Record-Breaking Fringe - The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has broken its own box office records by selling more than 1.8 million tickets. Ticket sales for the Fringe were up by 21% on last year and 9% on its previous best ever year, which was in 2007. Organisers said a drop in international visitors had been offset by a marked increase in UK audiences.

The 63rd Fringe, which ended on Monday night, was the first with new chief executive Kath Mainland at the helm. She said, "Even in tough economic conditions, festivals chime with people in a way few other events manage to. This summer the operation made its boldest statement yet with the opening of the new 3D CineMec XL - the largest 3D screen in Holland - with 20,000W (RMS) of purpose-designed QSC cinema surround sound helping to build the atmosphere.

The auditorium can host over 1,000 visitors and some seats can be lifted to the ceiling to convert the cinema into a multi-purpose hall for concerts, congresses or similar events.

Dutch-based specialists FTT Filmtronics (FTT) based their audio specification around a matched system from QSC Audio, using a total of 44 loudspeakers.

USA - Phil Mercer has been appointed as the new MD of XL Video's Los Angeles office.

After five years on the project management team at XL Video UK, Mercer is looking forward to taking up the new challenges and "Exciting opportunity" of heading up the LA operation.

UK - System integrator Sysco saw its extensive audio-visual interactive work in the new Darwin Centre at London's Natural History Museum unveiled to the world's press this week, ahead of the public opening on 15 September 2009.

The £78 million Darwin Centre, a new extension to the museum, occupies a spectacular eight-storey-high concrete Cocoon suspended within a glass outer box. It allows museum visitors and scientists to share for the first time the excitement of exploring, studying and preserving the natural world.

Sysco is lead AV contractor on the project, on behalf of project managers Cultural Innovations. Cocoon features an array of exhibits in a curved walkway that spirals through several of its floors. The exhibits make full use of state of the art technology to enhance the visitor experience and provide easy access to multiple layers of information.

Polished Performance - Sir David Attenborough brought the 115th BBC Proms season to a close on Saturday night by playing a floor polisher as a musical instrument. Sir David was joined on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London by pianist Stephen Hough on the vacuum cleaner. Comedian Rory Bremner also took part in the performance of Sir Malcolm Arnold's piece A Grand, Grand Overture. The eight-minute work has parts for two other vacuum cleaners, four rifles, an organ a and full orchestra.

For the first time, the Proms finale was screened via satellite to cinemas on every continent of the world. The BBC said the two-month classical music festival had been the most successful yet with a 32% increase in under-16s attending. Proms director Roger Wright said the event had included "outstanding and inspiring music-making".

Malta - E/T/C London's Ross Ashton was asked by the President of Malta, George Abela to create a high power video projection show to run right through the two hour Rockestra concert, a high profile fundraising event for the Malta Community Chest charity.

President Abela is the patron of the charity, the largest on the island, and with an enthusiastic audience of 12,000 packing into the Malta Conference and Convention Centre (MFCC), this was the largest ever indoor event to date on the island.

Ross Ashton has a past history of spectacular work in Malta, and for this they wanted some high impact additional visual production dynamics. Italy - Taking place for the second year in 2009, the Jazz:Re:Found festival is fast becoming an Italian answer to that most famous of jazz festivals held in Montreux, Switzerland. This year Lighthouse Technologies became a technical sponsor of the three day event, providing two LED screens and technical expertise throughout.

Held in the city of Vercelli, near Milan, Jazz:Re:Found is already becoming one of the most important events in Italy's musical calendar and so event management company Casanoego went out of its way to build on the first year's success.

UK - EMF worked closely with the Southbank, Royal Festival Hall and the Shell Centre to provide two nights of projection with multiple large format 7kw slide projectors and 8,000kW Space Cannon Search Lights as part of the launch of the new game, Monopoly City Streets, a collaboration between Hasbro and Google.

EMF transformed the iconic riverside building into the golden 'Monopoly Towers'. The charity Kidscape also benefited from the projection of big outdoor of images which successfully promoted their anti-bullying campaign.

Norway - Arena Larvik opens this month and is the first venue in Europe to permanently install LED displays using the new digiTILE range from digiLED.

In common with most modern sporting venues, LED technology is an essential part of Arena Larvik's plans. The contract was won by displayLED following a comprehensive tender and selection process in the face of fierce competition from other LED manufacturers.

The LED display systems comprise: Two screens, each measuring 23sq.m, using indoor Ti16S - 16mm pitch SMD digiTILE; Two fixed banners systems measuring 20 and 8 linear metres, and a 70 linear metre 16mm pitch portable banner that can be moved to different locations and reformatted into a conventional video screen for indoor and outdoor use. Germany - The IAA Frankfurt car show is the world's most important trade fair for the international automobile industry, taking place this year from 17-27 September, with exhibitors from 30 countries showing their newest and most innovative cars to an international audience. Mallorca - Gerriets has provided three large roller screen systems for the show Come Fly with Me at the Gran Casino Mallorca. The project was realised in close cooperation with Gerriets Germany and Gerriets Great Britain (GBB).

The show, set in 1959 in the city of New York, is a mix of swing music, acrobatics and dancing. It transports the audience back in time to the 'Rat Pack' era. Three large roller projection screen systems are used in the show. At the left and right side of the stage, Gerriets installed two Tube top roller screen systems, each equipped with a 36ft (11m) wide x 26ft (8m) high Opera white front projection surface. Childerhouse joins PSCo from the role of CEO at trade only service company BITS. In his seven years with the company he headed up its sales force, introducing AV products to the company's business and managing large projects for the Royal Mail and BAA with JC Decaux. His previous industry experience also includes working with Fujitsu at the introduction of plasma technology, later implementing the UK's first plasma onsite warranty scheme in the UK.

USA - Following its unveiling and positive industry response at InfoComm 2009, Xantech Corporation is now shipping its new WIC1200 Web Intelligent Controller. The WIC1200 is a stand-alone room controller for networked/web-based control featuring two IR Ports, two Serial Ports, two Contact Closure ports and two Digital I/O ports as well as two Ethernet ports (one with POE) for TCP/IP telnet control with less intrusion into facility IP networks.

Saudi Arabia - The inauguration of the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has taken place in Saudi Arabia. Stage One was invited to join the event's creative team by Simon Ransom, technical director for Filmmaster Events, providing their set building and automation expertise to create a dramatic theatrical experience on a stage over 80m wide.

Stage One was asked to provide six giant tracking front projection screens, each a different shape and size, with the largest 14m high by 10m wide. They also provided two 20m long back wall screens, a further screen that lifted and another that folded down. All of these screens overlapped to form a collectively massive tracking projection surface.

Germany - E/T/C London's Ross Ashton was invited to create a video projection art work on the Germania statue located in the Niederwald Landscape Park, near Rüdesheim am Rhein, Hesse, Germany, as part of the 2009 Rheinpartie Festival of Light.

Ashton's carefully crafted mix of colour and precision lighting transformed the imposing 38m tall monument, built to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire after the Franco Prussian war in 1883, into a symbol of European peace and harmony.

Ashton was first approached at the beginning of the year to contribute a work to the festival by its curator and co-ordinator Helmut M. Bien, who already had Germania in mind as a site. Says Ashton "It was a huge honour to be invited to the Rheinpartie, and even more so to specifically be asked to work on a such a key site with the historic and strategic relevance of Germania.&quo
