USA - The Stage, Miami's newest music performance venue opened 7 January and is rapidly becoming the place to hear leading music acts, with styles ranging from R&B to jazz to pop/rock and even some New Age tossed in for good measure. The sound reinforcement system is drawn from the catalogue of D.A.S. Audio.

Interface Sound, a Miami-based sound services firm that specializes in live sound for concerts and the special events/corporate industrial markets while also maintaining a presence in the commercial installation business, was contracted to design and install the new sound reinforcement system at The Stage.

Ralph Alvarez, Interface Sound's owner/operator and designer of the sound system, comments, "The Stage is an area roughly 3,500sq.ft with a stage positioned along the back wall of the space. Because the venue has a wide range of music performances, we needed a louds

USA - One hundred miles from the start of the historic Natchez Trace, the city of Ridgeland, MS is steeped in the rich tradition of southern hospitality, with a small town charm and big city amenities. Ridgeland is the birthplace of country music artist Faith Hill and home to St. Columb's Episcopal Church.

The congregation of St. Columb's recently moved into their new facility. The sanctuary itself is traditional in appearance, with high ceilings and large, ornate stained glass windows, but with a few contemporary touches. Along with the new building came a new sound system, installed by Josh Sanders from Players Audio Video of Jackson, MS.

Being traditional in design, the room has a fairly live acoustical signature, which can spell trouble for amplified sound. So right from the start, Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC24R Digitally Steerable Arrays were specified as the main loudspeaker

Australia - Equitana is probably the most anticipated annual equine event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere attracting over 50,000 visitors per event. It is three days of everything equine featuring horses, Olympic gold medalists, educators, Aussie cowboys, an elite equine competition programme and over 350 exhibitors making up the largest equine shopping spree in Australia.

Equitana 2010 was held in November at Melbourne Showgrounds with Audio Visual Dynamics contracting Deluxe Audio to supply the sound system for the Grand Pavilion, one of the largest tensile fabric membrane structures in the region.

With many very expensive and highly strung horses performing, it was essential that the audio was carefully delivered.

"You had to deliver so that the audience could hear but there were no uneven sounds - you couldn't have a horse come round the corner and freak out

UK / USA - More than 20 years of touring with such diverse acts as Rage Against The Machine, Maroon 5, Cypress Hill and Weird Al Yankovic has prepared FOH engineer Joel Lonky for a wide range of performance issues, but few are as chaotic as his current gig mixing FOH for Rob Zombie. "The show is unpredictable," he reports. "I don't have the luxury of knowing what will happen next, so I needed a console that would allow me to stay on top of any situation that might arise. The PRO6 turned out to be the ideal solution."

One PRO6 feature that Lonky really appreciates is Area B, which allows him to keep one fader group 'always on top' at the right-hand side of the surface. "I use it for Mr Zombie's mics and effects returns," he says. "I can be all over the console, yet still have Rob's priority channels at my fingertips in any scene. It's incredibly

Germany - Alcons Audio will be showing the production version of its latest pro-ribbon line array system, maximising its carbon (cone) footprint and giving a glimpse of a new product group at Prolight+Sound in April.

The Dutch manufacturer will be exhibiting the production-version of the LR24 pro-ribbon line array system. Previewed at the show last year, the system marks an important advance for the company within the concert touring and large-scale installation market.

Designed to be able to deliver the same SPL as equivalent products in the mid-size line array category, but with 15dB less distortion, the Alcons LR24 system utilises the company's pro-ribbon technology to "set a new benchmark in terms of SPL, projection control and sound quality".

Also on show will be the BQ211, a high output subwoofer system based on the all carbon-coned 21" woofer. Featuring

USA / UK - Danny Boyle's latest film, 127 Hours, famously recreates the ordeal of young mountaineer Aron Ralston, who gets trapped in a Utah canyon when a boulder slips, trapping his arm. A large selection of DPA microphones provided by UK distributor Sound Network was used extensively to record the dramatic tension and ambience of the surroundings. Boyle has described 127 Hours as "an action movie in which the hero doesn't move".

The sound crew from Sound 24 included sound designer and supervising sound editor Glenn Freemantle, sound effects recordist Hugo Adams, Foley artists Nicolas Becker and Adam Mendez and Foley editor Jon Olive. Adams was the only member of the crew to travel to Utah, spending 24 hours at

Columbia - Sound recordist Martin Abell has returned from the Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias in Colombia with an order for two of Roland's R-4 Pro audio field recorders, after a successful recording and teaching mission.

One of the most important literary events in the Hispanic world, this was the sixth edition of the Hay Festival Cartagena, but the first time that a technical specialist from the UK office had attended to train local engineers in the art of archiving. "We were seeing too much material coming back in a variety of different formats, often low quality recordings, which in turn restricted what we could do with it," says Martin Abell.

The Hay Festival organisation currently offers access to an extensive archive of recordings, and is discussing other applications such as commercial podcasts. "The better the quality of the recording, th

Belgium - ADB Lighting will host the worldwide launch of Freedom and Liberty, two "highly advanced lighting control desks", at ProLight&Sound 2011 in Frankfurt (6-9 April 2011). The consoles are based on the powerful new Hathor software platform, which was previewed in 2010.

Freedom is designed to offer a solution where large numbers of multi-parameter instruments need to be controlled with "ultra-fast access". The desk allows users to control multiple LED fittings, intelligent lights and media servers as well as standard generic dimming systems, say ADB.

Liberty is aimed at space-challenging environments and any cost-conscious venue seeking a fully integrated solution to control conventional and moving lights, LED sources and other modern equipment. It all comes in a compact and portable console with the capacity of much larger and more expensive lighting

The LD Stinger 2 x 12" provides a whopping power of 600 W and a very high sound pressure level of 128 dB max. This is most certainly loud and very proud.

"Powerful performances, easy handling and high pressure levels qualify these speakers for all types of full range applications, making them perfect for stage usage. The housing is built from high quality Birch Plywood

The Netherlands - Sound Projects has introduced the self powered SPX-65 to augment the SPX-series of identical, yet acoustically complementary loudspeaker systems.

Within the SPX family, each model is optimised for a specific coverage or function. In those situations where one point source cabinet will not deliver the necessary SPL or coverage, the SPX-65's neatly fills the gap, says the company.

Because of its constant horizontal coverage angle of 65 degrees and semi curved wide 15 degrees vertical radiation, it will deliver a flat slice of audio in the mid and higher frequencies. Wide enough to be used as a single in-fill or narrow enough to be used in multiples, a column or as a traditional sized line array module. The pragmatic fly frame and greatly simplified rigging hardware help the technician to quickly find the proper angles.

Germany - Hamburg Airport claims to be the world's oldest airport still at its original location, with its first flights taking off in January, 1911. Exactly 100 years later, the airport celebrated by hosting live music and presentations on five stages. Carrying the festivities to 3,500 attendees were Meyer Sound systems featuring the new MIna line array loudspeaker provided by Blue Noise of Hamburg.

Staged in the airport's cavernous (6,200 m2) Terminal 1, the event featured a 30-minute show on airport history along with performances by artists hailing from the airport's far-flung destinations. According to Blue Noise managing director Hendrik Rogel, the combination of a highly reverberant space and simultaneous programmes on multiple stages presented an extraordinary challenge. "The terminal is made of metal, glass, and marble," he notes, "so we had to avoid send
