UK - 2003 marks the 100th anniversary for West London's Shepherd's Bush Empire - one of the Capital's oldest and most established venues. L&SI reflects on a century of change . . .

Designed and built by Frank Matcham, the venue still retains the original grandeur of its early years. Situated on Shepherd's Bush Green, it opened on 17 August 1903 with its first performers - The Fred Karno Troupe - and continued to provide first-class entertainment with stars of the Music Hall and weekly variety performance and revues, until the 1950s. George Robey 'The Prime Minister of Mirth', Charles Penrose (of 'Laughing Policeman' fame) and George Formby all graced the Empire's stage.

It was sold to the BBC in 1953 and converted into a television theatre with classic shows such as Crackerjack, The Old Grey Whistle Test, That's Life, Hancock and Wogan all transmitted from the venue. (The cloc

UK - Ocean Frontier is a new visitor experience located in the remote and beautiful environs of Fort William in the West Highlands of Scotland. Berkshire-based CGA undertook the lighting, sound and AV installation, working closely with Lightfactor Sales who supplied the LDR lighting fixtures, LightProcessor control, Denon amplifiers and playback machines, and over 70 Apogee Near speakers - the UK's first theme park installation of these enclosures. To this, CGA added Hantarex video monitors, NEC projectors, a DVD player, custom multimedia PCs and a Peavey MediaMatrix system.

The attraction's centrepiece is a 5m deep themed Atlantic reef, contained in a massive seawater tank, and complete with a 10m-long wreck of the 'Kaye Louise' which also provides habitats for indigenous creatures such as conger eels and lobsters.

UK - Live music will once again be played at Alexandra Palace (AP), the North London venue, as it becomes the destination for a live concert by Marilyn Manson on 26 November 2003.

AP is going through something of a renaissance within the music industry at present, and whilst the venue has played host to a wide range of live music events during the last few years, this is the first major touring act to be staged there for almost eight years, heralding a return to form as one of London's leading live music venues. Previous tour acts appearing at the venue included Pink Floyd, Stone Roses and Barry Manilow.

Stuart Galbraith, vice-president of promotions at Clear Channel Entertainment, who is staging the concert, commented: "With the closure of London Arena, and the unsuitability of Wembley, Alexandra Palace now provides the only real alternative in London as a standing venu

Germany - The Kulturpalast Dresden, situated at the Altmarkt in the heart of the town, is the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra's parent company, and hosts music events including important guest conductors and solo artists. The 2,433-seat auditorium is the biggest multi-purpose hall in what was formerly East Germany: it serves as a plenary and concert hall and ballroom, providing a flexible, variable room design.

The auditorium was this month equipped with a new sound system which exclusively features systems from the K.M.E.'s Prestige Series. The twin clusters and single loudspeaker positions for the stalls and the upper rank have been equipped with passive QS 1122 speaker systems. These are operated by K.M.E. amplifiers SPA 1200 MP. K.M.E. developed special installation accessories for the ceiling using a special simulation. The portal area is equipped with active QSA 500 D louds

Ireland - Soundcraft's MH3 multi-function console continues to stake its claim as the 'must-have' desk in the mid-price band. Since its launch at Frankfurt ProLight&Sound in March it has achieved success with sound engineers around the world and become one of Soundcraft's most heavily-specified mixing boards of all time.

One of the latest venues to take on board a 48-channel MH3 is Dublin's hybrid venue, the 700-capacity Temple Bar Music Centre, which doubles between live music and pure dance, and is linked up for recording. Audio Warehouse, Soundcraft's Southern Ireland distributors, supplied the desk. At the hub of the city's arts and music development, Temple Bar Music Centre has been run by proprietor Paddy Dunning since it opened seven years ago.

The venue operates in conjunction with The Sound Training Centre upstairs, which provides job-specific, product-based training

Germany - Bavaria-based company Transtechnik Lichtsysteme has won the contract to equip two studios for the NDR (North German broadcasting company). The completion of the second phase of construction at the Production and Broadcasting Centre marks the end of a long-term plan for the NDR's TV production site in Hamburg-Lokstedt.

The first phase of the operation was completed in 1994 and comprised a 700sq.m production studio, a broadcasting operations centre and the main switching room. This is now to be extended to include two additional TV studios. The project is set to be completed in spring 2005 and will replace the previous studios, located in the oldest part of the complex and dating from 1953.

DAS, a daily evening news magazine, and the Landesfunkhaus Hamburg in Lokstedt are currently using these studios. The new studios are to be equipped with the latest in lighting tech

Americas - Holland America's MS Oosterdam, the second of five planned Vista Class ships, joined her sister ship MS Zuiderdam on the high seas with a maiden voyage on 10 July 2003. UK - Marquee Audio has won a major contract to equip the Wycombe Swan, one of the UK's leading provincial theatres, with a brand new audio infrastructure, based around d&b loudspeakers. The venue - an 11-year-old, 1,076-seat receiving house - is owned by Wycombe District Council and operated under contract by Wycombe Arts Management.

According to the theatre's technical manager, Carlos Quieroz, the audio is the first phase of a complete equipment overhaul, and coincides with the renewal of Wycombe Arts Management's contract for the next 10 years. The total programme of refurbishment - expected to span a three-year period - will end up costing the theatre around £750,000. "Lighting should also be upgraded this year, followed by new flying systems," predicts Quieroz.

The audio is based on a new public address system, control - and a complete overhaul of The Swan's pag

UK - The recent opening of Stella McCartney's London store was one of the most anticipated events in the fashion calendar. The three-storey building in Bruton Street, central London, has been completely refurbished from top to bottom, as befits one of the most fêted designers in the world.

Staffordshire-based sound installation company Ansabac was asked to design and install a sound system that combined punch with precision, "a high-quality audio performer that can be driven loud," explained John Clinton of Ansabac. "Clearly, the big opening party will not be the only event held here."

The retail areas are spread across three floors, and the audio system has been designed to provide four independent zones on each floor. Four Australian Monitor AMIS604P power amplifiers are at the heart of the system, supplied by Fuzion, the UK distributor. These four amps

UK - After three years and £540m, Birmingham's new Bullring retail development has opened. Boasting 150 shops - principally department stores and high street names, plus smaller specialist boutiques and restaurants, the development adds weight to Birmingham's claim that it is fast becoming Europe's new shopping capital. At the centre of the development is the new Selfridges store, designed by architects Future Systems, who reportedly based their designs on a chainmail dress by Paco Rabanne. The curvy new store is covered with over 15,000 spun aluminium discs. With each interior level designed by individual interior designers, the store is as striking inside as it is from the exterior.

Following on from the success of The Gate in Newcastle (see L&SI June 2003), the same creative team came together to deliver the high-tech elements: Immedia Systems looked after the installation a

UK - Lighting and AV and installation company Metropolis AV & FX is the first UK specifier and installer of the new wireless sound systems from Cardio Theatre. The first EU-approved systems have been supplied to several venues, including LA Fitness venues in Leeds, Tunbridge Wells and Purley. The Meadowside Leisure Centre in Whitley - a high profile independent facility - has also benefited from the new wireless system.

The advantages of wireless cardio vascular sound equipment are numerous. Practical considerations such as trailing wires and messy cables are eliminated, and the clarity and quality of the audio is greatly enhanced. Added to which, the systems are highly reliable and low maintenance - all key considerations for an operator.

The wireless system is also easy to install. Metropolis's sales & marketing manager Neil Solanki explains that clients wanting to upgrade t

Sound Division has also put JBL sound systems into some of the capital's hottest celebrity hang-outs, in particular the Philippe Starck-designed Light Bar in St Martin's Lane hotel. A total of 16 JBL Control 25AV monitor speakers have been installed in a distributed system throughout the space. Sound Division's Elliot Patterson commented: "The client needed

Ireland - The Irish town of Naas, located just 15 miles outside of Dublin, has recently become the setting for a modern dance hall revolution with the opening of Time, a night-club with a difference. Times' commercial director and architect, Sean Condon says: "Time is as an attempt to bridge generations, a modern theatre offering high energy entertainment from ballet to high-wire dare devil performances, music from across the world, DJs, live bands and dancers!"

With such a wide a scope, Time called for a rather more complex sound system, one that could function in a variety of situations and that could be controlled at a touch of a button. For this the installation team, AVL, and Time production manager, Mike Warner, chose a complete EAW sound system.

"Sound systems for clubs are usually very easy to absorb because you're dealing with main dance floor sound so

UK - When the world-famous Merce Cunningham Dance Company perform in the Turbine Hall at London's Tate Modern this November, their programme will take place on Harlequin Liberty sprung floor panels - just the same as the dance company use in their own New York studios. As part of the 25th Anniversary of Dance Umbrella - London's annual international festival of contemporary dance - New York's Merce Cunningham Dance Company will also be celebrating their own 50th anniversary, with performances between the 4 and 8 November.

The choice of floor is naturally an important consideration and thanks to MCDC's successful experience with Harlequin in America, Liberty portable panels were the obvious choice for London too. Harlequin's marketing manager Monica Arnott and Simon Byford, technical director for Dance Umbrella, surveyed the Turbine Hall and quickly established the requirements

South Africa - A full lighting rig and ground support front-of-house truss system was supplied by M.J. Lighting to Rapid Blue, for South Africa's first series of The Weakest Link, which was shot at the Gallagher Estate auditorium during August 2003. M.J. Lighting's brief was to recreate the distinct visual feel of the original BBC programme.

The company's Francois van der Merwe oversaw the installation and reprogramming of the show on a dummy rig set up in the M.J. Lighting premises a week before the load-in to the Gallagher studio. A variety of fixtures was used on set, including six High End Systems Studio Colors, 13 High End Studio Spots, 11 Martin MAC 2000s, 11 custom-made Zip Strips, 2k Fresnel units, 5k softlights and eight 1k spots or 'Pups'. ETC Source Fours were used as key lights on each contestant, as well as on the quizmaster, Fiona Coyne. M.J.'s back-up Wholehog 2 w

South Africa - Melrose Arch, nestled in the north-eastern suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa, is pretty much self-contained. You could quite conceivably live and work here without ever having to venture outside its walls.

Like most small towns, it has a town square around which are clustered restaurants and boulevard cafés. And like all self-respecting town squares, a tower presides benignly over the activities. Melrose Arch management wanted to make more of this key feature of the area. Ideally, something was needed that would be noticeable and memorable, but subtle. The solution was programmable automated colour-changing lighting to give the building 'life' and character.

While casting around for a company who could meet their needs, architect Graham Wilson of Osmond Lange, the company responsible for the entire Melrose Arch project, came across Bruce Schwartz and Electr

UK - Artists playing live at Sound Control's new flagship venue - situated in the basement of the Virgin Megastore in London's Oxford Street - will be able to monitor their sound through Nexo floor wedges. At the same time, a Nexo PA system will broadcast top concert performances to audiences congregated at the rear of what is expected to be Europe's first all-encompassing music megastore.

The famous Live Stage in the Oxford Street Virgin Megastore has played host to some of the biggest acts around over the years. In the new exclusive partnership, this will now form a key feature of the Sound Control London experience, with some huge bands planned for gigs each week. If the clarity of sound is anything like that produced for Dido's showcase appearance at the store on 29 September, then they have a treat in store.

Sound Control has a long relationship with Nexo's UK distributor

UK - McKenzie Group recently announced that Steve Forster has been promoted to MKG group operations director. Forster spent three years as general manager of Carling Academy Brixton, before two years as group operations manager, during which he successfully oversaw the opening of Academy venues in Bristol and Glasgow. Forster has been instrumental in the recent growth of McKenzie Group with September launches of two more sites - Carling Academy Liverpool and Carling Academy Islington (London). His appointment as group operations director will ensure the consistency of operations across the Group and maximize the commercial potential and growth for each venue.

Commenting on the appointment, managing director John Northcote said: "Steve has shown both the talent and application necessary to ensure that McKenzie Group's venue stock has a consistent reputation for all that's be

UK - Artists playing live at Sound Control's new flagship venue - situated in the basement of the Virgin Megastore in London's Oxford Street - will have their sound mixed by a fully-featured Soundcraft MH4 multi-function desk. The first use of the new venue was for the launch of Dido's new album Life For Rent at the end of September. Soundcraft UK sales manager (North), James Baker, has long enjoyed a close relationship with the Scottish-based music chain and was quick off the mark when he learned about the ambitious plan to develop the Megastore's famous live stage and incorporate it as a key feature of the Sound Control London experience.

Sensing that some huge bands were lined up to play weekly gigs he immediately proposed installing Sound Control's flagship store with a flagship-mixing console. "I looked closely at the type of desks other bands had been bringing in - so

UK - Style In The City have opened their latest Babushka Bar - on the prime location site of the former Buddha Lounge in Manchester's Printworks. The £500,000 vodka bar development places a high priority on music, therefore installer Tarsin Ltd has once again fitted a Nexo sound system as the core of a technology package masterminded by Peter Dyer.

Dyer's company has enjoyed a long association with Style in the City - and in addition to Babushka, has included other Style brands, such as Bed and Nylon in its work portfolio. The company adopted a Nexo/Crown model as their preferred sound system when they were building the Bed Bar in Smithfield nearly two years ago, they have raised the stakes at Babushka, Manchester - having been asked to upspec the Nexo/Crown system.

"It was obvious they were serious about their sound," remembers Dyer, "and with a growing emphas
