UK - In 1998, audio production companies Andy Rose Consultants (ARC) and Sound Moves used a Soundtracs DPC-II digital console to broadcast two live operas from the famous Glyndebourne venue in Sussex. Thirteen years on, the same two companies have facilitated another live broadcast for the same place, this time using the DPC-II's latest successor, the DiGiCo SD10B.

The performance of Wagner's only comic opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, was broadcast live on 26 June to 19 Picturehouse cinemas throughout England, Scotland and across Europe, as well as on the Guardian newspaper's website.

ARC's Andy Rose and Steve Williams of Sound Moves originally worked together at Fleetwood Mobiles in 1988. Ever since they have collaborated on a wide range of projects, with the broadcast of the 1998 Glyndebourne operas (Rodelinda and Simon Boccanegra) using W

The Netherlands - Vondelpark, just to the south east of the old city centre, is perhaps the most cherished of parks in Amsterdam.

Originally laid out in 1864 and now stretching over an area of some 45 hectares, the park boasts serene stretches of water landscaped with trees, gardens and meandering pathways which lead the visitor to the Blauwe Theehuis (Blue Tea House), a haven for refreshment and conversation since 1937.

It wasn't until 1974 that the Openlucht Theater (Open Air Theatre) was built nearby to provide a venue for both musical and dramatic entertainment and, every summer since then, free events are staged, attracting large and loyal audiences whatever the weather.

Amsterdammer Rolf Dijkstra, the managing director of Netherlands based sound company Audiopro, was more than a little concerned when he learned that local residents had initiated legal proceedings to ba

UK - Prism Media Products, whose brands include Prism Sound, SADiE and Imerge, has been presented with its Queen's Award for Enterprise in the category of International Trade. The presentation was made by Hugh Duberly, Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, and took place at the company's headquarters in Stretham. Also present were Jim Paice, MP for South East Cambridgeshire and Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire County Council.

Hugh Duberly pointed out that a Queen's Award is equivalent to an individual receiving an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours. "As Her Maje

UK - Entec Sound & Light co-ordinated the full European touring production package and sourced key crew for the recent X Japan tour, and also supplied lighting equipment.

This was the first foray into Europe for the cult Japanese heavy metal superstars founded in 1989, who reformed in 2009 having disbanded in 1997 at the peak of a remarkable career in Japan. They have recorded four studio albums and sold over 30m records and 2m home videos.

Entec was brought in by the band's tour director Richard Ames who due to his own busy schedule touring with Supertramp in Canada, realised that it would be a practical and tactical decision to get an experienced European based rental company onboard to advance and handle all aspects of the tour, including crewing and sorting all the technical production departments.

Says Ames, "I specifically wanted a company that was dynamic and agi

PLASA 2011 will see a landmark product introduction for Harman's JBL Professional with the début of its Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers: eight models designed to bring what the company says is a "new level of sonic excellence" to dance club environments. The JBL Marquis Dance Club Series incorporates new driver configurations and enclosure designs to deliver immersive sound with "exceptional clarity and fidelity, even at higher volume levels".

"JBL began offering loudspeakers for club use back in the 1970s, and JBL products helped define club sound when the industry was just beginning," says Jon Sager, Senior Manager, Installed Sound, JBL Professional. "The JBL Marquis Dance Club Series continues this heritage of innovation with a range of purpose-designed loudspeakers that brings high-impact sound to club goers who want to feel and hear

Sommer Cable is set to introduce a range of cable and connectors at PLASA 2011. Heading the list is the Semicolon 4 AES/EBU and DMX patch / microphone cable, a studio-oriented 4-wire miniature microphone cable with a diameter of just 5.8 mm which, says Sommer Cable, "can do almost everything the big ones can". It has dual shielding and may be cross wired for audio purposes, and the company says its performance makes it an ideal AES/EBU or DMX cable. Its small diameter allows it to fit miniature connectors such as 3.5mm mini jacks, mini XLR or phono/RCA plugs.

The Tricone XXL cable and connector is a rugged, flexible guitar, instrument and patch cable with capacitance optimised for loss-free treble reproduction over long distances. The matching Tricone XXL jack plug allows solder / gas free connection for low and constant transfer resistance values, while the dual hexagonal cr

USA - On his recent tour, ex-Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant joined forces with guitarist and Nashville producer Buddy Miller. Teaming up in the Band of Joy, the two concocted a mélange of sounds - from classic rock to folk and gospel-that demand utmost clarity and versatility from a live reinforcement system. That task fell to a Meyer Sound Mica line array loudspeaker system provided by Livonia, Mich.-based Thunder Audio.

Roy Williams, the veteran FOH engineer at the helm of Plant's live mix, reports, "There are some softer numbers - particularly duets with Patty Griffin - with a breathy quality that demands absolute transparency. But on others, we push it up to send a message to the Zep fraternity that, when we want to, we can still do it. The Mica system handles the dynamics with no problems at all."

The tour's complete Meyer Sound complement comprised

UK - Midas digital consoles were once again a highlight of the T in the Park festival as some 150 bands converged in Scotland for the annual three-day event, now in its 17th year. Scottish rental company EFX Audio supplied the Radio 1/NME stage with Midas Digital front and back with two XL8s at FOH and a PRO6 and PRO9 on monitors, while numerous bands, including Pulp and Foo Fighters on the main stage, arrived with their own Midas digital set-ups.

Steph Fleming of EFX, who also ran the Radio 1/NME stage last year, noted, "One development from previous years was that I don't think we met an engineer who had never seen Midas Digital before."

As in previous years, EFX set up the two XL8s in tandem, so that guest engineers could listen in to the preceding band and get a feel for the EQ, as well as lining up gates, compressors, reverbs and overall functionality prior to l

UK - Sheffield-based Audio Engineering Services has installed an HK Audio Actor system and an Allen & Heath WZ3 16:2 console into a new venue - Bar Axis in Hoyland, Barnsley.

With Bar Axis being on the second floor, a PA install was a must to save bands humping gear up and down the stairs. Bar Axis promoter DJ Rossi has always been an admirer of HK Audio, and when he called Audio Engineering Services for advice, they took him a demo Actor system. The system's sound matched the acoustics of the venue and Rossi immediately ordered one, along with the A&H Mix Wizard. Rossi said: "I have always been impressed by the quality of HK Audio, and it was always first choice when it came to choosing a system for the venue."

Audio Engineering Services has also just taken delivery of an HK Audio Contour array, powered by Lab.Gruppen amplifiers. The system was bought to service the

UK - This summer's series of live shows in London's Hyde Park was kicked off in fine style by Kings of Leon. Playing to 60,000 fans each night - the biggest headline shows of their career so far - the band utilsed a comprehensive package of Sennheiser equipment.

Britannia Row was the sound contractor for the Hyde Park concerts and Sennheiser's Phil Cummings and Tim Sherratt were in attendance on the first two days, to offer any assistance that Brit Row, the Kings of Leon or the support acts may have needed.

The array of Sennheiser equipment carried by KOL includes MD431 vocal mics, e 904s and e 614s on the drum kit and e 906s on the backline. Complementing these are 2000 series wireless guitar systems and 2000 in-ear monitors.

The band has been using Sennheiser equipment for five years, frontman Caleb Followill and his band mates switching to the MD431 for vocals last Decemb

Australia - DPA's new Reference Standard microphones, specified by sound designer Mick Potter and supplied by Amber Technology to Melbourne production company System Sound, are being used on the Australian production of Love Never Dies.

The 21-piece orchestra is miked with a selection of DPA mics including the new 4011A and 4011C cardioid mics from DPA's new Reference Standard series, plus 4007 omnis across brass, woodwind and percussion. For the string section, Potter has chosen a combination of 4011As and 4011Cs as ambient mics and 4061 omni miniatures for close miking, with a 4099B instrument clip mic used on double bass.

All 36 cast members are miked with DPA 4061 miniatures, with the principals wearing two each with dual transmitters and receivers.

"The orchestra sound is amazing and the overall sound of the show is very impressive," says sound supervis

UAE - Melody House, distributors of Primacoustics has recently supplied the Dubai campus of the School of Audio Engineering (SAE) with the RX9 downfire stabilisers.

"We initially tried the flat version but as their stands are quite high the downfire versions provided great results," commented Simon Short, acoustics specialist at Melody House.

He added, "We have sold quite a number of recoil stabilizers in the past few months as the difference is really audible. The best part is that they work on pretty much any studio monitor and straight out of the box."

Germany - The ratings for the recent women's world cup tournament put the women's game firmly on par with the men's, with the quarter final featuring the hosts drawing over 16m viewers in Germany alone. And as was the case at the last two men's world championships - in Germany (2006) and South Africa (2010) - systems from Electro-Voice and Dynacord made a sound contribution to the safety and enjoyment of spectators at this year's women's world cup.

The Sinsheim, Dresden, Frankfurt, and Berlin stadiums all boast installations that meet the highest modern standards in terms of both entertainment value, and safety; and whilst the Sinsheim venue, with a capacity of 25,000, is no coliseum, the Berlin, Dresden, and Frankfurt stadiums are among Europe's biggest and best.

A mammoth four-year renovation back in 2004 restored Berlin's historic Olympic Stadium to its former glory, adding

UK - Live communications and production agency DesignScene production designed and managed the first full scale large live event to be staged at the new flagship St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, a charity fundraiser organised by the Anderson Foundation in aid of The National Autistic Society.

It is the second year that DesignScene has produced the event for the Anderson Foundation. The project was managed for them by Ben Turner, and designed by DesignScene's creative director, Attila Keskin. Turner comments, "It was very exciting to be working in London's newest high profile hotel. As nothing this large had been done before we had a real chance to set a standards."

The high profile Anderson Foundation event for about 250 people was staged in the hotel's main space off the main reception areas. DesignScene's brief included the specification and supply of lighting, sound

USA - Since opening its doors in 1981, the Blue Note in New York City has become one of the world's premier jazz clubs, playing host to some of the genre's greatest musicians. When the venue's audio system needed to be upgraded, Yamaha's TXn amplifiers were chosen.

Installed by audio specialists Petrix, the club's layout and famous nightly opening made for a challenging installation.

"While the acoustic characteristics of the room are good, the venue is 'in the round' and there is only 15.5' from the front of the stage to the wall at the rear of the venue, 30' to the left and 46' to the right. The ceiling is low and the 200 seats are lined up right against the stage, all the way to the walls," says Petrix owner Amit Peleg.

Because of the layout and the music being mostly acoustic, 80% of the audience sits within 20' of the stage, so a lot of stage sound is audible.
