UK - XL Video's specialist theatre and arts department is supplying Grass Valley Turbo media servers, three Sony broadcast cameras, vision mixing and video integration facilities for Michael Grandage's acclaimed production of Frost Nixon at the Donmar Warehouse.

XL is again collaborating with cinematographer/projection designer Jon Driscoll who created the show's film footage design in conjunction with scenic designer Christopher Oram and LD Neil Austin. It evokes a classic 1970s retro look, based around a large video monitor-wall backdrop - made up from 36 'near antique' Barco 2850 video monitors - hanging behind the two main characters sitting in the TV studio.

From an A/V point of view says XL's Malcolm Mellows, Frost Nixon is "completely different to any other recent stage production because of the aged nature of much of the specified equipment." Th

UK - XL Video supplied projection for public artist Martin Firrell's I Want To Live In A City - an installation work projected along the wall of the steps leading up to the National Gallery as part of the Trafalgar Square Festival 06. It's the first time a contemporary public artwork has been projected onto the building.

Firrell, one of Britain's most prolific public artists, was commissioned by the Mayor Of London's office to produce the work. The project was produced by Firma Arts & Media, under the technical direction of Kamal Ackerie. Ackerie has recently worked with Firrell on a projected installation work at Tate Britain which was a resounding success, and through which Firrell also realised the power and versatility of the medium of projection.

Firrell and Ackerie first scoured the Square for suitable surfaces and discovered the plinth casing the steps leading up

blackbox-av began work in February, with their research and d

UK - After more than two years of careful planning, Harrods has unveiled what is believed to be the largest advertising projection screen in department store retailing - above one of the famous Knightsbridge store's main entrances.

To enable the two Christie S+16K 16,0000 lumen DLP projectors to deliver edge-blended, razor-sharp images onto a vast 4.7 x 3.5 metre portrait canvas, required numerous calculations and a leap of faith on the part of the retailer.

Harrods have long adopted a progressive policy towards digital technology, largely due to the enthusiasm shown by Harrods chairman, Mohamed Al-Fayed himself, and the store's 'Door 5' represented a significant opportunity for them to set a new benchmark for the way retailers communicate to their customers. As a result, trials were successfully conducted by consultants, Wow Factor.

UK - 400 employees of O2 were given a night of entertainment to remember in July when phone manufacturer Motorola staged a spectacular evening at Manchester's New Century Hall, organised by event producers Rodber Thorneycroft. Hosted by popular TV presenter Vernon Kay, guests were invited to take part in two game shows, entitled SLVR of Fortune and Play Your RAZR. One of the UK's brightest new music stars, Paolo Nutini sang four songs from his new album, while magician Paul Zenon and comedian Al Murray added to the entertainment.

The event proved to be technically complex: PSP's 8-way buzzer system was used for the quiz section as well as Flash to create a random name selector for participants. All of the quiz graphics were specifically designed to reflect the Motorola brand. For the sou

Germany - D-MEXX have started to ship Signal Splitters for transmission paths between audio devices, compliant with the MADI standard. The D-MEXX Splitters are passive, optical devices; consequently, they are free of latency and require no external power source. Three different versions are immediately available.

The simplest model splits an incoming audio signal (transmitted over optical fibreglass cable) to two identical outputs. The same can be said for the "Dual"-version (two input signals to four outputs, respectively two outputs for each incoming signal). By connecting one of the outputs of the Dual unit back to its second input, one can achieve a tripling of a single audio signal. The "Triplex"-version splits two incoming audio signals each to three outputs (for a total of 6 outputs). Here, too, could one use an "internal cascade" to effectiv

USA - XL Touring Video is video contractor for the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday 27 September. Ken Ehrlich of Ken Ehrlich Productions brought his production team to XL in early August to work with XL's Bob Magee, Chris Mitchell, Dave Hyslop and Matt Pearson to ascertain what LED technology would be used to create a new look for this year's Awards.

Production designers John Shaffner and Joe Stewart looked at all of XL's current technologies with show producers, Renato 'Ron' Basile and Michael Seligman before deciding on three Barco I6 LED Screens for the award intro graphics and two Barco MiPix Screens that presented the supporting graphics.

John Shaffner says: "The scenic metaphor for television was pixilation. The concept of pixellation was illustrated by the MiPix which gave us 5" on centre format. It takes many pixels to make a big picture just as th

UK - With its broadest agenda in the show's history, the seminar programme at this year's PLASA '06 (September 10-13 at Earls Court One) will offer an insight into technical developments, as well as addressing some of the key issues facing businesses today.

This trend continues throughout the four days, with a range of technical seminars providing the core of the programme: sound system designers and operators of public spaces and transport networks will be interested in Intelligible Intelligibility - how to make PA and VA systems understandable and meet intelligibility standards, whilst those more focused on lighting can attend

Belgium / UK - Belgium-based company Amelia nv will introduce its new and innovative ShowLED Animation System at PLASA 2006. For the fourth year in a row, ShowLED will decorate the rear wall of Earls Court using a huge ShowLED curtain. A new product will be launched like it was performing on a real 'show'.

Designed in response to customer feedback, ShowLED Animation is designed to add some extra dynamism to the traditional starcloth. As in other ShowLED systems, the LEDs are placed randomly, ideal for creating starcloth effects. Features include high output RGB LEDs on thin socket cables, a velcro mounting system, excellent LED dimming curve, fast LED response time and additive colour mixing, says Amelia nv.

Contrary to most existing 'LED to fabric' video applications, ShowLED Animation retains the randomly-positioned LEDs, with a significantly raised density. The LEDs can be
