USA - In the heart of Laguna Beach in Southern California, an 82-year-old Spanish mission style building stands proud as the home of Laguna Presbyterian Church. After a two-year renovation that included the installation of a Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system, the sanctuary now provides acoustical environments that fully support its rich and diverse worship programme.

"We were very unhappy with the sound," says worship elder Lorna Cohen. "It was fine for spoken word but we had all sorts of music that just really wasn't engaging our congregation because of the building's acoustics. We also have this Möller organ with 1,600 pipes and we weren't really able to experience the full range of that because we had a very, very dead space."

Laguna was committed to finding an audio solution that would aurally envelope the congregation and fully support its pra

UK - Production Services Ireland has completed the supply and installation of lighting and sound equipment at the new 400-seater Theatre At the Mill in Newtownabbey, Belfast.

The state-of-the-art building offers a diverse programme of quality performances. It is the newest addition to Newtownabbey Borough Council's HQ, and is located in the Civic Square area at the back of the renovated Mossley Mill, a former 19th century flax mill.

Locally based PSI tendered and won the contract to equip the theatre against stiff competition. PSI also supplied technician Alan Clarke for the full fit up period and the first few weeks of operation, to ensure that all things technical went smoothly.

PSI's Brian Reilly says, "We were delighted to win this contract. Thea

USA - The Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre is a distinctive landmark in the AT&T Performing Arts Centre, set inside a 10-acre urban park of the Dallas Arts District. The 80,300sq.ft building is one of four venues in the complex. What makes it stand out from the others is its design. The performance space inside is entirely modular and can be remodelled and personalised to the specifications of artistic directors.

In traditional theatres, auxiliary support spaces (such as make-up rooms, rehearsal studios, set build, storage and offices) are positioned around a core space of auditoria. The Wyly architecture turns this accepted layout on its head by stacking the theatre vertically so that the back-of-house and front-of-house areas are situated above and below several stories of performance space.

An automated 'superfly tower' services the stage levels, enabling scenery and seating to

Laporte is no stranger to Merging's product line, having been managing director of the company's French distributor Diversity for 15 years. The position with Merging's head office in Switzerland gives him wider responsibilities. "The challenge for me now, using my experience working for a distributor in one territory, is to build on Merging's distributor network around the

Dubai - Despite the reduced attendance (caused by the interruption of international flights) PALME 2010 in Dubai visitors continued to be attracted to the more innovative booths. One of these was Thomsun Trading Est, whose Middle East launch of the new SANE protocol from Optocore formed the centerpiece of their presentation.

Thomsun product specialist Alok Ghurde, was kept busy throughout answering specific and informed questions about Optocore, 'pioneers of optical digital fibre network systems', from the many prospective customers.

"We had a working Optocore network demonstrated on the booth with Audio, DMX and Video transport showcased. We also had the SANE devices on display," he said.

It was a move that paid off, as many of the region's leading consultants and integration companies displayed interest. The same was true on the rental side where most of the lead

UK - Servicing a wide roster of events in the north east of England with audio visual reinforcement, MT Audio were anxious to embrace the new world of LED technology.

According to Mal Turner, who set up the company in 1996 (originally to provide audio support), "Many of the venues we work are low on power and weight bearing provision, and since LED moving heads have come of age we decided to invest."

He looked at several options, but already had a trading relationship with MilTec (UK), distributors for PR Lighting. "We have bought PR fixtures in the past and found them to be reliable. The new XLED 390's fitted the bill price wise - and when we put a unit up against a conventional 575W moving head it knocked spots off it - there was a massive difference in light intensity.

"In addition, the speed of colour change response is exceptional as is the fact that

USA - Opera companies typically build grandiose sets befitting the stature of the pieces they produce. But for Florida Grand Opera's recent production of The Barber of Seville, the creative team did something different by using a huge rear projection screen with 20k projector fed by a Martin Maxedia Broadcast media server.

The backdrop graphics provided subtle enhancements to the production, a series of silhouettes and computer-generated animations that were stylish without distracting from the drama of this early 19th-century work.

"The graphics were beautiful and amazing," stated media server programmer Martin Potoczny of Visivo Visual Design who has worked with the Maxedia system for years.

"We used all custom created content by Lava Studio of Miami who provided a hard drive with all the content segments. I then put the show together with timing and

UK - Adlib Lighting and Sound continue to service international comedy acts with the latest supply of full technical production for US ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. According to Pollstar, Durham was the top-grossing stand-up act in North America for the past two years as well as being the most successful touring comic in the world for 2009.

The sound design and spec was an open brief and Adlib's James Neale was asked to demonstrate his multiplexing abilities by designing and tech'ing the system as well as taking on FOH/monitor engineering duties.

Neale decided on a JBL VerTec PA, primarily because of its ease of use as a combined flown and ground stacked system. He knew that in the City Hall shows, he would have to split the arrays into these two positions to preserve the site lines and ensure that the seats around the sides of the stage had uninterrupted views - and this

UK - SSE Audio Group will provide equipment and crew to many of the UK and Ireland's highest profile festivals this year. But this is the first year the company is going 'all digital' at festival monitor positions, a decision made possible by the acquisition of additional Yamaha PM5D-RH consoles.

The company has recently bought four more PM5D-RHs to add to its Yamaha rental stock, which now comprises ten PM5D-RH, two DSP5D, four M7CL-48, five LS9-32 and three LS9-16.

"Previously we've always had analogue consoles on festival monitors enabling us to cater for the wide variety of engineers who need to use them," says SSE's Alex Penn. "This will be the first year we've switched over to using only digital consoles, but it's a decision we haven't taken lightly, as all our setups need to be instantly accessible for any engineer to walk up to.

Back then Leardi was working as a technician in a recording studio when he bought his first HK Audio sound reinforcement system - one that is still up and running today.

Knowing the reliability of his old system, Pier Francesco Leardi had no qualms about investing more heavily into additional active and passive HK Audio systems once his own company had finally been founded.

The HK ConTour Array system acquired by A Dog on Tour Service consists of four CTA 118 subwoofers and four CTA 208 mid/high units.

Leardi comments, "I have always been very satisfied with the quality of HK Audio products -especially with my good old 1990 sy

Uruguay - On 18 March Guns N' Roses brought their Chinese Democracy tour to the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo. Performing to an enthusiastic crowd estimated at more than 30,000 people, the outdoor concert employed a sophisticated sound reinforcement setup consisting of a large quantity of Aero Series 2 and Aero loudspeaker models from the catalog of D.A.S. Audio.

Three sound service companies united for this undertaking: Leggio Sonido (directed by Jorge Leggio), Ariel Marti's Marti Audio, and Victor Lampariello's Compañía Uruguaya de Sonido. Belgium - Icelandic volcanoes notwithstanding, Innovason's Belgian distributor Amptec celebrated 20 years in business with a major 'open house' event which counted over 600 visitors over three days from 21 April. Visitors were treated to a factory tour and the opportunity to hear bands playing on stage, and then the opportunity to attend several different workshops during the day.

During the evening, guests were rewarded with a party and a concert. At the heart of all these proceedings was an Innovason Eclipse digital console which mixed the bands, recorded them, and then sent out the recordings over an EtherSound network directly to each workshop where participants could make comparative microphone listening tests, or try their own hands at mixing.

Innovason's Matthieu Le Failler managed the network and 'babysat' the various freelance engineers who were mixing the bands. He e
