UK - Hudderfield's Festival of Light was taken to a new level this year with the help of PixelRange PixelLine 1044 LED batons and a Green Hippo Hippotizer HD, hired through HSL.

The annual winter event put on by Kirklees Council was this year expanded to fill the weekend across 2-5 December. As well as the usual street theatre spectacular which traditionally packs out the town's St George's Square, the council prepared other events, all project managed by TG Events' Tim Garbutt.

The major new addition to this year's festival was the illumination of The Media Centre. James Bawn - normally of A.C. Entertainment Technologies - designed a temporary lighting installation for the exterior of the prominent building. Bawn has worked with TG Events on many architectural designs in the past.

UK - Entertainment lighting supplier White Light have supplied new lighting systems or lighting system upgrades - and in some cases also rigging, drapes and audio systems - to a wide range of schools around the UK.

Close to White Light's base in Wimbledon, south-west London, the company supplied new internally wired lighting bars and a new LSC EKO twelve-way dimmer system for the Drama Room at Merton's Rutlish School; White Light have also carried out PAT testing on the equipment in the school's main hall.

Show Business - The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) has announced the final registration and exhibitor numbers for the 2011 NAMM Show. At show close, NAMM reported 90,114 registered attendees, a three percent increase from last year and representing a new attendance record for the 109-year-old show. International registration also experienced a two percent increase from last year to 10,400. Another sign of economic recovery in the industry, the association reported 1,417 exhibitors at this year's show, including 247 new exhibitors.

USA - David Taylor, the theatre consultant and lighting designer, died in Taipei, Taiwan on Monday, January 17. He was 48. He died falling from the 14th floor of the Howard Plaza Hotel. Early newspaper reports suggested that the death was a suicide; however, updated reports indicate that the police have refused to speculate on the cause of death. A full police report is said to be pending.

A popular, well-connected, and highly involved member of the industry, Taylor was born in London. He studied theatre aesthetics at the University of London, followed by attendance at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and graduate studies at Royal Holloway, University of London.

France - GDS were recently commissioned to deliver a bespoke stage manager's console for the world famous Théâtre du Châtelet.

The brief was to provide the theatre with a console that enabled them to integrate their control surfaces and that would give the theatre more functionality and control than they would get from a traditional stage managers desk. The client wanted to control much more than the usual stage managers functionality, requiring a product that enabled third party integration.

Théâtre du Châtelet is situated along the quays of the Seine in Paris. Constructed by Gabriel Davoud in 1862, in its time it was the largest performance hall in Paris and hosted some of the principal tours in Parisian history. The Theatre is a multi-discipline venue hosting a schedule of performances from opera to dance and progressive theatre productions.

CCG provided more than 1300 mixed fixtures from its extensive inventory of CCG, for the Four Seasons Hotel screening venue and the opening night after-party held at the Pearl Qatar. Miles, who first previewed the EC-20 video panels at the PLASA exhibition in September, was looking for "a lightweight, fairly high resolution, modular LED system that I could use on Leftfield and on some other shows. David Stewart at Martin gave me a demo and I really liked how it looked. I was also very impressed by the P3-100 video processor."

Olympic Marathon - To celebrate the London 2012 Olympics, Shakespeare's Globe will stage all of the playwright's 38 plays, each in a different language and by a different international company. Performances in Maori, Aboriginal languages and Cantonese will all be presented during the season and there will also be a production of Love's Labour's Lost in British Sign Language. Over the course of six weeks, companies including the National Theatre of Greece, Rome's Cometa Off Theatre and Oyun Atolyesi from Istanbul will play the Globe. The Globe itself will also stage one of the plays.

UK - Black Light helped Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrate the end of 2010 in spectacular style by designing, installing and operating a series of technically sophisticated lighting shows for the city's celebrations.

"This was our most exciting Edinburgh's Hogmanay ever," says Stephen Reid, Black Light's head of events. "We used some really exciting new equipment to produce jaw-dropping effects that did full justice to the global importance of the event."

To kick-start the proceedings, the company lit the Son et Lumiére finale to the annual torch-light procession on the night of 30 December. This culminated with a dynamic lighting display that brought the architecture of the capital's Calton Hill to life. France - Budillon Rabatel has invested €15m in upgrading its alluvial quarry at Izeaux, in south eastern France. For the special inauguration, the company called upon sound, light and video specialists, Euro Sono Alex T'Rem, to supply lighting for this tomb-like location, spread over 100 hectares.

The exact location of this gravel pit is called Mollard Mouton, and many political and economic celebrities visited the Region iséroise for the occasion. The lighting system featured six PR Lighting XLED 590 LED moving head washlights, which had to perform in the difficult conditions. These were accompanied by effects from StarWay - all working in harmony to create a spectacular show under the open skies.
