UK - With only one week to go before the first of this series of Hawthorn@Home events, a 'Pyro Day' on October 13 featuring a demonstration of pyrotechnics by Le Maitre, registrations for the event are doing well, the company reports. "The numbers and quality of the registrations we have already received is encouraging," says Alan Jackson of Hawthorn, "however, we still have capacity at the event to accommodate even more delegates."

Hawthorn regularly organise a series of events, which take place at its base at Old Dalby in Leicestershire. UK - The ABTT is looking to compile a list of the most useful things the British theatre technician might utilise in their working life, from entries submitted by its members and non-members alike.

Any item is eligible and suggestions so far include: the multi-tool; a 17mm box spanner; the hard hat; knee pads; Pilbrow's Stage Lighting Design; a sound pressure level meter; personalised crew room coffee mug; and, a walkie-talkie that works in the nearest pub.

In the UK Dance4Life is looking for support in two areas. They are hoping to secure a PA system for the Dance4Life UK School Tour, which starts on 23 October for four weeks. The Tour will visit 30 schools with the interactive Dance4Life performance, and would be looking to loan the equipment.

UK - Sugarloaf United Methodist Church in Duluth, Georgia recently debuted new audio, projection, and video distribution systems installed by dB Audio & Video in Gainesville, Georgia in its new Community Life Building. Sugarloaf's Minister of Worship Arts, Larry Parker, worked with Ronnie Stanford, systems advisor for dB, to create an AV system thatwould serve the multi-purpose nature of the space.

The Community Life Building is the epicentre, to its 1,600-member congregation serving as the worship space, the gymnasium for church sporting events, as well as the meeting place for fellowship meals. From an AV standpoint, the building was both a technical and creative challenge for dB.

In order to do this, the entire perimeter surface of studio 3 in Milano has been covered with a gigantic screen.

Using 11 Stark projectors, Paolo Buroni has created a full-immersion setting of graphically processed clouds. The goal was to create a floating sensation throughout the studio. This effect was obtained by projecting overlapping images on the background walls as well as on the floor all around Fabio Fazio and his guests.

Media server specialists Green Hippo previewed its latest Hippotizer V3. Fusing the Green Hippo design team's video and lighting backgrounds, the company says it aims to make convergence a reality! Jukebox manufacturer Sound Leisure from Leeds featured their top-of-the range digital Browser machine, which is touch-screen controlled and does video and audio, yielding up to 500 audio and 2,000 video tracks. It can be profiled according to musical genre, and programmed up to 14 days in advance for events, timed messages, promotions, etc. The company still also manufactures old-style mechanical machines too, which are proving very popular for celebrity homes!

YCD showed their latest multimedia and audio, video and digital content integration capabilities in the form of a single PC that can output 26 different channels of digital content including six streams of HD video. Another exciting new product was their SMS Juke Box - the first of its kind in the world - for which they took four confirmed orders on the first day of the show. ,b>Nedit from Germany showed 'Media Face' - a low resolution video surface that's ideal for building facades, billboards, giant advertising hoardings and other large-format applications. It can also be used indoors in sizes of 1,000sq.m and over. Transparency is often an issue, and this screen can be fitted over the glass facades and windows of a building without obliterating the lighting or the view for those still working inside.

Computer DJ were back with their wide range of products for DJs, clubs, pubs, hotels, etc. New at the show was the PCVJ video software which amalgamates video and audio files, and Q-Play - a multi-zoned software for hotel and pubs that sends feeds from a single PC system to up to four destinations or zones. The company also showed its popular 00DJ "all in one" DJ module, containing everything needed to 'plug and play' in one briefcase.

Edirol introduced its V-440HD video mixer, which the company says creates new standards in the market. It's an 8-input console that combines 4 inputs of standard definition video with 4 inputs that can be either high definition video (1080i or 720p) or RGB at any resolution from VGA (640x480) to SXGA (1280x1024) - and then output all of these at the resolution that the user chooses. With other features including keyers and picture-in-picture on SD and HD, plus the ability to split output over multiple units, the V-440HD is a single-box solution that "answers every event manager's needs at a price that nobody thought possible" the company says.

Projected Image Digital offer digital media software and hardware solutions, and also produce video content. They were showcasing several 'household' brands such as Catalyst with the new v4 version of the Media Server, and UK partner Element Labs' 'Versa' LED range, which includes: Versa TUBEs, Versa TILES and Versa PIXELs etc.

The show saw the launch of new training initiatives from PID, and introduced some new faces to the team. PID has been elevated to full Apple reseller status.

Version three of Coolux's media server Pandora's Box now gives double the layers (up to 24) from this already well-endowed system, with remoting and sync'ing implemented. Remote allows simple multi system set-ups: nominate one unit as master and the rest automatically subordinate. Sync'ing in under 10 milliseconds means the ability to sync' frame-to-frame.
