a traditional 250W effect. In addition to saving energy, this lets the operator hook up more units on a single electrical circuit.

The X-Move LED is also much smaller than a typical 250W effect, weighing only 10 lbs. and standing just 12.5" high. The fixture's compact size allows it to fit virtually anywhere, even in the tightest spaces, and makes it easily transportable for ban

The Netherlands / Belgium - In an operation involving almost 200 staff in two countries and hundreds of tons of stock and equipment, the Ampco Flashlight Group has just completed a series of office and warehouse moves designed to relocate almost all its operations into three brand new, purpose designed facilities in Holland and Belgium.

Over the course of two months, three buildings have been completed, fitted out and equipped in Utrecht, Holland and Boom, Belgium to house all but two of the group's 14 separate companies including the head office of the parent company, Ampco Flashlight Holding.

The final piece of the jigsaw was put in place when lighting rental company Flashlight Rental moved into the massive 15,000 square metre (162,000 square foot) Rental and Technology building at Proostwetering 50, on a new industrial park outside the centre of Utrecht.

UK - Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's Dancing on Ice: The Live Tour is a nationwide tour following on from the successful series of Dancing on Ice which was broadcast on ITV1.Durham Marenghi designed the lighting for the tour using two grandMA full-size and four MA NSPs. The idea was to emulate the TV show on a grander scale whilst making everything visible and attractive to an arena audience.

The grandMA is the console of choice for programmer Tim Routledge who comments, "With both a video and lighting element, certain parts were programmed simultaneously using both consoles networked together. Even a last minute request to drive some monitor software over Art-Net was not a problem and easily integrated into the show."

The lighting rig includes 56 x Vari*Lite VL3500Q wash, 34 x Clay Paky Alpha Spot HPE 1200, 20 x Clay Paky Alpha Beam 300, 20 x Clay
