UK - XL Video is the first UK company to purchase the Lightengine Patch 560 - a 75mm pixel-pitch LED display system which can serve as a dynamic, low resolution 'curtain', set or scenic element. XL's system has gone straight out on ITV4's regular live late night World Cuppa chat-show programme, which ran for the duration of the World Cup.

The Lightengine was specified by video and projection specialist Dick Straker of Mesmer (pictured), working with photographer Marcus Tate. Producer Joe Talbot wanted a theatrical mood to the show, and he, Tate and Straker, opted for a large, abstract image, constantly changing on camera. Lightengine seemed an ideal solution, as Straker needed some visual tools to make the set adaptable and changeable - the antithesis of more conventional plasma screen studio looks.

Talbot says: "Every new television show needs its own unique, visual look

UK - Last year, director Peter Sellars presented his Tristan und Isolde at the Opera Bastille in Paris, with specially commissioned contemporary visual art by Bill Viola as the backdrop to Wagner's opera.

This summer the work has been adapted into a museum-scale exhibition showing across two venues - Haunch of Venison Yard and St. Olave's College - and presenting over 10 new works under the title Love/Death: The Tristan Project.

At St. Olave's College these are being shown over four feature areas in two separate halls - ranging from room-sized video projections of image and sound (in the main assembly hall and gallery) to three smaller projection screens an a plasma display.

The highlight is the back-to-back presentation of Fire Woman and Tristan's Ascension in the main hall. Here, the artist displays high-definition projection onto a 19ft x 10.7ft screen using

Australia - The new AV Stream from ARX is a unique Zoner/Mixer, enabling a choice of four audio and associated composite video sources to be routed to each of two zones.

The linear ergonomic flow of the front panel controls, coupled with the visual feedback of level settings and source selection makes using the AV Stream totally intuitive, even for casual staff with no prior experience, says the company.

Up to four stereo audio sources and associated composite video feeds can be connected to the AV Stream, such as: tape/cassette/DVD/CD decks, TV/satellite/video audio, juke box / karaoke systems. Interlocking switches for each source ensure that there is no risk of accidentally selecting two sources for the one zone.

Each switch has an associated status LED for at-a-glance confirmation of which program source is active, and numbered panels above each switch allow labeling of

UK - Having worked on similar events in Leicester over the last eighteen years, Hawthorns secured the opportunity from the Jalaram Charitable Trust, Leicester, to provide the power, sound, video and lighting systems for this year's special festival.

With the visit of the religious leader, Morari Bapu, the organisers changed the festival to a more corporate style format including the erection of an enclosed Arena TFT structure 95 metres long, 50 metres wide and 16 metres in height to the apex, accommodating 8000 people.

In order to power the whole site, two pairs of generators were used, one of which was a one megawatt set, which provided all the power to the catering facilities, lighting, sound and the all important air conditioning, given the recent temperatures.

To illuminate the Arena TFT structure and stage both decoratively and safely, over 250KW of lighting was used.

UK - Currently on a major UK and European tour, the Pet Shop Boys are spicing up their stage presence with cleverly-designed 4m x 4m screen props, and a full complement of PSL's newly-acquired Barco R12+ projectors.

Conceived by the show's designer Es Devlin, the unique screens play an integral part in the PSB production. Stretching and elongating from a relatively small 4sq.m to take up the full width of the stage, the screens can be projected on, or lit from inside using Versa Tubes. They have been constructed in such as way as to allow dancers to perform inside them, on two levels. Mounted on wheels, they can be easily moved into several different configurations, including side on to the audience.

"It's the most staged and theatrical concert I've ever worked on," says PSL's Pod Bluman, comparing it to fringe theatre rather than a rock show. "This is very much

Germany - The citizens of Achern, Offenburg and Freiburg were all treated to the recent World Cup action on Lighthouse R19 19mm LED screens courtesy of Modul-Vision, a new division of German rental companies Cassiopeia and Badensound.

UK - Australian manufacturer Røde has announced the Stereo VideoMic (SVM) which is now available from UK distributor HHB Communications.

Aiming to build on the unprecedented success of Røde's existing shotgun-style VideoMic, the SVM is designed to capture detailed stereo audio.

Based on the company's ultra-low noise microphone technology, the SVM features an X/Y configuration that meets the challenge of professional stereo field recording by imposing a high level of rear noise rejection, whilst retaining the essential ambient sound of the recording environment, says the company.

The SVM attaches to the camera with a standard shoe-fitting, and includes a removable high wind furry windshield and an integral suspension mount, designed to prevent mechanical camera noise bleeding into the captured audio.

The SVM can be used on a stand or a boom pole and features t

UK - Blitz, the UK's leading technical staging specialist, has aided in the return of the British International Motor Show to London by supplying audio-visual displays for General Motors, BMW and Saab.

Blitz has risen to meet the challenges posed by designing and implementing a distinctive AV display for the General Motors stand that works within the constraints of the Excel Exhibition Centre environment. USA - D.J. Willrich Ltd (DJW), the audio visual and multi-media specialists, has produced a virtual viewer for the new Jamestown Archaearium in Virginia. It provides a live view of the Fort site as it is today, however, it also presents the Fort as it would have been in 1607, in scale and in perspective superimposed on the live view to the point that visitors do a double take to make sure the Fort only exists in the virtual view.

DJW were invited by Haley Sharpe Design to help deliver their vision of virtual interpretation at the Archaearium, which is a 5000sqft interpretation centre on the archaeological discoveries at Jamestown Fort, the site of the first British Settlement in Virginia.

Rockdrops Gary Cooper-Burrows said, "After discussions with Joe Sanchez (production manager) and Es Devlin (set designer) as to the requirements and uses of the cube for the forthcoming PSB 2006 tour, there was no choice in my mind as to whom I should use for the engineering and manufacture of the cube. UK - Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd. (DNP) today announces the launch of an NXT-enabled version of its award-winning front projection screen, the Crystal Illusion Screen. It is able to display a bright and crisp picture, even in a well-lit room, and uses NXT's SoundVu technology to deliver sound directly from the images, achieving audio-visual synchronicity.

The Screen first debuted in September of 2005, driven by the major growth of LCD, plasma and rear projection televisions in the large scale display television and home theatre markets. Previous matt type screens were unable to clearly display images in a bright room, resulting in their usage being restricted to business conference settings and home theatres. However, DNP's Crystal Illusion Screen uses liquid crystals to efficiently reflect light from the projector while absorbing all other light, achieving the same level of ima

UK - With more than 28 billion dollars worth of orders written at the show this year, the 45th Farnborough International Airshow has been a runaway success. One of the key participants was the event services company ATC / PSL, the Official AV, IT and audio equipment supplier to the Airshow, and its 35-man crew led by Lauren Steadman and Tony Wall.

Although ATC (Aviation Television & Communication) has provided services to FIA for 18 years, this was the first time it was able to call upon the massive resources of its new parent group PSL. According to ATC director Tony Wall, working together to ensure the success of the world's largest airshow has "cemented the relationship" between ATC, the aerospace event service specialists, and PSL, which acquired the company a year ago.

Such is the scale of ATC / PSL's service at Farnborough International Airshow that the
