UK - Lost and Sound, a feature-length documentary made by a partially deaf film-maker about music and hearing loss, will be screened as part of Deaf Awareness Week at Cambridge Picture House on Sunday 12 May and Thursday 16 May and Exeter on 13 May. All events will include special Q&As with the director/producer Lindsey Dryden as well as music writer Nick Coleman and Dr David Baguley, Head of Audiology at Cambridge University Hospital, who both appear in the film.

The film follows music critic Coleman, dancer Emily Thornton and pianist Holly Loach over two years, as they rediscover music after deafness strikes. It features a rich musical soundtrack, often manipulated to reveal what deafness sounds like, and insights from top neuroscientists about the human relationship with music. One in six people in the UK will experience hearing loss, and the film asks what would you d

USA - Last month, Cirque du Soleil presented One Night for ONE DROP at the O Theatre, located in the Bellagio on the Las Vegas Strip. The one-night-only production, which combined talent and production expertise from seven other resident productions, was held on World Water Day on 22 March to help raise awareness on the increasing global water crisis.

Audio specialist Sennheiser, which has a longstanding relationship with Cirque du Soleil that extends over two decades, loaned several channels of wireless equipment through its Global Relations team to help ONE DROP realise its creatively and technically ambitious production.

Established by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté, ONE DROP is a non-profit organization whose mission is to 'ensure that water is accessible to all, today and forever'. According to some estimates, nearly one billion people in the

The Netherlands - Alcons Audio ahas nnounced the start of its Launch Partner Programme for the LR24 pro-ribbon line-array system.

Designed specifically for the concert touring and large-scale installation market, and first shown at the Prolight+Sound in 2010, Alcons Audio has now concluded LR24s initial beta phase.

Since then, the Alcons' R&D team has worked very hard to produce what is seen as the holy grail of sound reinforcement: HiFi sound quality at concert sound pressure levels. This has now been achieved.

One of Alcons Audio's strengths is the development of its own acoustics, mid/high frequency transducers, amplified electronics and processing. The pièce de résistance of the LR24 is the newly developed, multiple-patented pro-ribbon transducer for the reproduction of mid and high frequencies.

Italy - The sound team at the Parco Della Musica Auditorium in Rome recently turned to DPA Microphones' Reference Standard 4017 Shotgun Microphones to record the audio for a specially commissioned double DVD of two operas that were being performed as part of the Santa Cecilia Opera Studio, a master programme devoted to Bel Canto.

With high quality audio a prerequisite - and with strict instructions from the director that no microphones were to be seen anywhere in the video footage - sound engineer Giacomo De Caterini was initially struggling to work out how he could comply with the director's brief.

"The director wanted to avoid any microphones that could be visible because he was determined to maintain strict focus on the performers," De Caterini explains. "Due to bad experiences in the past, especially on video productions where close-up shots revealed

UK - Audica Professional has announced it is expanding its MICROseries audio system capabilities with the launch of the MULTIzone. Applications include retail outlets, bars and restaurants, hotels, education facilities, museums, visitor centres and other public spaces requiring independent zone input and output control.

Each of the four outputs can be independently configured to provide music from any one of the inputs plus the paging microphone and the relative levels are set by front panel controls. The music is automatically ducked to allow for announcements to be heard clearly. Up to 7 MULTIzone units can be linked for systems of up to 28 zones.

Zone outputs are individually switchable for flat response or Audica loudspeaker EQ, allowing for systems using Audica or any oth

UK - Oval Space, a multi-use arts and events venue in Bethnal Green, has recently invested in an Allen & Heath GLD-80 digital console, supplied by LMC Audio London.

Dominic Gross, head engineer at Oval Space discusses the requirements of a console in an environment and venue such as Oval Space: "As a truly multi-use space, we knew that we needed a flexible and user-friendly console that still sounded great, for both seasoned engineers and those users with more limited experience. The GLD seemed to tick all of the boxes.

"The GLD just seems to work in all the right ways. Menus are where I would expect them to be, the touch screen is excellent, and most importantly, it sounds like an analogue desk. The stage box is a major plus for us too...I never want to see a 48-way multi-core ever again."

Feedback from other users has also been positive. "The response t

The Netherlands - On 30 April 2013, Prince Willem-Alexander became the Netherlands first king in more than a century after his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicated following 33 years on the throne. Taking place in Dutch capital Amsterdam, Queen Beatrix signed the instrument of abdication in the Royal Palace, Amsterdam early in the morning.

Following a brief appearance on the Palace balcony, the investiture of the new King took place in the neighbouring Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, during a ceremony attended by members of royal families from dozens of countries around the world, government officials and key political figures.

During the afternoon, the new King Willem-Alexander and the new Queen Maxima boarded a boat for a two-hour ride, visiting a string of stages with performances and re-enactments of historical, cultural and sportive highlights in Dutch history.

The Netherlands - Dutch PA company, SoundWorks, supplied 28 ME-1 personal monitor mixers for iconic singer, Lee Towers, who recently hosted concerts over several nights at the New Luxor Theatre in Rotterdam.

Monitor engineer, Jens Koolwijk, managed audio design on the project, and tested several personal monitor systems before selecting ME.

van Koolwijk commented: "The decision was an easy one - ME just works like clockwork! There's no hassle, it's easy to set up, and the audio quality is sublime."

An iLive iDR-16 MixRack was employed as a system management hub for the multiple ME mixers, using the Rack's MADI interface to connect to the main monitor mixer. 40 channels of MADI fed the iDR-16 giving access to a full blown iLive DSP system if adjustments were needed to the MADI stream. The iDR-16 was controlled using iLive Editor leaving the ACE connection free to fe

USA - When Ted Greenbaum became theatre manager at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, Ariz., he wasted no time in upgrading the sound reinforcement system in the museum's 300-seat Music Theatre. The intimate venue now sports an all-Meyer Sound loudspeaker and monitor system.

The brainchild of former Target CEO Bob Ulrich, MIM houses more than 15,000 instruments from around 200 countries and territories around the world, many of which were used in folk and tribal settings.

According to Greenbaum, improving the sound system's imaging and coverage was one of his first priorities. A Meyer Sound solution was recommended by Lowell Pickett, MIM Music Theatre's artistic director, who had previously worked with Meyer Sound as a co-owner at Minneapolis's Dakota jazz club.

"The clarity and intelligibility are so much better now," Greenbaum says. "The differe

USA - When planning its new performing arts centre, the Mansfield, Tex., school district faced a dilemma. Though it was determined that both a large auditorium and a smaller performance hall would be ideal for its range of events, their budget could not justify building and maintaining multiple spaces. A solution was soon found in the multi-use Cunningham Performance Hall of the Mansfield ISD Centre for the Performing Arts, which utilizes a Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system to provide the ideal acoustics for its varying room configurations and programs.

While the performance hall holds 5,500 in its open configuration (mainly to accommodate graduations), seating is reduced to 4,200 when moveable walls slide out to form twin 650-seat lecture halls on each side, and reduced further to 1,800 when a thick acoustical curtain closes off the balcony for concerts. However, the 1.

USA - Founded in 1832, St. Augustine's Catholic Church, in Minster, Ohio, built its first building, a log structure, in 1835. The brick church building, built in 1848, has gone through several significant renovations including replacement of the original, single tower with twin Gothic towers in 1874, installation of stained glass windows in 1878 and the addition of seven ceiling murals, painted by Joseph Vittur, in 1866.

St. Augustine's beautiful interior is highly reverberant, which is well suited for its pipe organ and 78-voice choir. However, the church's acoustics have always been a challenge for voice intelligibility, so St. Augustine's worked with Steve Merrill of Stage Right Productions to install a new sound reinforcement system based on Community's Entasys 200 loudspeakers and dSPEC Loudspeaker Processor.

"The old sound system put the sound everywhere," said

Ireland - The church of St. John the Evangelist lies on the southern outskirts of Dublin. Since 1974, the mass has been celebrated there daily along with regular performances by gospel and children's choirs. To improve markedly the level of intelligibility and the acoustic coverage, a new sound system was recently installed in the church.

The greatest challenge for the system designers was posed by the room acoustics, as the reverberation time in the church of St. John the Evangelist had been measured at a full 2.9 seconds. A further stipulation of the commission was that the loudspeakers should blend unobtrusively into the background and complement the architecture of the building. Sound Engineering by Design (SED) of Dublin was the company entrusted with the task of confronting these challenges.

UK - Brewing came to Brick Lane before 1680 with water drawn from wells deep within the London clay. Today, the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane is host to concoctions of a different kind as it hosts the annual ABTT trade show 2013 on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 June. Nestled amongst the array of exhibitors and their paraphernalia visitors will discover the calm and tranquillity of the d&b audiotechnik stand. No clutter, simple visual eye candy and, perhaps surprisingly, no sound.

So what is the special ingredient in the d&b cauldron this year? To calm the stormy seas of a constantly variable acoustic environment comes the ArrayCalc V7, a sophisticated yet easy to use acoustic simulation tool that has been developed for both point source and line array setups as well as those projects that combine both into a single hybrid sound reinforcement system.

Germany - Acoustic measurement is becoming increasingly important as the range and complexity of audio systems becomes ever greater. Learning how to use measurement systems properly is vital to achieve optimum results, which is why German distributor AudioTec delivers high quality seminars on Smaart, one of the most widely used systems. Apex Intelli-X2 48 system controllers play an important role in showing attendees exactly what is happening.

Based in Bergisch Gladbach, on the outskirts of Köln, Rational Acoustics' Michael Häck has been running Smaart classes since 2008, as well as distributing the software.

"Our courses demonstrate that you don't need to necessarily know all the theory, what is behind the algorithms or what is mathematically correct for setting up a high quality PA system. If you can use the software properly to measure the system and interpret the re

USA - The roots of Chicago's Union League Club date back to the Civil War, when an elite group of northerners formed the Union League of America as a defence against radical Confederate sympathizers in the north. The Club, which boasts locations in several major cities, has evolved to become one of Chicago's most prominent social clubs, playing a major role in establishing such cultural institutions as The Art Institute of Chicago, Orchestra Hall, the Field Museum, and the Harold Washington Library Center.

The historic 20-story building sits prominently on Chicago's Loop, somewhat dwarfed by its larger skyscraper siblings but exuding an air of Old World class. Inside, the building's Main Hall plays host to events ranging from formal dinners to addresses by heads of state and other national and international dignitaries. It's an exquisitely appointed room with high ceilings and m
