UK - As part of an ongoing drive to improve the services offered to its customers, the FX Group has restructured its technical department, with several key promotions from within the company. The reorganization is also in response to the departure in early September of technical director Frank Oglethorpe, who has relocated to the US.

Adam Pope, who has worked in a technical capacity for FX for almost six years, has been promoted to technical manager. Pope previously worked as an audio engineer in Prague, prior to that spending six years in Soundcraft's R&D department. He will be responsible for the day to day running of the technical and check-in department, liaising with suppliers' and clients' own technical staff and working with clients on special projects which involve FX in both an advisory and rentals role. Pioneering lighting designer Andy Phillips, who was an integral part of the artistic team at the Royal Court Theatre from 1965 - 1972, passed away on September 17 aged 63.

Phillips was famed for his unfussy and uncluttered lighting techniques, believing that if lighting was noticed it was essentially bad lighting. During his time at the Royal Court he was given free reign to experiment with lighting, which ultimately resulted in the famous 'white light' technique where, if colour was used at all it tended to be colour correction reducing the orange cast of tungsten sources. This method aimed to retain the natural skin tone of an actors face and ensure total visual clarity of facial expression. UK - Anthony Newton has succeeded Katharine Williams as technical director of NSDF; The National Student Drama Festival. The Festival, held over the Easter period each year, will be celebrating its fiftieth birthday this March and Anthony welcomes the challenge this unique event will bring.

Anthony, now an Edinburgh based lighting designer, has attended the festival as a member of the technical crew since 1999. He was then at school in Scarborough; his home town and home of the Festival for 16 years now. Aged 21 Anthony is one of the youngest technical directors to date and comes to the position fresh from graduating from Queen Margaret's University College, Edinburgh.

Germany - B & K Braun of Karlsbad has strengthened its export department with the appointment of new recruit Mirjam Sojka, reporting to export manager Ralph Zoller. Sojka's responsibilities include the export activities of German Light Products (GLP). Already around 40% of its production is exported and this share is rising, say the company. UK - John Hickinbotham, known to his associates as 'John Jig', returns to UK-based James Thomas Engineering as client liaison co-ordinator. This is part of the company's current management restructuring, and follows the departure of Mervyn Thomas.

Jig returns to the company after three years working in IT, previous to which he worked at JTE for 20 years. Cox has joined LBI having worked for a rental company as a lighting technician, specialising in automated lights. Before that she worked as the stage manager for the Comedy Store in London. She has a wide range of experience from running - and even performing in - cabaret shows to editing videos.

She now works for LBI as the Technical Administrator, administrating and co-ordinating installations, and various other projects, from conception to completion. UK - Lift-Turn-Move, the newly-launched company fronted by John Jones, has already announced the appointment of an additional team member, as Alan Wood joins the core LTM team of five. As works engineer, Wood will be working alongside his colleagues prepping Lodestars, and further improving LTM's systems for faster and more efficient processing of orders received since the company's inception at PLASA.

Wood first worked with Jones at PCM, which he joined aged 18. He left four years later to work as assistant engineer with industrial lifting and rigging specialist Cosalt, continuing his career in the lifting business. UK - Ed Pagett, the well-known general manager of VLPS Lighting Services which merged with PRG recently, has left the company following an internal reorganization which sees David Keighley of LSD-Fourth Phase take over at the head of the newly-formed PRG Lighting division. It is understood that Pagett left the company in mid-October, although no official statement had been issued by PRG at the time of going to press.

USA - Industry veteran, Eric Mueller, has joined Clay Paky America as regional sales manager for the central and eastern US. Expansion of the program will help ensure that the market is staffed with qualified technicians and will allow authorized Vari*Lite dealers to provide greater product support for end users.
