Slovakia - Lighting and video content for multiple LED surfaces at the 2010 Miss Universe Slovakia beauty pageant, staged in the SIBAMAC Arena, Bratislava, was controlled by two grandMA full-size consoles, six video stations with the MA VPU software (Video Processing Unit) and six MA NSPs (Network Processing Units). The show - which regularly draws one of the highest annual ratings on Slovakian TV - was broadcast live on national STV1, and featured an enthusiastic audience of 5,000 people.

The show's visuals were designed by Martin Kubanka. He worked closely with lighting and video programmers and operators Michal Schmid and Tomas Lecky, who each used a grandMA full-size console for their respective departments.

Says Kubanka, "I have been using grandMA for at least 10 years on all my shows and I would not even think about using another brand, and especially not now, for s

UK - Infinity M, the latest addition to the Coemar range, is making its début at the Adelphi Theatre in London in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical Love Never Dies.

The opera, which will run until 23 October 2010, continues the story of The Phantom of the Opera of 1986, the highly successful musical that has been performed in over 25 countries and seen by more than 100m people.

To translate the complex story into reality and make it a successful musical, Webber chose prize-winning lighting designer Paule Constable, who called in the lighting supplier White Light.

The Infinity M moving head projectors were chosen first and foremost due to their excellent output in relation to their dimensions: as powerful as 2000W projectors, they have the dimensions of a 250 W projector and consume less than half the energy, due to the optical quality of the components u

Indonesia - RCTI (Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia), one of the biggest TV stations in Indonesia, recently proved that 10 years of hard work is no big deal for a grandMA lighting console. Their two grandMA full-size boards have been in active service over the past 10 years, starting on the show Who wants to be a Millionaire.

"The consoles are still in very good condition and all they have needed is a minor upgrading of the memory and a round of updates to the installed software", reports Jens Poehlker, sales director MA Lighting Asia Pacific. "Since coming here last December, we also wanted to follow up on our promise to provide training."

After the console upgrades, a two day MA training session was jointly organised by MA Lighting, Adi Nugroho (head of lighting at RCTI), Setyo Wibowo (head of technical maintenance at RCTI) and Rocky Jong (PT Monal

USA - This year, Wybron celebrates 30 years at the cutting edge of stage lighting invention and manufacturing, from the current LED technology of the Cygnus line to dichroics and watchdog systems, all the way back to the company's initial offering of scrolling colour changers.

Invented by Wybron CEO Keny Whitright in 1980, the scrolling colour changer sparked a revolution in the way lighting rigs were outfitted, designed and employed. Colormax, the first scroller, paved the way to the subsequent Colorwhiz, to The Scroller, to the Coloram, and then to Wybron's current offerings, the Forerunner, Coloram II and CXI. The advent of scrollers allowed for vastly consolidated rigs, providing a quick and painless way to squeeze many colours out of one fixture.

Jim Lenahan, the longtime LD for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was the very first designer to use the scrolling colour change

UK - Blackburn-based lighting rental company HSL were involved in supplying equipment for the latest UK tour by cult US electronic band, Passion Pit.

HSL's Mike Oates was approached by Passion Pit's lighting designer, New York based Mike Janowitz, with whom they are working on various other projects. Janowitz asked if HSL could put together a good visuals package for the band's UK tour. Says HSL's Mike Oates, "It's very exciting working with cutting edge new artists, so we looked at Mike's design and approached XL Video to supply the video elements required. We also co-ordinated a trucking deal with Fly By Nite for the tour."

The two-week UK tour encompassed a variety of venues including students unions and small to medium theatres and town halls including Rock City, Nottingham, Manchester Academy and The Forum in London. Passion Pit's lighting was looked after on th

Italy - Zelig is and has been one of the most followed variety shows on Italian television for many years. It is a breeding ground for home-grown theatre and cabaret talents.

As in previous seasons, the motorised lights for the 2009-10 shows are provided by Renato Neri's Xenon, and consist almost entirely of Clay Paky lights: Alpha Spot HPE 1200s, Alpha Spot 575s, Alpha Wash 575s, Stage Color 1200s, Stage Profile Pluses, CP Color 400s and Alpha Beam 300 motorized ACL lights. The lighting was designed by the photography director Daniele Savi.

"I have worked a lot with a photographic approach," says Savi. "I have dimmed all the lights so that I can open the TV camera apertures more. This means I have less depth of field, and therefore a blurred background, which results in a double advantage: it concentrates attention on the star on the stage by isolating him/her

UK - New low-watt Citizen LED light engines from Marl enable the creation of replacements for fluorescent strip lights - promising over 25% better efficiency and at least four times longer lifetimes. An array of five of the chips matches the light output of a 1.2W fluorescent tube.

According to Marl, the announcement means LED lighting is now the low energy lighting of choice - a position held by fluorescent technologies for some time. "With the announcement of the latest generation of Citizen devices LED lighting is more efficient and longer lasting than any other lighting technology, and can match the light output of all but the most specialist lights," commented Marl Managing Director Adrian Rawlinson. "It is also more robust than fluorescent, and eliminates the risk of broken glass tubes coated with poisonous phosphorous based chemicals."

UK - London Light is set to exhibit for the first time at this year's ABTT show in London. The London-based hire and sales company aims to raise awareness of the range of services it provides to the theatre and events industry, including lighting design and production services.

As an ETC authorised console dealer, London Light specialises in the supply of the latest lighting control systems, while integrating lighting and video with the use of such products as Hippotizer and LED lighting.

Sam Crook, project manager and director of London Light, explains, "We exhibited at PLASA last year and were impressed with the response we received from visitors to our stand. People increasingly value smaller companies like ours which can provide a personal and flexible service at a competitive price.

"We have a number of ongoing contracts with small theatres and non-professiona

UK - Servicing a wide roster of events in the north east of England with audio visual reinforcement, MT Audio were anxious to embrace the new world of LED technology.

According to Mal Turner, who set up the company in 1996 (originally to provide audio support), "Many of the venues we work are low on power and weight bearing provision, and since LED moving heads have come of age we decided to invest."

He looked at several options, but already had a trading relationship with MilTec (UK), distributors for PR Lighting. "We have bought PR fixtures in the past and found them to be reliable. The new XLED 390's fitted the bill price wise - and when we put a unit up against a conventional 575W moving head it knocked spots off it - there was a massive difference in light intensity.

"In addition, the speed of colour change response is exceptional as is the fact that

USA - Production Resource Group (PRG) provided the lighting system, including its new V676 lighting control console, for the new Broadway musical, The Addams Family. Lighting designer Natasha Katz worked closely with directors and production designers Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch to capture the shadowy light of the spooky mansion that is the setting for the show.

"Charles Addams, in his old cartoons, was very, very aware of light; there are a lot of shadows," says Katz. For her design, she wanted to create the feel of shafts of light coming through the closed blinds of the house. She was pleased to find the set design was moving in the same direction, "When I saw that the whole set is actually shutters, it was definitely a great taking off point for the design of the show."

The high walls of the set created an interesting challenge. "I did

UAE - Robe UAE is a new operation launched by Czech Republic based lighting manufacturer Robe lighting to distribute and market their Robe and Anolis brands across all sectors in the United Arab Emirates.

The new office is in the Makateb Business Centre, Abu Dhabi. "We chose Abu Dhabi because business for events and shows here is very strong and expanding at the moment, and we want to be where the buzz is," says Elie Battah, Robe's Middle East regional sales manager, who will be the main initial point of contact there.

Robe already has a strong presence in the UAE, but with the increasingly complexity of some of its products - like the Digital series - it has become important to have direct manufacturer contact with the clients, and easy access to all the facilities needed to set up training seminars and full technical demonstrations, together with the full back up o

USA - TT electronics OPTEK Technology's LED module strips and flexible LED light strips have been employed by Adirondack Studios in the design and fabrication of the Changing Earth exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA. The exhibit includes a Magma Crawl display - a crawl-through fiberglass tunnel that uses a sequence of programmed lights and heating elements to simulate the flow of lava through the earth.

"With the design of not only the lava display on the inside of the tunnel but the eruption meter on the outside of the lava tunnel as well, it was imperative that we utilized high bright LEDs with a significant degree of controllability," said Jerry Panza, electrics foreman for Adirondack Studios. "OPTEK's LEDs are not only extremely reliable - we ran them for two and a half months non-stop (50K+ hours) and not a single LED dimmed or faile

South Africa - Sisters in Song which ran at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City Casino, had the audience on their feet and dancing in the aisles. This was a powerful performance held from 14 April to 9 May 2010, lit by some 56 Robe fixtures controlled by a grandMA full size.

The lighting design was by JR Roughly from Vedatec who says, "Most people who know me will say, JR did this job," he said. "What I'm doing is not new, it's just that the technology is far superior now and the creative ideas have become easier to execute."

Eight Clay Paky HPE 1200w fixtures were placed on the stage floor which had two stairways on either side and a centre reveal. Robe 700 series Wash and Spot were hung from trussing over the stage as well as from the wings. JR interprets music with colour and uses his console as a palette to paint the stage. Switzerland - From 26 to 28 March, lighting designer Stefan Gfeller illuminated the Kulturm tower of Solothurn, an important Swiss historical symbol, with a lighting installation featuring Coemar LED products.

Built in 1538 as a defence tower, Kulturm has been used over the centuries as a granary, prison and bunker; today it has become a multi-purpose cultural centre able to host theatre events and art exhibitions, and its facilities include a modern club lounge.

The tower, characterised by irregular stonework with all sorts of nooks and crannies, became the focal point for a rather special light show. The light designer installed nine StageLite LEDs at the base of the tower and six StripLite LEDs in the loopholes: with their chromatic effects and the possibility of varying the projection angles, the Coemar products highlighted every curve of the building.
