USA - American DJ has introduced two new strobe lights - the Energy One and Energy DMX. The 200W fixtures are built to be extremely road-worthy, say the company. Both are lightweight - a mere 4.5lb (2kg) - and come with a durable, high-tech plastic case that protects the units from damage during transport, setup and teardown. The difference between the two strobe lights is that the Energy DMX - as indicated by its name - can be operated with a DMX lighting controller.

UK - At the forthcoming PLASA show, Alcons Audio will show a complete new product range and highlights of its current line-up. Seen in prototype form at last year's PLASA show, this year the production model of the LR16 pro-ribbon line-array module will be on the show. The recently-launched LR16B, double-15" NeoDymium driver bandpass supplement, will join the LR16.

The LR14, Alcons' ultra-compact line array module, featuring the patented RBN401 pro-ribbon driver, is designed as either an ultra-compact line array system, or as an under-fill for the LR16. It has a dispersion pattern of 120° x 15°, and its 800W peak power handling offers a similar dynamic response to its bigger brother, the LR16.

UK - Smart Sound Direct reports that Galaxy Audio's replacement Neolite S5N-8 driver is now fitted as standard in the Hot Spot HSVC and HSRG monitors, PA5X140 powered PA system and PMCB Contractor Series speakers. Offering the same power handling capacity (100W RMS @ 8 ohms/200W max) and frequency range (150Hz-18kHz) as its predecessor, this new, lightweight Neodymium 5" driver retains the same clarity, power and reliability, but at a fraction of the previous weight, say the company.

The S5N-8 incorporates the company's patented Super Cool ferrofluid cooling technology to reduce distortion and power compression - and at 13.8oz (0.39kg), it's two thirds lighter than the original.

UK - This year, Australian manufacturer Enttec will be exhibiting for the first time at the PLASA Show. On display will be the company's full range of products in a working situation, including the new Datagate, which is a splitter, merger and Ethernet gateway all in one, and will serve as a cornerstone of modern DMX networks, say the company. The PC-based control software, Enttec Light Factory, will also be demonstrated on stand.

Enttec will also be showing the Open DMX USB Widget, which has already received a strong response from lighting professionals and enthusiasts. A special show pack will include a DMX USB widget, USB cable, gender changer and CD with free 16-channel control software and Enttec swag.

UK - Hebden Sound was originally created by Keith Ming in 1994 from the foundations of Calrec Audio, a name once synonymous with high-end microphone production and a long-standing tradition for producing high quality microphones aimed at the professional audio market.

Calrec had made the decision to concentrate on the development of its mixing console business leaving a gap in the market, which Ming sought to fill. Under a licensing agreement with Calrec he continued to build the microphones as Hebden Sound.

Sadly he passed away in 2000 and the company became available to interested parties and was ultimately taken over by the former head of microphones at Calrec Audio, David Anderson, an acoustic consultant with a wealth of experience and a long standing reputation for his meticulous approach. He decided to further develop Hebden Sound by re-working the package significantly.

Aimed at DJs, clubs, installers and hire companies, the CDX-05 is a single desk-top front-loading CD player suitable for all styles of DJ, say Vestax. Features include a wide pitch range (+/-6, 10, 50 or 100%), BPM-syncable effects, vinyl-emulation filter, sampler with loop facility and three assignable cue points with memory. The unit also has scratch play, with an additional TT-M1 input link socket allowing control of the CD from any turntable.

Italy - Studio Due has announced that its new Photowall projection system is now in full production, offering high quality film-based scenographic projection. Using an 1200W HMI lamp, it reproduces photographs (minimum 10, maximum 90, 6x7 size), exposed on a special film.

There are two available options for film scrolling: by index (feed from image to image with no intermediate position) or in free mode - by moving the corresponding DMX channel. Scrolling is bi-directional and the speed is fully adjustable. The design of the spools, combined with the highly efficient ventilating system, protect the film from heat damage, even during prolonged use, say the company, while shutter and mechanical dimmer are also included. Furthermore, Photowall is designed to automatically adjust the power of the light beam in case of dark images, in order to protect the film from damage.

UK - The introduction of the VL3500 Spot and VL3500Q Spot luminaires by automated lighting pioneer Vari-Lite provides new opportunities for lighting designers requiring 1200W fixtures with automated shutter capabilities, say the company. The VL3500 Spot luminaries, which can be seen at the PLASA Show, match with the VL3000 Spot fixtures to provide a complete 1200W spot package.

The VL3500 Spot fixtures share the same performance standards set by the original Vari*Lite Series 3000 Spot luminaires. The shutter system consists of four shutters on two planes, which allows the blades to be operated independently or in unison on the two planes. This, combined with the opposing chamfers, allows designers a clear, crisp focus on all four blades at once.

New products on show will include the Digital Festoon System, a radical rethink of conventional festoon lighting that allows each lamp along a festoon to be individually dimmed, giving the possibility of creating stunning lighting displays from apparently simple strings of lights.

The Digital Festoon System (DFS) can be programmed using a laptop or can be controlled from a DMX lighting console for integration with a lighting rig. Artist is now linked with Cast Lighting as a Registered WYSIWYG Developer, enabling users to program/visualize lighting plots virtually using their WYSIWYG software. ShowCAD has also linked up with Pathway Connectivity to utilize the Pathport Ethernet DMX distribution system. This powerful system is also ACN-ready, and gives Artist up to 32,000 DMX channel capability.

Automaton is a new product - ShowCAD's long awaited low-cost stand-alone show controller which can be programmed from a computer on or off-site using a web browser, and will then replay the programmed shows without the need of a host computer. As part of their continual product development program the Sunbaba Screens team have developed a new scrim material - "DigiSound", which allows sound to pass through it with almost no signal degradation. This revolutionary fabric can also be printed upon with full colour images.

UK - Following the news from Color Kinetics on its new licensing agreement with Spectrum Manufacturing, A.C. Lighting has given full details of the first in the new Chroma-Q line of high output LED products manufactured under the agreement. The Chroma-Q Color Block DB4, which was previewed in prototype form earlier this year, is a block of four DMX-controlled colour mixing LED lights which, due to its modular design and comprehensive range of fixing options, allows users to create a complete LED system using stock of just one generic fixture type.

UK - 5 Star Cases Limited and AV rental company PSCo will be introducing a revolutionary lifting solution to the AV industry at this year's PLASA show. The companies have worked closely together developing the mobile lifting solution. The screen and lift is housed in a flight case, to lift the 84" plasma screen. PSCo hold the sole rental rights for the screen which remains the largest in the world.

The lift can elevate over 200kg in weight, moving the 84" plasma to over 3m in height at the touch of a button, thus enabling the manoeuvre of the plasma screen into position safely and with minimal manpower. In the past analogue wireless systems have always required a 'compander system' to increase the 'signal to noise' ratio to a usable level, limiting the range of the dynamics. Not so with the DWS 2400 System.

With the digital wireless system, the analogue signal is converted through a high profile 'Delta Sigma 20bit AD-Converter' in the transmitter into digital data. The data packages are then sent to the receiver and converted back into an analogue signal. New products include the ColorWash 575 AT - the latest addition to the Robe Wash range, aimed primarily at theatres, TV studios, medium-sized stage applications. Features include full CMY colour-mixing, variable CTO, colour-wheel with five replaceable colours plus open, combined dimmer/shutter and rotatable beam shaper and indexable 360° with continuous rotation.
