USA - For the launch of the summer blockbuster film X-Men: Days of Future Past, 20th Century Fox staged its worldwide premiere at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre on midtown Manhattan's west side, NY.

The debut of the $200m-plus film, attended by Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry and other stars, was a huge event filling a hall inside the cavernous Javits Centre and illuminating a 75ft-wide screen hung on the hall's north wall. The showing also had to be able to reproduce the film's bombastic 5.1 surround soundtrack, but the Javits is no cinema; the same huge floor-to-ceiling glass wall that offers spectacular views of the Hudson River and New Jersey can also create uncontrollable aural reflections that would turn the hall into an acoustical nightmare.

Event producer Samantha Sackler Productions tapped NYC-based See Factor Industry, its

Belgium - Set during the First World War, 14-18 - The Musical is a very ambitious musical theatre production. With the 1900-strong audience sat on a moving bleacher within a vast set, an innovative audio design was key to its success. A DiGiCo SD5 digital mixing console was the logical choice for co sound designer Guido Olischlager.

Set in Mechelen's vast Nekkerhal, an hour west of Brussels, the show is produced by entertainment company Studio 100 and features a set the size of two football pitches. The mobile bleacher moves the audience up to 150m within the set, so a complex audio system was needed to ensure fidelity of sound throughout the show. This required a versatile mixing console that had large i/o capacity.

"We chose DiGiCo because it's one of the favourite brands of all three audio guys involved - myself, Marc Luckx (sound designer) and Thomas van Hoepen

Canada - The Mayfield Dinner Theatre is one of the leading live entertainment venues in Edmonton, Alberta, producing five new comedies, dramas and musicals every season, six days a week. The sound for a theatre with that much variety has to be exceptional and versatile, so last summer Edmonton-based AV integrator Production World teamed with Bose Professional Systems to install a new sound system and ensure that there was even coverage to all tables and seats.

The new system consists of Bose RoomMatch Progressive Directivity Array loudspeakers. Production World installed the system, which consists of three hangs - two outer arrays, each with four symmetrical array modules, and a centre array with two symmetrical array modules and two RMS215 subwoofers, all powered by four Bose PowerMatch PM8500N networked amplifiers. The system provides even, comprehensive coverage of the entire

Germany - For its recent audio upgrade, the Deutsches Theater in Munich, Germany has selected a Meyer Sound Mina line array loudspeaker system due to its impressive power-to-size ratio and sonic performance.

With the Mina loudspeaker's small footprint measuring just more than 51 cm long, the technical staff at the 1,500-seat Deutsches Theater was initially sceptical. "We first thought we would need boxes with at least two eight-inch drivers for such a large house," says Stephan Kirschner, sound engineer for the Deutsches Theater. "But when we heard a Mina system at Jugendstil-Festhalle hall in Landau, we were quickly convinced. You could hear the same level of music everywhere, and the imaging was excellent, which is important in theatre."

The main system comprises left and right arrays of 13 Mina loudspeakers each, with an additional center array of 10 Min

UK - Carlsbro sponsored this month's Bloodstock Open Air 2014, supplying an awesome backline array for the festival's multiple stages. In a backstage artist demo cabin, the company gave the guitar world its first sight - and sound - of a new, ground up design, amp head - the Apex.

Apex is an all-new "feature rich", 100 watt head design, boasting "an astounding sonic palette, outstanding power and grunt, and a unique dark and beautiful lacquered wood finish that distinguishes it from afar". The backstage demo room provided the opportunity for the assembled metal head musos to get hands on with the Apex; seen and heard for the first time outside of the company's UK workshop.

A three-channel all tube head design, all three channels feature independent Gain, Volume, Bass, Middle and Treble, plus Resonance and Sharpness controls. Each channel, additionally, feat

USA - The sound system at Trinity Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida is quite sophisticated for a sanctuary that seats approximately 800 congregants. It delivers left-centre-right imaging to nearly every seat from multiple loudspeaker positions, including six time-delayed left-center-right zones that cover the areas farthest from the pulpit. This system was installed by Pro Sound & Video in 2004 and although the loudspeakers and amplifiers have held up well, the original DSP processing system that performed the complex routing and filtering did not.

Florida-based Pro Sound & Video, Inc. replaced the original processing system with two Symetrix Radius 12x8 Dante network audio DSPs and augmented their sixteen combined outputs with two SymNet xOut 12 audio output expansion boxes. All of the units network seamlessly via Dante and replace all of the old analogue processing, with plenty

Hogmanay Date - Lily Allen is to headline Edinburgh's Hogmanay Concert in the Gardens, organisers have announced. The Londoner will bring in the New Year with a performance in West Princes Street Gardens. It will be Lily's last show of her 2014 world tour and follows her second No 1 album Sheezus. Lily said, "I've always wanted to spend Hogmanay in Scotland so the fact that I get to do it this year but performing onstage in front of a whole load of people up for the best time makes it extra special. I can't wait."

Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh City Council's festivals and events champion, added, "Edinburgh's Hogmanay has long been the envy of cities across the globe and the celebrations to bring in the start 2015 are set to be no exception. Headliner Lily Allen is sure to be a big hit with revellers, and coupled with an absolutely spectacular fireworks display

Ireland - In late June a capacity crowd of 18,000 gathered at Musgrave Park in Cork as the multi-national vocal supergroup performed their 2013 album A Musical Affair: The Greatest Songs Of Broadway Live. Joined for the night by The City of Cork Symphony Orchestra, who also performed a full programme of popular music, the five-hour event featured several well-known Irish acts in support.

Formed in 2004, Il Divo have sold over 26m albums, their global popularity being at least partially attributable to their ability to record in Spanish, English, Italian, French and even Latin. They have collaborated with numerous other major artists, most notably Barbra Streisand with whom they have toured extensively.

Full production (including audio, lighting, video and staging) for the event was provided by Dublin-based EQ Events, a long-term Outline owner who have used their Butterf

UK - Baldwin Boxall has added a new outstation to their popular Omnicare EVC (Emergency Voice Communication) system.

The new Advance disabled refuge remote unit has a stylish stainless steel finish and has impressed all that have seen it. The unit will include the same features as the green version - raised, luminescent text, Braille and induction loop and is expected to be in high demand.

Marketing director Nick Baldwin comments, "The unit has taken a while to develop because we wanted to get the look exactly right. It has been a complex process but we are very pleased with the final result."

In 2001 Baldwin Boxall launched CommuniCare, which was the first disabled refuge system on the market. This was soon followed by two other popular EVC systems ('FireCare' fire telephone system and 'AssureCare' emergency call point system. Before long, an Advance disabled refu

USA - Every year, professional and aspiring classical musicians and technical personnel from around the world head to the mountains of Colorado for an eight-week summer intensive retreat at the Aspen Music Festival and School. As the country's premier classical music program, the festival presents more than 300 performances and music education events, including the Aspen Opera Theatre Centre (AOTC) programme at the historic Wheeler Opera House, where DPA Microphones had its chance to shine.

The AOTC relied on the d:dicate 4006C Omnidirectional, 4011A Cardioid and 4015C Wide Cardioid Microphones, as well as the d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphone 10-piece Classic Touring Kit for their pristine recording capabilities. End-user engagement sits at the heart of the team's holistic approach to this area, whereby they are involved with assisting and advising the end-user and integrator from the outset to th

UK - An Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing system recently managed FOH on a tour marking the 40th anniversary of the release of Rick Wakeman's landmark concept album, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth.

Based on the novel by Jules Verne, which also had its 150th anniversary in 2014, the album is one of the rock era's landmark achievements selling 15m copies.

The 14-date tour comprised performances across the UK, including two dates at the Royal Albert Hall. Each show was a live presentation of the album, performed by Rick Wakeman and The New World Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by The English Chamber Choir and the English Rock Ensemble.

Long time FOH engineer, Ian Barfoot, specified an iLive modular system comprising twin iDR10 MixRacks and his preferred iLive-112 surface linked by a fibre optical link, along with a Lenovo tablet running iLive Editor control software

South Korea - This year's Ultra Music Festival (UMF) Korea took place in Seoul, South Korea with more than 100,000 EDM fans and music lovers in attendance. The event, which took place at the Olympic Stadium Sports Complex, featured heart-thumping beats produced by the world's top DJs reinforced by Adamson Energia loudspeakers.

The ground floor of the Olympic arena was converted into the nation's largest outdoor club for the two day event. Electronic music was delivered by a number of big-name DJs including Steve Angelo, Above & Beyond, Steve Aoki and Paul Van Dyk. Empire of the Sun, Infected Mushroom, Far East Movement and M.I.A. were a few of the bands that performed live.

Blue Noise and AMG Korea (Alpha Sound), two prominent South Korean sound companies, provided Adamson sound systems deployed at the Live and Main stages. Sun Kim, technical support manager for Sound Solution

Germany - As in recent years, sound engineer Carsten Kümmel handled classical production duties at the 2014 Thurn & Taxis Classic Festival (Schlossfestspiele) in Regensburg. Among the performances he mixed were Guiseppe Verdi's Rigoletto, Operas in Bavarian and the gala performance of star soprano Angela Gheorghiu and the Symphonic Orchestra from Hof/Germany - all on a Lawo mc²56 console.

The most testing production for Kümmel was Rigoletto, where more than 60 microphones were in use. As previously, he took a two-level approach to the console setup - one level was used for inputs and outputs that did not change during the festival (including feeds to the stage manager, the interval bell and communication with the stage) with a second level dedicated to the various performances. These included, for example, the levels of singers' mics, the band and orchestra.

Belgium - The Benelux countries are rapidly making a name for themselves as a hotbed of musicals produced on a giant scale. As Soldaat van Oranje continues to wow Dutch audiences in a former aircraft hangar, a new production, 14-18, is now doing the same in a similarly vast Belgian venue - De Nekkerhal in Mechelen.

The production brings the grim reality of Flanders fields to life with a high level of intensity and immediacy for the audience, a spectacle helped greatly by Sennheiser's flagship Digital 9000 wireless microphone system.

Set in Western Flanders during the Great War, 14-18 traces the fortunes of three young soldiers caught up in one of the most ruthless and bloody struggles in European history.

This latest production from global entertainment company Studio 100, Frank Van Laecke, Dirk Brossé and Allard Blom takes place in a venue measur

USA - Sound designer Tim O'Heir has chosen a Meyer Sound system built around M'elodie line array loudspeakers to reinforce the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of the musical comedy Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The production entertains audiences with a high energy that Time Out New York says "makes Broadway rock harder than it ever has before".

"The M'elodie centre array is working out perfectly for the vocals," says O'Heir. "It's a rock concert sound, but we also needed great intelligibility along with vocal punch, because the lyrics carry the story line. On both counts, the M'elodies deliver every time."

The main Meyer Sound system is anchored by dual front-hangs of eight-each M2D line array loudspeakers flanking a center hang of 11 M'elodie loudspeakers, while a cardioid array of three flown 600-HP subwoofers provides low end. T

Denmark - Sune Snellman Jakobsen is a live mix engineer stationed in Copenhagen whose credits include world tours with The Raveonettes, Mew, Mercury Rev from NY, Kashmir from Denmark, and, most recently, Trentem°ller.

An avid Metric Halo user, Jakobsen owns a ULN-8 interface and a LIO-8 interface and regularly uses their SpectraFoo sound analysis software to set up shows and to help identify and solve problems while mixing. His interfaces carry Metric Halo's optional +DSP, which allows him to run their powerful plug-ins on critical live channels (including the whole mix!).

"As a FOH engineer, I think it's important to embrace the sonic ideals of the artist," Jakobsen says. "I don't see any point in applying my own favorite flavor if it doesn't appeal to the artist. Along those lines, it's critical to build a relationship of trust so the artist feels I have a

Australia - DPA Microphones' d:facto Vocal Microphone provided significant vocal improvements to the live broadcast of Australia's The Voice, ensuring an even more enjoyable experience for TV viewers. In similar fashion to other TV singing/talent shows, The Voice Australia relied on wireless microphone technology to ensure that contestants could move freely about the stage. DPA's award-winning d:facto fitted the bill for the show's finale.

The decision to try the DPA d:facto Vocal Mics on the show was on suggestion from Australian rental company JPJ Audio. "JPJ's Brad Adamson told me he had DPA d:factos and we were keen to try them on a couple of TV shows we were working on," explains John Simpson, senior audio director of The Voice Australia. "DPA has a great reputation for high-quality mics and this interested me because I hadn't been happy

Germany - In Berlin, they call it the Fanmeile - a 1.5km stretch of avenue which serves as the main theatre for Germany's national celebrations. Where else would more than 1m people gather to celebrate the return of the World Cup, after an astonishing summer of football in Brazil!

Rental company auvisign GmbH was called upon to provide the PA for the huge crowds, from the main stage in front of the Brandenburg Gate to the 10 big TV screens spaced down the length of the fan mile and beyond to other stages. This massive task was supervised by sound designer Johannes Raack, who has worked many times here at Europe's biggest public viewing space.

A Nexo Geo D10 line array system was used on the main stage, together with Geo Sub and CD18 subbass cabinets, and a large number of Nexo PS Series. Elsewhere on the fanmeile, nearly 270 Nexo cabinets were deployed; Geo S12, Geo S8, Nexo A

Integrated Lake Processing provides speaker processing, monitoring and control. The amplifiers were provided by Eighth Day Sound, the production company behind the tour.

"It's great to see the Lab.gruppen amplifiers packaged with the Energia system," explains Jon Lemon, FOH engineer for the tour. "Lab.gruppen amps are absolute workhorses, I never have any concerns when I know they are powering the PA."

The PLM 20000Q (Powered Loudspeaker Management) system seamlessly integrates a four-channel amplifier with the Lake Processing platform, Dante networked signal distri

USA - Growing with the community since its founding in 1972, Hosanna Lutheran Church is now a cornerstone of religious life in Mankato, Minnesota. With four contemporary services a week, plus one traditional service and plenty of high-SPL youth events, its sanctuary sound and video systems were tapped to provide a wide range of content.

Despite having loudspeakers made by a respected manufacturer, intelligibility and low-end extension were poor and a regular source of complaints until recently, when Audio Video Electronics (AVE) (Maple Grove, Minnesota) renovated the system. Citing their excellent fidelity and intelligibility, AVE installed a pair of Danley Sound Labs SH-60 loudspeakers. To give Hosanna Lutheran Church plenty of bass when needed, AVE also gave the church a beefy Danley DBH-218 subwoofer.

"Before AVE's renovation, we always had complaints," said Matt
