UK - Back in December 2009, Litestructures were approached by newly formed Formula One racing team, Virgin Racing, to design and manufacture a hospitality structure for the 2010 Formula One season. The structure, known in the paddock as a 'motorhome', naturally had to be portable to allow transportation between events, but equally, as a key part of the company's branding, it had to be different and have outstanding visual impact to highlight the team's new backer and stakeholder - Richard Branson's Virgin Group - for their debut Formula One season.

Litestructures immediately established a working relationship with the professional and ambitious young team, and once the drawings were signed off in February, Litestructures started work on the build with impressive results: the main structure is built from two-tier aluminium trussing in LitePro 290/390 with a brushed finish crowned

The equipment was supplied by lighting contractor PRG and the movement was an integral element of LD Al Gurdon's design for the event.

This year's show was a departure from an LED-heavy televisual aesthetic and introduced several different theatrical elements that looked spectacular, both for the TV audience and the 18,000 people watching in the arena. The automation system allowed a completely different and dynamic scene to be created for each of the 39 competing countries.

USA - Technomad is adding more power to its range of PowerChiton weatherproof amplifier modules. Able to produce 1600 watts for 8-ohm systems and 1800 watts for 4-ohm systems, the new PowerChiton4 offers more than three times the power of the current highest-power model (500 watts) in the same compact, NEMA-enclosed package, says the company.

The PowerChiton, with its IP66 protection classification, is billed as "a practically bomb-proof amplifier-in-a-shell". The IP66 rating confirms ingress protection (IP) for persons (such as electrical safety) and equipment (dust, dirt and water penetration). The latter makes PowerChiton amplifiers suitable for outdoor installations for protection against the elements. Its low-profile, modular design also gives systems designers and integrators the freedom and flexibility to place the amplifiers closer to the loudspeaker (including

UK - Belfast-based Production Services Ireland (PSI), a regular provider of rigging services and equipment for Ireland's leading entertainment shows, has launched a series of regular two-day rgging awareness training courses.

This initiative is the brainchild of PSI's Sean Pagel, who also heads up the company's rigging team. It's something that PSI has wanted to do for some time - but the recent move to larger premises with a large dedicated training room has really facilitated this on a practical level.

Apart from the demand for it, one advantage for PSI explains Pagel is that many venues are council run, and have a commitment to keep their staff updated with the latest good working practices.
