UK - Arbiter Pro Audio has supplied Edinburgh-based SI Sound and Light with JBL 25AV speakers for a new multi-purpose installation at The Traverse Theatre bar. The installation had to be completed in time for kick-off of the 2003 Edinburgh Festival. The globally renowned event unites over 20,000 individual performers in a diverse, month-long celebration of all types of creative and artistic expression.

SI Sound & Light's Neil Silver designed and specified the sound system. The challenge was in making it affordable whilst also covering the Traverse's large bar area. Silver chose 16 JBL Control 25Avs. They are rigged in the shallow mesh roof running right across the top of the bar area and attached to the grid via custom mountings. Silver commented: "Control 25AVs are an ideal sized and sounding speaker for the environment."

UK - Queen Elizabeth School in Kirkby Lonsdale recently approached Maltbury to build a raked stage for the school. QES is a secondary school with specialist Arts Status and, as such, places great emphasis on the quality of its performing arts facilities. Peter Hooper, head of music at the school, gathered a selection of staff from relevant departments who sat down with Maltbury MD Philip Sparkes to discuss all available options. The result of this invaluable meeting was an extremely carefully planned package of equipment, which managed to accommodate a wide spectrum of requirements.

The choice was Metrodeck and the final total was forty 1m x 1m modules, triangles and quadrants. Sets of legs were added to give both flat and raked stages also bolt-on kick-rails and black serge drapes made up a package offering maximum versatility and ease of handling.

UK - The sleepy, south coast backwater of Bosham, seems a strange place to want to set up a new mastering house, but delve a little deeper and it is easy to see why it all makes sound business sense. Cut & Groove is ideally located to mine a rich seam of work, the South Coast Club Scene, the phenomenon that has spawned such mega artists as Artful Dodger, Craig David and Fat Boy Slim.

The duo behind this £200,000 venture is Duncan Davis and Adam Twine who have been immersed in the club scene since their teens. Duncan broke into it at 16 when armed with a couple of cases of albums, he bluffed his way into a DJ residency in Ibiza for the summer with no experience apart from in front of his bedroom mirror, while Adam ran a club on the Isle of Wight.

Though Cut & Groove only opened its doors seven months ago, it is already pretty busy. The facility's offer of a competitively price

Ireland - Following an extensive pitch process, design and communications company Imagination has been appointed as the lead design agency to enhance the award winning Guinness Storehouse, based in Dublin. Imagination was originally the lead design agency that helped produce and launch the Guinness Storehouse back in December 2000. Imagination, who won the pitch against stiff competition from a number of design companies, will start work on the second phase of the design work immediately.

The enhancement involves updating existing areas in the Guinness Storehouse as well as designing several new exhibition and hands-on experiences for visitors. Since opening in 2000, Guinness Storehouse has achieved great success, welcoming over 700,000 visitors annually to the Home of Guinness and becoming Ireland's top visitor attraction. UK - The Lighthouse is the newest waterside bar/restaurant to open in Edinburgh's lively, regenerated Leith docklands area, now a buzzing social hub in the north of the City. Local audio installer SI Sound & Light was asked by the venue's owner, local entrepreneur Robert Orr, to design, specify and install sound throughout. SI's Neil Silver turned to both Arbiter Pro Audio for JBL speakers, and Adlib Audio for their AA enclosures to supply specific equipment to the different areas.

The venue is divided into two totally separate spaces: downstairs is a mezzanine restaurant and different bar areas, and upstairs there's a function room suite available for private hires. Downstairs at the Lighthouse is an open plan design with large windowed frontage onto the street, overlooking the water, with two more secluded rooms with seats and tables at the rear and the restaurant on the mezza

Ireland - Irelands national broadcaster, Radio Telefis Eireann (RTE) has extended its long relationship with Soundcraft broadcast desks.

Standardizing on the RM105 fully-modular on-air console, it recently purchased its tenth, with the upgrade of the mixing facilities in its North Donegal regional studio. Audio Warehouse, Soundcraft's Southern Ireland distributors, supplied the board as a 20-module frame, with three mic and two Telco input modules - and the remainder stereo. In some of the larger regional studios these desks are interfaced with B400 production desks to allow operation in either compere operated or 'support' mode.

"The decision on desk acquisition is made by a user group, consisting of console users and support engineers," explained Cyril Ryan, head of regional facilities, RTE. "The main reason for selection is functionality and reliability, as t

USA - Two Renkus-Heinz Reference Point Array (RPA) loudspeaker systems have been chosen by Stony Brook University, NY, located 50 miles from Manhattan and part of the State University system of New York. A new building houses the two main university ballrooms, multi-purpose rooms that will be used for student orientations, performances of both music and spoken plays, concerts, faculty presentations and presentations to university applicants.

Adwar Video, of Plainview, NY, has designed the system and installation has now been completed. Adwar Video founder Mike Adwar comments: "The university needed to be able to provide each with room with its own sound system, both operable independently of each other, but which could also be linked to feed both rooms with the same signal sources."

The two separate rooms seat a total of some 600 people, and the loudspeaker system wa

UK/Netherlands - Het Muziektheater is one of the most prestigious theatres in the Netherlands and has an international reputation. The theatre offers residencies to the Netherlands Opera and the Dutch National Ballet and is home to the Holland Symphonic. The venue is both a producing and receiving house.

The Muziektheater has four stages, each one 16.2m by 13.5m in size: one principal stage on which the performance takes place, and three assembly stages, where the scenery can be set up or stored, with approximately 60 percent of the scenery pieces hanging in the fly tower.

Het Muziektheater has 102 fly-bars, each 24m long. Renovation of the venue began in 1997 when a mechanically operated flying system was installed. At that time the type of fly-bar used had several disadvantages, for example they were very heavy, they tended to flex laterally, and diagonal bracing could cause

UK - CP Sound has completed a new sound and LED lighting installation at the Terraces Bar & Grill in Brighton for Glendola Leisure. The circular building, on the site of the old Seaworld, was originally erected four years ago as part of the Aquarium Terraces project.

Essex-based Pembroke Design was appointed to create the interiors. As a totally separate element to the sound design of the project, CP's Colin Pattenden decided to show their new side-lit, etched substrate LED panel to the designers, who sought an eye-catching form of bar illumination and were suitably impressed to order 10 to go at the rear of the bars.

The CP Sound LED panels are all etched with an attractive montage of pebbles. Four sit behind the upstairs bar and six at the rear of the downstairs bar. They are made from a special 10mm thick white, clear glass with polished edges to allow the passage of light

UK - 2003 marks the 100th anniversary for West London's Shepherd's Bush Empire - one of the Capital's oldest and most established venues. L&SI reflects on a century of change . . .

Designed and built by Frank Matcham, the venue still retains the original grandeur of its early years. Situated on Shepherd's Bush Green, it opened on 17 August 1903 with its first performers - The Fred Karno Troupe - and continued to provide first-class entertainment with stars of the Music Hall and weekly variety performance and revues, until the 1950s. It was sold to the BBC in 1953 and converted into a television theatre with classic shows such as Crackerjack, The Old Grey Whistle Test, That's Life, Hancock and Wogan all transmitted from the venue. (The cloc

UK - Ocean Frontier is a new visitor experience located in the remote and beautiful environs of Fort William in the West Highlands of Scotland. Berkshire-based CGA undertook the lighting, sound and AV installation, working closely with Lightfactor Sales who supplied the LDR lighting fixtures, LightProcessor control, Denon amplifiers and playback machines, and over 70 Apogee Near speakers - the UK's first theme park installation of these enclosures. To this, CGA added Hantarex video monitors, NEC projectors, a DVD player, custom multimedia PCs and a Peavey MediaMatrix system.

UK - Live music will once again be played at Alexandra Palace (AP), the North London venue, as it becomes the destination for a live concert by Marilyn Manson on 26 November 2003.

AP is going through something of a renaissance within the music industry at present, and whilst the venue has played host to a wide range of live music events during the last few years, this is the first major touring act to be staged there for almost eight years, heralding a return to form as one of London's leading live music venues. Previous tour acts appearing at the venue included Pink Floyd, Stone Roses and Barry Manilow.

Stuart Galbraith, vice-president of promotions at Clear Channel Entertainment, who is staging the concert, commented: "With the closure of London Arena, and the unsuitability of Wembley, Alexandra Palace now provides the only real alternative in London as a standing venu

Ireland - Soundcraft's MH3 multi-function console continues to stake its claim as the 'must-have' desk in the mid-price band. Since its launch at Frankfurt ProLight&Sound in March it has achieved success with sound engineers around the world and become one of Soundcraft's most heavily-specified mixing boards of all time.

One of the latest venues to take on board a 48-channel MH3 is Dublin's hybrid venue, the 700-capacity Temple Bar Music Centre, which doubles between live music and pure dance, and is linked up for recording. Audio Warehouse, Soundcraft's Southern Ireland distributors, supplied the desk. At the hub of the city's arts and music development, Temple Bar Music Centre has been run by proprietor Paddy Dunning since it opened seven years ago.

The venue operates in conjunction with The Sound Training Centre upstairs, which provides job-specific, product-based training

Germany - Bavaria-based company Transtechnik Lichtsysteme has won the contract to equip two studios for the NDR (North German broadcasting company). The completion of the second phase of construction at the Production and Broadcasting Centre marks the end of a long-term plan for the NDR's TV production site in Hamburg-Lokstedt.

The first phase of the operation was completed in 1994 and comprised a 700sq.m production studio, a broadcasting operations centre and the main switching room. This is now to be extended to include two additional TV studios. The project is set to be completed in spring 2005 and will replace the previous studios, located in the oldest part of the complex and dating from 1953.

DAS, a daily evening news magazine, and the Landesfunkhaus Hamburg in Lokstedt are currently using these studios. The new studios are to be equipped with the latest in lighting tech

UK - Marquee Audio has won a major contract to equip the Wycombe Swan, one of the UK's leading provincial theatres, with a brand new audio infrastructure, based around d&b loudspeakers. The venue - an 11-year-old, 1,076-seat receiving house - is owned by Wycombe District Council and operated under contract by Wycombe Arts Management.

According to the theatre's technical manager, Carlos Quieroz, the audio is the first phase of a complete equipment overhaul, and coincides with the renewal of Wycombe Arts Management's contract for the next 10 years. The total programme of refurbishment - expected to span a three-year period - will end up costing the theatre around £750,000. "Lighting should also be upgraded this year, followed by new flying systems," predicts Quieroz.

The audio is based on a new public address system, control - and a complete overhaul of The Swan's pag

UK - The recent opening of Stella McCartney's London store was one of the most anticipated events in the fashion calendar. The three-storey building in Bruton Street, central London, has been completely refurbished from top to bottom, as befits one of the most fêted designers in the world.

Staffordshire-based sound installation company Ansabac was asked to design and install a sound system that combined punch with precision, "a high-quality audio performer that can be driven loud," explained John Clinton of Ansabac. "Clearly, the big opening party will not be the only event held here."

The retail areas are spread across three floors, and the audio system has been designed to provide four independent zones on each floor. Four Australian Monitor AMIS604P power amplifiers are at the heart of the system, supplied by Fuzion, the UK distributor. These four amps

UK - After three years and £540m, Birmingham's new Bullring retail development has opened. Boasting 150 shops - principally department stores and high street names, plus smaller specialist boutiques and restaurants, the development adds weight to Birmingham's claim that it is fast becoming Europe's new shopping capital. At the centre of the development is the new Selfridges store, designed by architects Future Systems, who reportedly based their designs on a chainmail dress by Paco Rabanne. The curvy new store is covered with over 15,000 spun aluminium discs. With each interior level designed by individual interior designers, the store is as striking inside as it is from the exterior.

Following on from the success of The Gate in Newcastle (see L&SI June 2003), the same creative team came together to deliver the high-tech elements: Immedia Systems looked after the installation a

UK - Lighting and AV and installation company Metropolis AV & FX is the first UK specifier and installer of the new wireless sound systems from Cardio Theatre. The first EU-approved systems have been supplied to several venues, including LA Fitness venues in Leeds, Tunbridge Wells and Purley. The Meadowside Leisure Centre in Whitley - a high profile independent facility - has also benefited from the new wireless system.

The advantages of wireless cardio vascular sound equipment are numerous. Practical considerations such as trailing wires and messy cables are eliminated, and the clarity and quality of the audio is greatly enhanced. Added to which, the systems are highly reliable and low maintenance - all key considerations for an operator.

The wireless system is also easy to install. Metropolis's sales & marketing manager Neil Solanki explains that clients wanting to upgrade t

Sound Division has also put JBL sound systems into some of the capital's hottest celebrity hang-outs, in particular the Philippe Starck-designed Light Bar in St Martin's Lane hotel. A total of 16 JBL Control 25AV monitor speakers have been installed in a distributed system throughout the space. Sound Division's Elliot Patterson commented: "The client needed

Ireland - The Irish town of Naas, located just 15 miles outside of Dublin, has recently become the setting for a modern dance hall revolution with the opening of Time, a night-club with a difference. Times' commercial director and architect, Sean Condon says: "Time is as an attempt to bridge generations, a modern theatre offering high energy entertainment from ballet to high-wire dare devil performances, music from across the world, DJs, live bands and dancers!"

With such a wide a scope, Time called for a rather more complex sound system, one that could function in a variety of situations and that could be controlled at a touch of a button. For this the installation team, AVL, and Time production manager, Mike Warner, chose a complete EAW sound system.

"Sound systems for clubs are usually very easy to absorb because you're dealing with main dance floor sound so
